Topical Treatments For Psoriasis

These are drugs you rub directly on your skin. Along with a good moisturizer, theyâre usually the first thing your doctor will suggest, especially for mild to moderate psoriasis. There are over-the-counter and prescription options.

Topical treatments for psoriasis come as ointments, creams, or foam and include:

Steroid creams. These slow down immune cells in your skin. They can ease swelling and redness. Mild steroid creams are available over the counter. Youâll need a prescription from your doctor for something stronger. Steroids come with side effects and shouldnât be used on sensitive areas like your face or genitals. They can burn or thin the skin. Use them exactly the way your doctor tells you.

Salicylic acid. This can soften and thin scaly skin. But it can also irritate your skin if you leave it on too long. It might weaken your hair follicles and cause temporary hair loss, too. The body can absorb salicylic acid if you put it on large patches of skin.

Calcipotriol . This is a strong form of synthetic vitamin D. Itâs known to control overactive skin cells. Your doctor might pair it with a steroid cream.

Tazorac is available gel or cream and applied one and twice daily. it is ot recommended for those who are pregnant or breast-feeding or intending to become pregnant.

Healing Cuts And Burns

Sudocrem acts as a protective barrier around the skin and prevents infection in the wound by blocking out bacteria, so its perfect for treating minor cuts, scrapes and burns.

Zinc has been recognised as a critical element in the body because of the role it plays in growth and development, bone metabolism, the nervous, immune function and importantly, wound healing. However, theres also a study that now confirms zinc, one of the main properties that makes up Sudocrem, helps to speed up the recovery process for cuts and burns. This means that its not only essential for the wound to heal but extra topical application will also help the site heal faster.

Another element of Sudocrem, benzyl alcohol, also acts as a pain reliever. Its an effective anaesthetic in itself and is used in some surgeries to prolong the effects of other anaesthetics, such as lidocaine.

What Fabrics To Avoid For Eczema Sleepwear And Psoriasis Clothing

Fabrics of man-made fibers such as nylon, polyester, modacrylic fleece and naturally coarse wool fibers irritate the skin and can make eczema and psoriasis rashes incredibly hot and itchy. Similarly, although the anti-bacterial properties of Nano-silver coated or infused fibers would seem ideal for eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis sufferers given their inherent antimicrobial properties, fabrics made from these high tech fibers also tends to be very hot, as the silver minimizes heat loss and reflects energy back to the skin and for some sensitive skin people that suffer from contact dermatitis and metal allergies there can be also an allergic reaction to silver.

Cotton is soft and comfortable next to the skin if you have eczema, psoriasis or dry or sensitive skin but cotton tends to stick to open sores and rashes and will breed bacteria. Cotton is an absorbent fiber and can inadvertently wick away the skins natural moisture levels leaving it unnaturally dry and itchy and also reduce the efficacy of topical moisturizers and medications. And cotton is terrible for wet wrapping therapy a common moderate to severe eczema treatment because it gets soggy, heavy and sags out of shape. Dont be fooled – Organic Cotton only references the type of fertilizer and pesticides used in growing the cotton, not how the organic cotton was processed into yarns and how the constructed fabric was finished with chemicals.

Can Sudocrem Be Used On Newborns

Top 10 Zinc Oxide Spray Eczema, Psoriasis & Rosacea Care ...

Sudocrem can be used on newborns but if youre concerned about their sensitive skin, go for Sudocrem Care & Protect. Its a slightly softer version of the cream that comes in a grey tub and is a light and gentle ointment that protects the skin from the causes of nappy rash by caring for and protecting your babys extra delicate skin.

They also say, Sudocrem Care & Protect is certified as hypoallergenic, however if your baby has sensitive skin its always sensible to ask your pharmacist or GP for advice before you use a new product. You should also take a look at the full list of ingredients in case you recognise something you think your babys skin might react to.

So while classic Sudocrem is fine to use on newborns, Sudocrem Care & Protect might be a safer option for anyone particularly worried about their babys sensitive skin.

The Importance Of Zinc For Skin Health

Zinc is vital for skin repair and maintenance. It inhibits histamine release so it can help to reverse histamine intolerance, along with vitamin B6, copper and vitamin C. During teenage years, rapid development requires zinc and these growth spurts can lead to zinc deficiency, and as the skins oil gland activity is regulated by zinc, acne can result. Zinc deficiency can lead to skin lesions, dry and rough skin and delayed wound healing. Severe zinc deficiency can induce blister-like dermatitis, eczema and hair loss.

Notes:

Do I Need To Use A Special Sunscreen If I Have Psoriasis

You dont necessarily need to use special sunscreen but wearing sun protection is important. Long sleeves and clothing with a UPF protection rating can come in handy.

If you have a flare-up or actively inflamed skin, sunscreen may irritate your skin further. In these instances, it may be best to avoid sun exposure or to wear clothing that protects your skin from the suns rays.

When flare-ups are managed, a sun blocker that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide may be your safest bet. Always use a sunscreen that has at least SPF 30.

If you take a medication for psoriasis, such as methotrexate or acitretin, you may have heightened sensitivity to the sun, increasing your need for protection.

Applying Zinc Oxide Cream

Before you use a cream on your skin, perform a small patch test to make sure you will not have a reaction when using the cream in large quantities. Since many people with eczema have sensitive skin, a patch test can prevent the distress caused by an adverse reaction.

