Best At Home Light Therapy For Psoriasis

Comparison With Other Studies

New psoriasis treatment uses light therapy, how to get in on the study

To our knowledge, this is the first clinical trial on cost effectiveness of home phototherapy compared with outpatient phototherapy for psoriasis. Also no other economic evaluations comparing home phototherapy with the standard outpatient phototherapy have been published, but there are some papers that touch on the subject. For instance, Yelverton et al37 reported that home phototherapy with ultraviolet B light was cost effective. They, however, compared home ultraviolet B treatment with systemic treatments and with ultraviolet A combined with a psoralen , and did not perform a cost effectiveness analysis but estimated the costs of a 30 year treatment period. Since psoriasis is a chronic disease that is generally treated by a rotation of several different therapies, calculation of the costs of a 30 year treatment period with just one therapy does not make much sense. Their results do, however, hint towards home phototherapy being cost effective for short term treatments. A study by Cameron16 and several other papers38394041 suggest that home ultraviolet B phototherapy is likely to be more cost effective than hospital based phototherapy. A study of de Rie et al, published in 2001,42 confirms the accuracy of the range of the costs we calculated for outpatient ultraviolet B phototherapy.

Light Therapy For Psoriasis: Soothing Skin With Red Light

If youre among the 8 million Americans that are affected by psoriasis , you may be wondering if light therapy actually works for your condition or is just another hyped upyet ineffectivetreatment.

The truth is, theres no one-size-fits-all medication or modality for psoriasis, but red light therapy for psoriasis just might be as close as we can get.

Thats because it works not just to reduce symptoms, but also to improve cellular function, so your skin can fight redness, and become blemish-free naturally.

In a moment, well discuss photo-, and red light therapy in-depth, but first, lets review standard, conventional treatments, so we have an accurate basis for comparison.

Series Offers Flexibility And Power

  • Units can be equipped with four, six, eight, ten or twelve lamps.
  • Four and six lamp models have optional re ective doors. Eight, ten and twelvelamp devices feature doors with lamps that act to double the treatment area.
  • 7 Series can accommodate a variety of lamp types, including Narrow Band UVB, Broad Band UVB and UVA and plug into a standard household electrical outlet.

Broadband Ultraviolet B Light Therapy

Broadband ultraviolet B light therapy is an older form of phototherapy than NB-UVB. The two treatments are similar.

However, BB-UVB lamps and light bulbs emit wavelengths of light between 270 and 390 nm.

As with NB-UVB, your starting dose will depend on your skin type.

According to a small 1981 study, 90 percent of people had clear skin after having sessions three times a week and an average of 23.2 treatments.

One hundred percent of people had clear skin after having sessions five times a week and an average of 27 treatments.

BB-UVB is considered less effective than NB-UVB and is more likely to cause side effects. It should be reserved for instances where NB-UVB isnt a treatment option.

BB-UVB is most effective for plaque psoriasis, although it can also be used for guttate psoriasis.

It can be prescribed as a monotherapy or alongside retinoid acitretin . In combination therapy, the skin clears up faster, and lower doses of UVB can be used.

Large Size Modular Design

Phototherapy safe, effective for psoriasis

The Joovv Solo is a large panel design which is considerably larger than the other red light therapy devices we have discussed. It also therefore has far more lamps , which emit red and near-infrared light. It gives you a high-quality output, meaning that you can save time with shorter treatments, without compromising on the quality that you receive each session. Being a large design means that you can treat a wide area of your body at once, rather than being limited to the small spot size that hand held devices have.

At 5 foot 7 inches tall with a slim frame, and standing at the recommended distance of about 6 inches from the device, the output from the Joovv Solo reached from my face down to my mid thighs and just to the edges of my arms, so it has excellent coverage.

But one of the features of the Joovv that truly sets it apart from other red light therapy systems is the modular design meaning that you can link up several devices for even greater coverage. For example, you could add a second below to lengthen the treatment area, or you could add another to one side if you want wider coverage. When set up correctly, the devices will automatically pair so that they then work from one control panel, and if linked to the app, you have one-touch control over all the devices.

