While there are many different types, rashes may basically be divided into two types: infectious or noninfectious.

Noninfectious rashes include eczema, contact dermatitis, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, drug eruptions, rosacea, hives , dry skin , and allergic dermatitis. Many noninfectious rashes are typically treated with corticosteroid creams and/or pills. Even a noncontagious, noninfectious rash can cause discomfort and anxiety.

Infection-associated rashes, such as ringworm , impetigo, Staphylococcus, scabies, herpes, chickenpox, and shingles, are treated by treating the underlying cause. Infectious agents that can cause a rash include viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites.

Determining the specific cause of rash usually requires a description of the skin rash, including its shape, arrangement, distribution, duration, symptoms, and history. All of these factors are important in identifying the correct diagnosis. Accurate information about past treatments, successful and unsuccessful, is very important. Treatments that work may be a clue to the cause of the rash, may mask symptoms, or change the appearance, making a definite diagnosis harder. Sometimes good quality pictures of an earlier stage of the rash may aid diagnosis.

There are some rashes that only appear in association with pregnancy, either during pregnancy or even after the delivery of the baby. Most of these are not serious but can be very irritating.

Nummular Eczema: Triggers Symptoms & Treatment

Nummular eczema is a common type of eczema. It is different than the usual eczema and can be much more difficult to treat.

Those suffering from nummular eczema develop circular-shaped spots on their skin, which become very itchy. Due to its fungal like appearance it can often appear to look like ring worm. The cause of nummular eczema is unknown, however researchers suspect it could be genetic.

Many people, even those who have severe nummular eczema seem to clear up completely and do not appear to have the long-term issues like other forms of eczema.

Signs and symptoms of psoriasis

The most common type of psoriasis is plaque psoriasis. Plaque psoriasis appears as thick, raised, red patches on the skin that are covered with white scales made of old, dead skin cells. These plaques can be itchy and painful. They can also crack and bleed.

Psoriasis can affect any part of the skin, but it usually shows up on the knees, elbows, scalp, and lower back. Other forms of psoriasis can occur on the genitals or in your skin folds, like in your armpits . Psoriasis can also just involve the hands and feet .

Up to 35% of people with psoriasis also have nail changes related to psoriasis. This includes:

• Small pits or holes in the nail

• Yellow or brown nail color

• Thickening of the nail

• Changes to the nail shape

There are several other serious health problems that can be more likely if you have psoriasis. Some of the more common issues include:

Signs and symptoms of eczema

Eczema appears as red, dry patches of skin that are very itchy. Some people with eczema scratch these areas a lot, which can lead to bleeding and thick or leathery skin. Unlike psoriasis, eczema can become infected with bacteria or viruses.

Although eczema can affect any part of the skin, some areas are more common. In infants, eczema usually happens on the cheeks, elbows, and knees. In older children and adults, eczema usually affects the insides of the elbows, behind the knees, and the hands and wrists.

How The Rash Feels

One word: ITCHY. Ringworm may have a more intense itch, while psoriasis is not usually described as being very itchy.

While the skin manifestations are mostly asymptomatic, accompanying symptoms of Lyme disease are common. Early in the disease course, a mild flu-like illness consisting of general malaise, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, arthralgias, myalgias, and photophobia can occur.19 If untreated, the disease can progress over the course of weeks to months, resulting in significant complications such as chronic arthritis, facial nerve palsy, and varying degrees of atrioventricular block.19

Early recognition and accurate diagnosis can prevent progression of disease and subsequent lifelong rheumatologic, neurologic, and cardiac complications. In a case of suspected Lyme disease, cutaneous findings are the most sensitive sign of early infection.18 Tick bites not associated with infection will begin to regress within a few days, while ECM will persist and progress. A detailed travel history, recent bites, or outdoor exposures should raise clinical suspicion. Lab findings may include an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, elevated liver function tests, and mild anemia.18 Serologic evidence of infection is most sensitive between weeks three and six and commonly involves detection of anti-Borrelia antibodies using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay , followed by a Western blot for confirmation.17

What Tests Diagnose Types Of Rashes

There are many useful laboratory and special examinations that can be helpful in the diagnosis of rash, such as

• bacterial culture to check for bacteria on the skin or in a wound
• microscopic examination of a scraping of skin with potassium hydroxide to look for fungus
• blood tests such as antinuclear antibody , to look for lupus, complete blood count , liver function tests to look for rashes related to hepatitis, and thyroid function tests
• blood test for EBV or a rapid plasma reagin or other blood tests for syphilis may be appropriate
• nasal culture using a cotton tip swab to check for Staphylococcus and other bacteria
• Gram stain to identify bacteria types
• Tzanck prep to look for herpes virus under the microscope
• skin biopsy
• patch test to determine contact allergies
• rashes that come and go can sometimes be diagnosed by high-quality digital pictures and
• some blood tests are less useful in diagnosis. This includes blood testing for herpesvirus and Lyme disease. The problem in both cases is that a “positive test” usually means only that the person has had or been exposed to the disease in the past and says nothing about active or current infection

Unfortunately, the skin biopsy results of viral rashes and drug rashes may be similar enough that a definite diagnosis cannot be made. Nor can a biopsy indicate which drug is the cause of a drug rash.

Bacterial Infections

Ringworm: Fungal Infections Of The Skin And Nails

Tinea is a type of fungal infection that resembles some symptoms of psoriasis. Psoriasis can cause the thick fingernails symptomatic of fungal nail infections, and both can cause red, itchy skin rashes. When tinea grows on your skin, it can cause a scaly, red skin rash that clears in the middle, called ringworm . Fungal infections of the skin and nails can be hard to treat. Antifungal medications work, but you may need to take them for a long time.

What Are The Treatment Options

Though the underlying causes are different, treatment is generally similar, Dr. Fernandez says. You should see a dermatologist for any rash that doesnt go away with over-the-counter medicine, he says.

Get A Diagnosis Before Trying Topical Corticosteroids At Home

While topical corticosteroids are effective at treating eczema, they can actually make ringworm worse. Steroids may improve the itching and swelling, but they cannot kill the fungal infection. This may lead to the infection spreading and weakening your skins defenses. Using steroid cream can also cause ringworm to change its appearance.
