Does Weight Loss Help Psoriasis

What Is Gluten Free

How Does Carb Cycling Help with Weight Loss

With gluten-free diets getting more and more attention these days, you may wonder if going gluten-free would help reduce your psoriasis symptoms.

The jury is still out on eliminating gluten â a complex protein found in wheat, barley and rye. In a small number of cases, eliminating gluten can lead to improvements. However, following a gluten-free diet, which is very restrictive, is a major commitment. Itâs not a step you should take unnecessarily.

You should discuss dietary modifications, such as following a gluten-free diet, with your health care provider prior to making any diet adjustments.

Weight Loss Surgery And Psoriasis

It is well recognized that obesity is a risk factor for the development of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, and precedes the onset of these conditions in many cases. There is also evidence to show that being overweight reduces the therapeutic benefit of many of the medications used in psoriasis. In other words, if you are overweight you are more likely to get psoriasis and the medications used in treatment, will be less effective.

Exactly why there should be such a strong association between psoriasis and obesity is not entirely clear, but both can be regarded as fundamentally inflammatory conditions. Evidence shows that fat cells produce molecules called adipokines and cytokines which drive the underlying inflammatory response and thus make psoriasis and arthritis worse. It follows that the impact of weight loss on psoriasis is of great interest to both doctors and patients alike. Several studies suggest that weight loss can improve the symptoms of psoriasis, probably resulting from improved drug distribution and a reduction in circulating levels of inflammatory molecules .

More than half of patients with psoriasis and 62% of patients with psoriatic arthritis reported that their disease improved. Importantly, patients who had more severe psoriatic disease to begin with experienced more improvement, according to the data. The improvement in arthritic symptoms is almost certainly attributable to reduced weight placing much less stress on inflamed joints.

Don’t Hesitate To Get Help

If you have trouble slimming down, see a doctor who specializes in weight or obesity management. You can ask your primary care doctor or dermatologist for a recommendation. It’s typically best to lose weight slowly over time. So be patient. And stay focused on your health rather than the scale.

“It’s motivating to know that you can do more than just take medicine to improve your psoriasis,” says Lipner.

Your Heart Will Be Healthier

According to a review published in April 2016 in the journal Arthritis Care & Research, people with psoriatic arthritis have a 43 percent higher risk of heart disease than people without the condition. If you have psoriatic arthritis, you have a higher level of inflammatory cells in your blood that can cause inflammation in your blood vessels, which can lead to atherosclerosis a buildup of plaque in artery walls. If this plaque breaks off, it can cause a blood clot, which could then lead to a heart attack or stroke. Lose weight, and you can lower your blood pressure and improve your cholesterol, which boosts heart health. Lowering your weight by about 10 percent over a six-month period can lower your risk for heart disease, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

If you try a gluten-free diet, it can take several months for the inflammation to subside. It is recommended that you remain completely gluten-free for at least three months, being sure to remove all sources of gluten from your diet. After three months, if you are unsure if youâve seen a benefit from eliminating gluten, try adding it back into your diet. Over the next three to four days be sure to make note of increased itching, joint pain, headaches etc. If you donât notice any benefit, you may choose to add gluten back into your diet permanently.

Can Your Diet Affect Psoriasis Symptoms

The causes of psoriasis might feel obscure, so thinking that it might be something in the diet has some appeal, Steven Feldman, M.D., a professor of dermatology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in North Carolina, tells SELF. There is also some scientific evidence that diet can affect inflammation in the body, and psoriasis is an inflammatory condition, so it makes sense to think the diet might have some effect.

But science hasnt solidified a connection yet. While there is some evidence exploring the link, there isnt concrete data to support the theory that a persons diet plays a role in their psoriasis, according to Dr. Feldman, who coauthored a 2019 review of 63 medical articles1 investigating diets for psoriasis.

Unfortunately, because of the way many of these studies have been designed, its really hard to conclude which changes, including diet changes, are responsible for certain outcomes, like worsened or improved symptoms. That doesnt mean its out of the question that certain diet changes can have a beneficial impact on psoriasisit just means that more research that addresses these issues needs to be done so scientists have more solid data to work with.

So far, there are two main diet approaches for people with psoriasis: additive diets and subtractive diets. With an additive diet, youd focus on consuming more of a specific food or nutrient. With a subtractive diet, youd slowly remove certain foods or nutrients.

Extra Weight Can Prevent Medications From Working Effectively

One reason why obese psoriatic arthritis patients may be less likely to achieve remission? Overweight and obese people dont always respond as well to medications used to treat the disease, according to the Arthritis Foundation.

“You have this perfect storm,” says Dr. ODell. “Youre more likely to have problems and to have less response to medication.”

Losing weight may help medications work more effectively for both psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis. In a 2014 study of obese psoriasis patients, researchers found that losing weight helped increase the efficacy of biologic drug treatments.

Scalp psoriasis can really disrupt someone’s life and overall well-being. While you might think it’s solely a condition that affects the skin, in some cases, psoriatic arthritis can occur especially if the psoriasis is left untreated. According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, out of the 8 million people with psoriasis, approximately one-third of them will develop psoriatic arthritis, affecting the joints and the tendons. Having psoriasis doesn’t guarantee a psoriatic arthritis diagnosis, but, unfortunately, the risk is higher. If you’re concerned, visit a rheumatologist to screen for the condition and catch it early if you can.

Its a very interesting observation, says Dr. Adam Mamelak, board certified dermatologist in Austin, Texas. There are actually a number of variables involved here. Dr. Mamelak explains that we must consider that a persons weight may not directly affect their skin disease. But rather, some additional contributing factors. If a person is severely overweight and takes a high blood pressure medication, some of these medications can make their psoriasis worse. Often, when those overweight individuals lose a great deal of weight, they may no longer need medication or can take a reduced amount.

Excess Weight May Worsen Symptoms Of Psoriatic Arthritis

If you’re a psoriasis patient who also has psoriatic arthritis, extra weight can strain your joints, which may aggravate symptoms. Psoriatic arthritis can affect both smaller joints as well as large, weight-bearing ones like your kneesand added pounds can put unnecessary pressure on them, making symptoms worse.

“No matter what type of arthritis you have, weight is particularly bad for weight-bearing joints, the hips and knees in particular,” saysJames R. ODell, MD, chief of rheumatology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Research appears to back this up: In 2014, Canadian researchers found that obese psoriatic arthritis patients were less likely to achieve a state of remission than those with lower BMIs.

The Risk Of Complications

People with psoriasis have an increased risk for metabolic syndrome. This is a collection of factors that increase someones risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes, including:

Being overweight also increases someones risk of these health complications, so the combination could be a double whammy on someones health. Learn more about what metabolic syndrome is here.

Another condition that people with psoriasis need to consider is psoriatic arthritis. This is when the immune system starts to attack the joints in addition to the skin. Extra weight may increase the pressure and strain on your joints, especially the joints in the legs. This may worsen joint pain and increase the risk of joint damage.

A Lighter Load Gives Your Joints A Break

Being heavier puts more strain on your joints and could lead to more joint pain and injury. Doctors have also found that people who have psoriatic arthritis and carry extra weight are more prone to developing osteoarthritis the wear-and-tear joint disease than those without inflammatory arthritis, says Joseph Merola, MD, a dermatologist and rheumatologist, associate professor at Harvard Medical School, and co-director of the Center for Skin and Related Musculoskeletal Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. And every pound lost can make a difference: Losing one pound takes four pounds of pressure off your knees.
