Establish A Treatment Routine
People with psoriasis who establish a daily bathing and moisturizing routine will find that doing so not only minimizes scaling, but also helps alleviate itching and keeps psoriasis patches looking as good as possible. According to Doris J. Day, M.D., Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology at New York University Medical Center, this routine should include a 10- to 15-minute soak in warm bath water . The bath can include sloughing off scales with a loofah sponge or washcloth, if necessary.
After bathing, pat skin lightly to dry and then moisturize immediately, Day advises. Patients may want to use heavier creams, ointments, or oils at night and lighter lotions in the morning. Twice-daily moisturizing sessions are optimal.
What Is Scalp Psoriasis
Psoriasis can affect your scalp, and the red, scaly patches it causes can flake off like dandruff does. There are a few differences, though:
- Itâs chronic: Psoriasis is long-lasting while dandruff may come and go.
- Itâs more scaly than flaky. If itâs mild, scalp psoriasis looks like scaly, silvery, or powdery patches that may come off in tiny pieces. More serious outbreaks can be red and painful.
- It may spread. Psoriasis patches can creep past your hairline to your forehead, the back of your neck, or the skin around your ears. You may have psoriasis patches on other parts of your body, too, like your elbows, legs, feet, palms, or back.
- Itâs an autoimmune disease. Psoriasis is caused by your bodyâs immune system: White blood cells that should fight off diseases attack your skin cells instead.
Dermalex Psoriasis Scalp Gel
Half of all people who suffer from psoriasis develop scalp psoriasis . The symptoms can vary from fine scaling to thick, crusted plaques covering the entire scalp.
This condition can extend beyond the hairline onto the forehead, down the neck and around the ears.
It has the same unique triple action:
- Helps normalize skin cell production, tackling the cause of the disease
- Helps restore the skin barrier and creates a protective layer on top of the skin to seal in moisture
- Helps reduce patching, scaling and itching, and stimulates the skins own repair mechanism

How you take care of your hair and scalp can have a big impact on your scalp psoriasis flare-ups. In addition to the treatment plan your doctor recommends, you may want to try some of the following tips at home12:
Skip styling tools when possible: Since heat can further dry out your scalp and exacerbate symptoms, its best to avoid blow-drying, curling, and straightening tools if you can. When brushing your hair, use gentle pressure to avoid further irritation. If you have natural hair and are used to consistent styling that requires heat, talk to your dermatologist or stylist to figure out a plan that reduces the risk of potential flare-ups while maintaining the health of your hair.
Avoid the tight up-do: If you have longer hair and have hair loss, you may also want to avoid pulling it back tightly in a ponytail, since that can pull on the already-fragile scalp and possibly lead to more hair loss. If you must pull your hair back, keep the hair low and loose to prevent excess tugging.
Choose hair products wisely: Using certain hair products, such as hair dyes, can also be irritating to your scalp. Ask your dermatologist for brand recommendations or if there are ways your stylist can dye your hair that might be more gentle on your scalp.

Psoriasis cream is perhaps the major treatment for psoriasis. Psoriasis, being a very recalcitrant skin condition, the treatment principle is to keep control of the symptoms.

Topical psoriasis cream if fails will need escalation to oral immunosuppressant or ultraviolet therapy.
The most common psoriasis cream is steroid cream that reduces inflammation in addition to suppressing the condition. These steroid psoriasis creams varies in potency and may require doctors prescription to obtain. Long term use of steroid cream can cause the skin become thinner, redness, allergic rash.
Young children are usually not advisable to use unless under supervision of doctors. It is also prudent to pay attention to the amount of steroid psoriasis cream to use that is one fingertip of cream for an entire hand, two and a half fingertip of cream for both face and neck.
The psoriasis cream is usually applied twice a day, with some possible local irritation when first starting on this psoriasis treatment. Some doctors will use this in combination with steroid creams to maximize efficacy.

What Causes Psoriasis
The exact cause of psoriasis isn’t known. But experts do know that the body’s immune system, which fights germs and diseases, is involved. Overactive immune system cells make skin cells grow faster than the body can shed them, so they pile up as plaques on the skin.
Some genes have been linked to psoriasis. About 40% of people with psoriasis have a family member who has it.
Anyone can get psoriasis and it may begin at any age. It can’t spread from person to person.
How To Apply Safely
Topical corticosteroid should be applied in a thin layer and massaged into the affected area one to four times per day as directed. The treatment typically lasts until the psoriatic plaques resolve. In some cases, a stronger topical drug will be used to penetrate thickened plaques and switched to a milder form once the major scaling has been reduced.
Some corticosteroids are used on an intermittent basis whenever signs of a flare develop. These will usually be milder Class VI or VII drugs that can be applied when needed. Always check the expiration date and let your healthcare provider know well in advance if you need a refill.
Never apply a topical corticosteroid to skin other than that directed by your dermatologist. This is especially true with respect to the genitals and face.
Unless your healthcare provider tells you otherwise, never apply topical corticosteroids to the eyelids or under the eyes. Topical steroids should never be used internally or applied to cracked, bleeding, or infected skin.

