Salt Water Good For Psoriasis

Limit Your Time In The Sun

Bath Salts for Psoriasis

Sunlight is good at clearing up psoriasis scales. Its UVB rays slow overcharged skin cells from multiplying too much.

The catch is, you need to expose your skin slowly for the max effect. Lying out for 15 minutes once a day over a few weeks might lead to some clearing. Sunbathing for hours at a stretch can have the opposite effect.

Whenever you get a sunburn, the lobster-like redness you see is skin damage. Sunburns and other skin injuries irritate your skin, which could trigger new psoriasis flare-ups.

If you plan to spend a day at the beach, sunscreen and sun-protective clothes are beach bag essentials. Pick a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunblock with a high sun protection factor .

Use the Fitzpatrick scale as a guide to which SPF to use, and how long to stay out in the sun. If your skin type is 1 or 2, youre more likely to burn. Youll want to use a 30 SPF or higher sunscreen and sit in the shade most of the time.

Dont be stingy with the screen. Smear a thick layer on all exposed skin 15 minutes before you head out. Reapply it every 2 hours, or whenever you take a dip in the ocean or pool.

Sunscreen is just one element of good sun protection. Also wear a wide-brimmed hat, UV-protective clothes, and sunglasses as extra shields against the sun.

Study Design And Population

Eighteen Danish patients were enrolled in this prospective cohort study. The study size was based on feasibility. The inclusion criteria were referral for DSC. Referral was a shared decision between the treating dermatologist and the patient. The date of enrolment of the first- and last patient was on the 18th of February 2015 and 2nd of September 2015, respectively. All patients referred to climatotherapy for the given enrolment period were given the possibility of being included in this study. The last follow-up visit of the last patient was on the 5th of January 2016. Patients were allowed to use their usual treatments at baseline. No formal exclusion criteria were applied though contraindications for selection for DSC include photo-aggravated systemic diseases or dermatoses, skin malignancies, acute skin infections, non-controlled concomitant diseases, and lack of compliance with instructions regarding sun exposure and bathing.

Soft Water Helps Your Skin And Hair Feel Soft After Bathing But What About Itchy Skin Rashes

As a child, perhaps you remember being down the Shore and your parents telling you that salt water was good for any skin ailments or rashes that you had. The salt water seemed to speed up the healing process and reduce itching and redness.

Since water softeners utilize salt to reduce hardness, what are the chances that bathing with it can improve skin conditions such as atopic eczema, psoriasis and other skin abrasions and rashes?

Theres not a lot of research available to prove its efficacy, however a couple of studies conducted in the U.K. indicated that softened water may show positive results for some children with eczema. One study was conducted in areas of the country that were notorious for hard water. Of the over 350 families who qualified, 29 were given use of a water softener for 12 weeks and then were followed up with on a monthly basis to measure the results. Their answers showed:

  • 91% recorded less itchiness
  • 83% maintained that the water softener reduced the severity of their childs eczema
  • of the 78% regularly applying emollients or steroid cream, 67% were using less.

Perhaps more convincingly, at the end of the study, two-thirds of the families opted to purchase the water softeners. Ask your dermatologist if he or she thinks softer water could help improve your irritation.

Determining The Perfect Hot Tub Temperature

Another thing that historically dries out the skin is hot water. That is why my dermatologist always chastises me to stop taking long, hot showers. But, like with chlorine, there can be some benefit if it isnt too hot. I opt to turn the water down to 99-100 degrees Fahrenheit before I get in.

Usually, hot tubs are set anywhere from 102-105, but the lower temperature is still comfortable without risking too much drying. I also limit myself to 15 to 20 minutes in one sitting. This is just enough time to soften up my scales and gives me the ability to easily remove them after I get out.

For those really thick areas, this helps so I can get any ointments or sprays down to the right levels of my skin.

How Soaking In Epsom Salt Can Soothe Your Psoriasis

Theres nothing like a good soak when youre in the middle of a flare-up especially when Epsom salts are involved. Its like going from the Thing in Fantastic Four to something halfway human.

Ive used them for years, but they came into their own recently when I went on a two week holiday to Perth.

I was drinking a bottle of red a day , eating junk and generally pigging out. Not unreasonably, my psoriasis threw a massive hissy fit and the patches on my elbows and arms flared up bad.

Thats when I turned to Epsom salts I bought some from a local chemist and stayed in the tub that evening until the water turned cold and my skin wrinkled up like an old prune.

But the result was worth it. The next day I had barely any skin crust, and I could actually wear a t-shirt without worrying too much about scaring away Aussies. Heres why Epsom salts are so good for us.

Epsom salt is a hydrated salt made from magnesium, sulphur and oxygen with a couple of water molecules thrown in 7). It gets its name from Epsom, a little town southwest of London that became known for its healing mineral waters way back in the 16th century, when Shakespeare was writing up a storm.

The story goes that, in 1618, a farmer noticed his cows were not too happy with the bitter water on his farm. He investigated further and saw that, despite its taste, it was having a profound affect on their skin and rashes. The news spread faster than a psoriasis outbreak and soon people were swarming from all over England for his miraculous Epsom salt water.

Epsom salts have many medicinal uses. Athletes soak in them to relieve muscle pain, people who havent pooped in yonks use them to loosen things up down there, and, most importantly, people with skin conditions use them to get much-needed relief. Epsom salt has so many uses in fact, it is listed as an Essential Medicine by the WHO.

Some people see improvements in their psoriasis during summer because there is more natural ultraviolet light . Make sure to put sunscreen on all your exposed skin, including your psoriasis plaques, to prevent sunburn, which may make your psoriasis worse. Talk to your dermatologist about sunscreen recommendations for your psoriasis. Look for sunscreen that:

Can Epsom Salt Tackle Heavy Metals

The magnesium and sulfate in Epsom salt can help to tackle one of the causes of eczema, heavy metals. As you know, heavy metal poisoning is common with elements like cadmium, mercury, and lead. And some of the sources of this lead poisoning include old pipes, dental amalgam fillings and even asbestos.

When your immune system notices the presence of heavy metals in your body, it automatically sends your antibodies to go after them. But the shocking thing is that your antibodies can cause itching, rashes as well as skin reaction in the process of performing their duties.

That said, sulfate can help to flush out heavy metals from your system in a unique way. The molecule is usually negatively charged, hence can attract metal ions that have positive charges. It can combine with the free metals and remove them from the body.

Why Does Hot Water Feel Good On Psoriasis

As your immune system overreacts, youll notice those telltale scaly psoriasis lesions likely on your elbows, knees, or scalp that can cause your skin to feel especially sensitive, irritated, and itchy. Soaking in a warm bath or shower can help soothe your skin by hydrating and softening these lesions.

Hay Fever And Sinus Issues

Nasal irrigation, or flushing of the nasal cavity, with salty solutions is used as a complementary therapy by many people suffering from hay fever as well as inflammation and infection of the sinuses.

Ocean swimming and exposure to the salt environment are possibly associated with reduced symptoms of hay fever and sinusitis, as well as other respiratory symptoms.

This is because the saline effect on the lining of sinuses may reduce inflammation, although scientific evidence for this is less robust.

The director of clinical services at the medical charity Allergy UK claims people who live by, and swim in, the sea tend to have healthier respiratory systems.

She says because seawater is cleansing and mimics the bodys own fluids in the lining of the airways, it doesnt irritate them.