To do a patch test, find an area of unaffected skin and apply a small amount of the product. If there is no reaction to the test site after a few hours, you can try using a the product in an area of eczema.

It is well known that the genital skin may be affected by psoriasis. However, little is known about the prevalence and clinical appearance of genital psoriasis, and genital skin is often neglected in the treatment of psoriatic patients. We performed an extensive systematic literature search for evidence-based data on genital psoriasis with respect to epidemiology, aetiology, clinical and histopathological presentation, diagnosis and treatment. Three bibliographical databases were used as data sources. Fifty-nine articles on genital psoriasis were included. The results show that psoriasis frequently affects the genital skin, but that evidence-based data with respect to the efficacy and safety of treatments for genital psoriasis are extremely limited. An advised treatment paradigm for genital psoriasis, based on the levels of evidence, is: first-line: topical corticosteroids second-line: vitamin D preparations or tar-based treatments. What Is Genital Psoriasis

Diaper Rash Cream For Baby Eczema Genital Medications ...

Psoriasis is a common, long-term scaly skin condition that affects approximately 2% of the population. Genital psoriasis affects the genital skin, which includes the pubic area, vulva or penis, skin folds including natal cleft, and buttocks. It is known as anogenital psoriasis when psoriasis also affects perianal skin. Psoriasis does not affect mucosal surfaces.

Psoriasis is one of the most common diseases affecting anogenital skin. It can be part of more generalisedplaque psoriasis, but it may also be the only affected area in 25% of cases. Rarely, generalised and localisedpustular psoriasis can also affect the genital skin.

Genital skin can also be affected in inverse or flexural psoriasis, psoriasis that mainly affects the skin folds. Genital psoriasis may be associated with considerable discomfort and embarrassment, and may severely impair the quality of life and sexual well-being of those affected.

Does Zinc Oxide Work For Eczema

Zinc is present throughout your body, but especially in your bones, muscles, liver, and skin.

During an eczema flare-up, the body releases histamine, which causes you to feel itchy. You may also see small blisters or flaky, cracked, dry skin. Zinc can help address these weak points created in the skin during a flare-up.

Creams with zinc provide a moisture barrier to help soothe the dry, flaky skin that is common with eczema. Zinc creams can also help fight possible infections because of the mineral’s natural antibacterial properties and ability to promote healing.

Zinc oxide may even help with itching by inhibiting the release of histamine.

Their Commonality With The Cream

So what do both of these diseases of the skin have in common when it comes to zinc oxide cream?

While not a cure for the underlying cause, the aesthetic appearance of both may be improved with topical ointments containing this ingredient. At least temporarily, while you wear them.

Why? Because this mineral is white and that can help minimize the appearance of the underlying redness. Though you should not apply it to open sores.

But best of all, zinc for acne rosacea can kill two birds with one stone. This is because topically applied zinc oxide is one of the best natural sunscreens.

The reason very few use it is because the ingredient is so expensive. Instead, they use things like oxybenzone, which has been suspected as possibly causing cancer and disrupting your hormones.

Since rosacea is likely on your face and you want to minimize premature aging of it from UV rays it makes zinc oxide sunscreen a perfect choice for both men and women.

Especially for the guys though, because it allows them to wear something to cover that red skin, without using makeup. Obviously makeup could cause an embarrassing situation in some social circles. But with sunscreen even a macho man can have a plausible explanation as to why hes wearing it that day.

Or you may want to use something higher-end for the face, that has less white color. We reviewed 72 different natural sunscreens for face and most use zinc oxide, so it will give you a rundown of all the best options.

Food Sources And Supplements

How To Cure Your Eczema – Benefits of Zinc – Eczema Cure Channel

Food sources of zinc, like spinach and pumpkin seeds, are something entirely different and will not be effective at treating eczema, according to the US governments Medline page about the mineral .

Does taking zinc help rosacea?

Medline remains silent on using it for that purpose. On PubMed, there are 2 clinical trials listed of using oral zinc sulfate supplements for rosacea, but not zinc oxide.

The conclusions for the sulfate form were contradictory, as the 2006 study said that it was found to be a good option and was safe, effective and lacking important side-effects. It involved a 100 mg capsule dosage of zinc sulfate, taken 3 times per day .

But then a later 2012 double-blind trial that involved a zinc sulfate supplement said it was not associated with greater improvement in rosacea severity compared with placebo . The dose they used was actually higher too, at 220 mg taken twice daily. By the way, zinc sulfate is not found in food either and its actually an herbicide .

There was a 2012 French paper which discussed another form, zinc gluconate for rosacea, but nothing conclusive .

Going back to using zinc for eczema, there is also very little medical literature out there about that. Most of the talk or reviews you hear are from home remedy enthusiasts, who dont always base their treatments on science.

Zinc oxide is widely used as a broad spectrum physical sunscreen. Its advantage lies in its low cost and an excellent safety profile. It has been used alone and in combination with other physical or chemical sunscreen agents. Recently microfine and nano-sized zinc oxide has become available which provides better cosmetic appeal and photoprotection than traditional zinc oxide preparations. Zinc oxide provides protection against UV-A1 superior to titanium oxide providing better spectrum protection .
