Psoriasis Flare Up On Humira

Infusion Therapy Treatment For Psoriasis

Psoriasis and My first Week on Humira

Psoriasis is a common, chronic skin disease that causes itchy, scaly, red patches to develop throughout the body, often appearing on the scalp, elbows, and knees. Though the cause of psoriasis is not totally understood at present, the immune system and genetics both contribute to its onset. People with psoriasis generally experience flare-ups due to triggers such as stress, skin injury, medications, excessive consumption of alcohol, and infections. While psoriasis can make life very uncomfortable, infusion therapy can disrupt the inflammation cycle of the disease and provide a high degree of relief.

Does Humira Cause Hair Loss Or Weight Gain

In very rare cases, Humira may cause some hair loss.

Unexplained weight loss or weight gain, though, is not directly caused by Humira. However, its active ingredient increases the risk of lymphoma, leukemia, and other cancers, many of which are characterized by loss of appetite and involuntary weight loss. Talk to a doctor immediately if you notice weight loss, decreased appetite, or getting full on a small amount of food while taking Humira.

Possible Causes For Psoriasis Remission

The goal of psoriasis treatment is to reduce the symptoms and hopefully end the flare. If treatments are successful, psoriasis may go into remission.

Even without treatment, psoriasis may disappear. Spontaneous remission, or remission that occurs without treatment, is also possible. In that case, its likely your immune system turned off its attack on your body. This allows the symptoms to fade.

This doesnt mean that you wont ever have another flare. Watch for symptoms of psoriasis so that you can begin treating them if they reappear.

When To Talk To Doc

In general, if this is the first time youre noticing red, flaky lips, give your doc a call. Theyll be able to diagnose whether its a psoriasis rash. Its also important to reach out if your symptoms are getting worse.

If you start to notice symptoms such as pain, swelling, tenderness, stiff muscles and joints, or a noticeable change in the appearance of your nails, says Markowitz, call your doctor.

Never try a new treatment including OTC ones without checking with your doctor either.

Psoriasis Update – Graphic Images | Humira Diaries

Humira is not for everyone with plaque psoriasis. Your doctor may suggest it as a treatment for you if:

  • youre an adult with chronic plaque psoriasis, and
  • your plaque psoriasis is moderate to severe, and
  • youre eligible for or systemic therapy to treat plaque psoriasis, and
  • your plaque psoriasis would benefit more from Humira than it would from other systemic therapies, or
  • you cannot use other systemic therapies

Your doctor can give you more information about phototherapy and other systemic therapies. Theyll guide you on which treatments are likely to work best for you.

Humira works to treat plaque psoriasis by decreasing certain actions in your immune system.

Could It Be Something Else

The short answer: Yes.

Psoriasis on lips is pretty rare. Here are some more common things that can cause a rash on your lips:

  • Eczema. This can also cause redness, drying and scaling of one or both lips. It can also affect the skin inside and around your mouth.
  • Chapped lips. Its common and can cause cracking, but chapped lips will usually get better with simple treatments. Applying lip balm, using a humidifier, and drinking more water should do the trick.
  • Cheilitis. A condition that causes red, dry, scaling, and itchy lips. Theres a few different types of cheilitis but they all involve inflammation and could reoccur even after theyve cleared up.
  • Cold sores. These usually begin with pain or burning first. Then youll see fluid-filled blisters emerge along the lip line.

Here are a few examples of what psoriasis and other causes may look like on lips.

Remember, its always best to see a doctor for a diagnosis. That way youll know what kinds of treatments will work best for you.

Here Are The Main Clues A Psoriatic Arthritis Flare Is Coming And How To Make It Go Away More Quickly

You could fry an egg on it is how one patient with psoriatic arthritis described her skin flare in a 2015 study. Affecting up to one-third of people with the inflammatory skin condition psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis is a double-whammy that has the hallmarks of both psoriasis and inflammatory arthritis . These painful symptoms may increase at certain times, called flares or flare-ups.

Science hasnt come as far in understanding psoriatic arthritis flares as it has with other types of inflammatory arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Flares are one of the toughest things to pin down because theres no real set definition a flare, which could mean different things to different people, says Elaine Husni, MD, MPH, a rheumatologist at Cleveland Clinic. Because of this, it can be hard for patients especially those recently diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis to know when its happening.

The line between an official flare-up and the normal waxing and waning of symptoms is definitely a difficult and confusing determination for many patients to make, says occupational therapist Cheryl Crow, MOT, OTR/L, an adjunct faculty member of the Occupational Therapy Assistant program at Lake Washington Institute of Technology and an American Occupational Therapy Association spokesperson. At the most basic level, a flare-up is a period of acutely worsening symptoms however, for psoriatic arthritis, the symptoms may differ from patient to patient.