Is Blue Light Therapy Dangerous

  • Protect your eyes with opaque or light-filtering eyewear. You can wear completely opaque eye coverings. If you need to see while targeting the therapy device, you can use light-filtering eye protection. Choose wrap-around light filtering eye protection. For pure blue light therapy , you should wear a short-wavelength filtering lens that cuts off transmission at 500 nanometers or eyewear with a yellow-orange lens.
  • Do not use products that will make your skin more sensitive. Blue light makes your skin more sensitive to retinol, Accutane, and acids. These topicals are likely to irritate the skin and increase redness when their use follows a blue light therapy session. Check with your doctor if your medication or topical treatments will cause adverse effects if mixed with blue light therapy.
  • Stay out of the sun. Your skin will likely be extremely photosensitive after blue light therapy. Prevent sunlight irritation after blue light exposure. Some sunscreens will not sufficiently protect your skin from ultraviolet rays. At a minimum, use a physically blocking sunscreen such as zinc, rather than a chemical sunscreen that only transforms the UV rays. Red light is actually photo-protective. It can prevent sunburn.
  • Do not do blue light therapy while taking photosensitive medications. The side effects of some drugs may include increased light sensitivity, so be sure to discuss medications with your dermatologist, doctor or pharmacist before starting treatment.

Is Red Light Therapy Good For Psoriasis

Since the increased risk of skin damage and cancer is a concern with UVA and UVB phototherapyand because topical, light, or oral therapies dont offer consistent or permanent reliefits worth looking into red light therapy as a promising and effective alternative.

Red light therapy–also called low-level laser light therapy involves exposing the skin to relatively long wavelengths of light which penetrate the skin to about 8-10mm .

In contrast, UVA and UVB light do not penetrate the skin as deeply, due to their shorter wavelengths . The longer wavelengths inherent in red light help it promote healing without the side effects of UVA and UVB. So almost non-existent side effects of light therapy for psoriasis are a big reason why more and more people are turning to red light therapy for skin conditions such as psoriasis, wrinkles, and many more.

Uv Light Therapy For Moderate To Severe Cases

Casey Gallagher, MD, is board-certified in dermatology. He is a clinical professor at the University of Colorado in Denver, and co-founder and practicing dermatologist at the Boulder Valley Center for Dermatology in Colorado.

, also known as UV light therapy, is one of the most effective treatments for psoriasis. It involves exposing the skin to controlled amounts of ultraviolet radiation similar to that from the sun. It is usually prescribed with other treatments when conservative therapies fail to provide relief and is especially useful for moderate to severe psoriasis covering large portions of the body.

Phototherapy is performed in a dermatologist’s office under controlled conditions. Side effects tend to be mild. In addition to psoriasis, phototherapy may also be used to treat eczema, vitiligo, lichen planus, and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.

What Does Red Light Therapy Do

Emily’s talks about Treating her Psoriasis – Clarify Home Phototherapy

Essentially, red light therapy speeds up the process of skin cell reproduction and healing. The red rays penetrate deep into skins layers deeper than any other colors. The deeper absorption of red light enhances the cell functions, so cells can grow faster.

Collagen and elastin, the proteins that make skin supple and soft, are produced more efficiently, thus helping reduce damage and making the skin feel youthful, firm and healthy. Skin cells regenerate faster with red light therapy, and it can be used to treat many skin problems from psoriasis to acne, wrinkles and more. Its a simple, safe treatment with long-lasting results.

How Red Light Therapy Helps Psoriasis

  • Red light stimulates the production of new capillaries, which increases the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the skin.
  • Red light stimulates the lymphatic system, which makes waste removal more efficient and results in healthier skin that is less prone to psoriasis flares.
  • Psoriasis and other autoimmune disorders interfere with collagen production. Collagen is a protein that gives skin a firm, supple, and full appearance. Red light stimulates collagen production which can help soothe the skin and reduce flares.
  • Most notably, red light stimulates the production of adenosine triphosphate from the cells mitochondria. This is the cells energy source. A cell that has more energy has more capabilities to perform its normal functions, as well as regeneration and self-healing. Researchers found that ATP reduces inflammation that can lead to the main symptom of psoriasis: abnormally rapid replication of skin cells.

Psoriasis causes cells to replicate at 10x the normal rate, which outpaces the bodys ability to shed them this results in those unsightly red, scaly, painful and itchy areas.

Since light therapy helps to restore normal cell function, this means that the rate of growth will normalize and youll experience fewer and less intense flares.

All types of phototherapy require several treatments per week for several months , plus ongoing maintenance treatments.