How Can Parents Help
For some children, psoriasis is just a minor inconvenience. For others, it is a difficult medical condition.
To manage symptoms and make outbreaks less likely, your child should:
- Wash hands well and often and stay away from people who are sick to prevent infections.
- Manage stress through exercise, yoga, or meditation.
- Not smoke or drink alcohol.
- Keep a healthy weight. People who are overweight tend to have more severe psoriasis symptoms.
Kids and teens with psoriasis may feel uncomfortable with the way their skin looks. Help your child understand that psoriasis is common and treatments can help.
Whether your child’s psoriasis is mild or severe, learn about the condition together. Offer to help find a therapist or join a support group if that might help. Talk to your doctor or check websites like:

What To Look For When Buying Soap For Psoriasis
- Can Fight Inflammation
When you think of what soap is good for psoriasis, it is something that can defeat the symptoms of this skin disease. When the skin is inflamed, it leads to itchiness. The redness should be lightened by an effective soap for psoriasis.
- Can Eliminate Itchiness
Psoriasis comes with itchiness. You will find it hard to resist the urge to scratch so it can make things worse. It is a symptom that can affect your lifestyle as well. You may feel itchy even at night and you will struggle in getting some sleep. A good soap for psoriasis should relieve you from itchiness so you can have a healthy mind and body.
- Should be Good at Moisturizing and Hydrating
Cold and dry weather gives more hardship to psoriasis sufferers. It makes the skin dry and encourages the development of this skin disease. Itchiness can arise and you need to use moisturizer.
When your skin dries, theres excessive skin cell growth called plaque. The overactive immune system when you have psoriasis makes flaking happen. The tiny pieces of skin may be all over the place. It may cause embarrassment, so a soap for psoriasis with moisturizing or hydration is very important.
Dont Scratch That Itch
Refrain from rubbing or scrubbing your scalp when shampooing, as tempting as it may be to dig into those itchy spots. Scratching induces trauma which in turn induces psoriasis, a process known as Koebnerization, Bagel explains.
If youre finding it hard not to scratch, try applying a dab of hydrocortisone, a mild corticosteroid, to itchy spots, to help decrease itching and inflammation, the NPF says. Start with the least powerful topical steroid that works for you, and use it just three to four times a week.

Best For Hands: Mg217 Medicated Moisturizing Psoriasis Cream
Providing enough hydration to the hands can be a challenge, as they often are depleted of their moisture with hand washing and other tasks throughout the day. MG217 Medicated Salicylic Acid cream is fast-absorbing and doesnt stain, meaning you can get back to your other tasks within minutes of use.
The fragrance-free lotion is non-irritating and uses salicylic acid to target any psoriasis patches. Provitamin B5, avocado oil, shea butter, and aloe then mix in to provide hydrating relief. Customers rave that it’s one of the few lotions that works for them to relieve dry patches.
Now we know shampoo is not technically lotion, but hear us out. Washing the hair removes the natural oils that help keep the scalp moisturized and healthy. This can further irritate any psoriasis patches already forming on the surface.
This is where Neutrogenas T/Gel Therapeutic Shampoo comes in. The product addresses dryness and flakiness on the scalp that can be caused by psoriasis while also keeping the surface hydrated. Included in the formula is coal tar extract, which scientists say works up to four hours after hair washing to help the scalp shed dead skin cells.

Psoriasis is characterized by red, thickened plaques with a silvery scale. The lesions vary in size and degree of inflammation. Psoriasis is categorized as localized or generalized, based on the severity of the disease and its overall impact on the patient’s quality of life and well-being. Patient education about the disease and the treatment options is important. Medical treatment for localized psoriasis begins with a combination of topical corticosteroids and coal tar or calcipotriene. For lesions that are difficult to control with initial therapy, anthralin or tazarotene may be tried. The primary goal of therapy is to maintain control of the lesions. Cure is seldom achieved. If control becomes difficult or if psoriasis is generalized, the patient may benefit from phototherapy, systemic therapy and referral to a physician who specializes in the treatment of psoriasis.