Research And Statistics: Who Has Psoriasis

According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, about 7.5 million people in the United States have psoriasis. Most are white, but the skin disease also affects Black, Latino, and Asian Americans as well as Native Americans and Pacific Islanders.

The disease occurs about equally among men and women. According to the National Institutes of Health , it is more common in adults, and you are at a greater risk if someone in your family has it. A study published in September 2016 in the journal PLoS One concluded that interactions between particular genes as well as genetic and environmental factors play an important role in the diseases development.

People with psoriasis generally see their first symptoms between ages 15 and 30, although developing the disease between 50 and 60 years of age is also common.

The biggest factor for determining prognosis is the amount of disease someone has, says Michael P. Heffernan, MD, a dermatologist at the San Luis Dermatology and Laser Clinic in San Luis Obispo, California.

Before Stopping Psoriasis Treatment Talk With Your Dermatologist

My Psoriasis and Humira UPDATE!

Because psoriasis is a lifelong disease, its understandable that you may want to stop treatment at some point. Alwaystalk with your dermatologist before you stop treatment.

Some treatments can be stopped immediately. Others need to be discontinued slowly to prevent psoriasis from worsening .

When psoriasis rebounds, it may become a more serious type of psoriasis. A person who had plaque psoriasis may suddenly have pustular psoriasis or erythrodermic psoriasis.

The best way to prevent a rebound is to talk with your dermatologist. Your dermatologist can tell you whether you can stop the treatment abruptly or slowly. Sometimes, the best approach is to gradually switch to another treatment.

Psoriasis: A Chronic Skin Condition Characterised By Thick Red Patches With Flaky Silvery Scales

I noticed this a couple of days ago on my upper neck/back ...

In Singapore, an estimated 40,000 people suffer from the disease, according to the Psoriasis Association of Singapore. Psoriasis can affect men, women and children at any age, though it has been found to be more common between the ages of 15 to 45.

Psoriasis can be mistaken for dandruff when occurring on the scalp. Besides the scalp, psoriasis can affect any part of the skin, in particular the knees, elbows, hands, feet and lower back. In severe cases, the patches can be accompanied by painful joint swelling as well as joint disfigurement.

Psoriasis patches can range from minor dandruff-like scaling to major eruptions covering large areas of skin, says Associate Professor Pang Shiu Ming, Senior Consultant from the Department of Dermatology at Singapore General Hospital , a member of the SingHealth group.

In its severe form, psoriasis can be incapacitating, significantly affecting the patients quality of life. On rare occasions, very severe psoriasis can be life-threatening.

Toxicity Or Side Effects Develop

Both conventional systemic drugs and biologics can have severe side effects.

Liver toxicity has been associated with long-term use of the conventional drug methotrexate, while kidney toxicity has been associated with long-term use of cyclosporine.

Because of this risk, conventional systemic drugs like methotrexate, oral retinoids, and cyclosporine are typically only given for a short time.

Biologics also have side effects. Because they affect the immune system, they can increase the risk of infections, such as tuberculosis and pneumonia, as well as staph and fungal infections.

If your healthcare provider finds that any of these toxicities or serious side effects occur, youll probably need to change treatments.

What Will Happen If I Stop Treating My Psoriasis

One of three things happens when you stop treatment:

  • You may stay clear and have no psoriasis symptoms .

  • Your psoriasis may return, looking and feeling much like it did before .

  • The psoriasis may return and be worse than before .

  • What happens often depends on the medication you were using when you stopped, how well you manage your psoriasis triggers, and your medical history.

How Does Humira Compare To Enbrel

Humira and Enbrel are very similar drugs. But how people respond to either drug can vary.

Both medications belong to the same class of drugs,* called tumor necrosis factor blockers. Theyre both approved to treat plaque psoriasis, and both are given by subcutaneous injection. Humira is injected every other week. Enbrel is injected once per week.

Humira and Enbrel can cause many of the same side effects. In a clinical study that compared the two drugs, Humira was shown to cause worse injection site side effects than Enbrel. These effects included stinging and burning at the injection site.

However, a newer formulation of Humira may cause injection site reactions less often. Its called Humira Citrate-free. You and your doctor can discuss your treatment options and decide which drug is best for you.

    * A drug class is a group of medications that work in a similar way.

    Employ Some Life Hacks

Crow also advises taking shortcuts that can make living with PsA flares easier. These life hacks can help minimize fatigue or joint pain, she says. If your joints hurt, you can change the stuff you are using in your daily life for example, if your hands hurt, you can use a wide-grip fork while eating. You can also change how you interact with stuff, such as choosing to have grocery delivery rather than exerting the energy required to go to the store and bag all the items yourself.