What Size Should I Get

In general, there are two types of UVB therapy units. First up: Hand-held devices. These units are best if you only have a small surface area affected by the disease. If only 2% of your body needs to be treated or its in isolated spots such as your neck, legs, or hands, a hand-held one is great, says Jessica Kaffenberger, M.D., an associate professor of dermatology at Ohio State University in Columbus. However, if youre treating a larger areasay, your back, butt, trunk, arms, and legs, you will need a much larger unit.

Full-body machines are much more practical if the disease covers a lot of your body surface, says Carolyn Baker, P.A., a dermatology physician assistant at Newburgh Dermatology in Newburgh, NY. But these units might require a little rearranging of the furniture. Some are shaped like a booth with three vertical panels that you step inside others are more horizontal and open at the top. Not all of them are quite so unwieldy: A few fold up flat when youre done. Ask your doctor about options.

    How Is Puva Treatment Administered

Phototherapy for Psoriasis: Types, Home Therapy, Cost & More

Like UVB treatment, PUVA is administered in hospital phototherapy or physiotherapy units. As with UVB phototherapy, there are different methods for deciding on a starting dose of UVA and how to increase the dose to a therapeutically effective level. Some centres measure the sensitivity of the individuals skin to PUVA by applying test doses to small areas of skin, in a similar way to the MED test described previously. Because PUVA involves sensitising the skin before UV exposure, the sensitivity testis called the minimal photosensitivity dose test. Other centres may use phototype-based treatment schedules or a table of doses.

Treatment times for bath PUVA are shorter than for tablet PUVA and may range from less than a minute up to 5-8 minutes, depending on the output of the PUVA cabin and the dose scheme used. Tablet PUVA times may extend to15 minutes or more. If any session produces a sunburn reaction, or if any other symptoms are reported, the subsequent doses may be altered.

Bath PUVA phototherapy is usually given twice a week or three times every fortnight, whereas tablet PUVA is usually given twice a week for 15-25 treatment sessions or until the psoriasis has cleared to an acceptable amount.

What Are The Side Effects Of Puva

The phototherapist will carefully explain all of the possible side effects of phototherapy before a course begins. The most common immediate side effect of PUVA phototherapy is a mild sunburn reaction. This may be more likely if the individual has been using other medications or herbal supplements which can cause sensitivity to light, so it is important to tell the phototherapist of anything being taken. This sunburn reaction is usually not serious, and the phototherapist will adjust the dose of the next treatment or postpone treatments until the redness has settled. Some people report some itchiness in the early stages of treatment, but this should soon settle. People on tablet PUVA may feel a little sick after taking the tablets. This maybe only a mild inconvenience but if it is intolerable, an alternative tablet is available and may help. Taking the tablets will sensitise the eyes to UVA and exposure to the sun may increase the risk of cataract formation, so eyes must be protected from sunlight or other sources of UVA for 12 hours or until night-time. After taking the tablets, patients should wear sunglasses or other UV protective eyewear, or avoid exposure to sunlight altogether.

How Does Red Light Therapy Work

In some treatment plans, red LED lights are combined with infrared and amber-colored LED lights to treat the skin. While infrared isnt visible to the human eye, red and amber light waves are longer than other colors and reach deeper into the skin. The red LED light waves reach about 1/3 inches deep into the skins surface, while infrared penetrates up to one inch into the tissue. Infrared light waves go past both the epidermis and the dermis to reach the skins collagen fibers.

The red, infrared and amber light waves stimulate skin rapid skin cell growth. This means skin damage that could take months or years to reverse can now take days or weeks. Red LED light therapy leaves skin feeling healthy, rejuvenated and glowing. The skin also becomes soft to the touch after treatment. With collagen and elastin production sped up, the skin will feel firm and supple. Blood circulation is improved, which reduces any redness, swelling or puffiness of the skin. Red light therapy is a truly holistic targeted skin treatment.

    How Does Phototherapy Work

Psoriasis Treatments: Is light therapy right for your psoriasis?

In phototherapy, the skin is exposed to a special type of light, emitted by a medical device commonly referred to as a phototherapy unit. These units range in size from hand-held and tabletop devices for spot treatment of small areas to cabinet or walk-in units for patients requiring full-body treatment, and can be used in a clinic or hospital setting or prescribed for use at home.

The medical lamps in these phototherapy units emit ultraviolet light in a specific wavelength that creates changes within the skin cells. The cells in most patients then begin to behave normally, which reduces or eliminates the symptoms of the skin disease.
