Are There Any Ingredients In Hair Dye To Avoid If You Have Scalp Psoriasis

When it comes to avoiding certain ingredients in hair dye, the answer unfortunately isn’t very simple. Hill recommended minimizing ammonia , as well as avoiding natural organic oils, as these can exacerbate psoriasis for some people. Dr Wong said people with more-sensitive scalps might want to avoid PPD, which is the most common cause of hair-dye allergies and skin irritation. However, she noted that if your psoriasis is under control, you shouldn’t need to worry about avoiding certain ingredients.

If you are really worried about the dye but want to experiment with color and aren’t touching up your roots, Hill suggests trying a hair-color technique, like balayage, that keeps dyes off your scalp altogether. In addition to this, since the hairline is commonly affected by psoriasis, Dr Wong recommends using a thick, petroleum-based emollient like Vaseline to protect surrounding skin and behind your ears to minimize potential irritation from contact with dyes.

In short, if your psoriasis is particularly severe or flaring, you shouldn’t dye your hair, as it could cause further irritation, but if your psoriasis is under control, there isn’t any reason you need to avoid coloring your hair. If you’re still uncertain, speak with your GP or dermatologist and visit a hair colorist who has experience with scalp conditions.

Dont Skip The Patch Test

A skin patch test done a couple of days before you plan to color is a good idea for anyone using hair dye, but it can be especially helpful if you have scalp psoriasis. Even if a product is PPD-free, you may still have a sensitivity to it.

So even if its inconvenient, if youre coloring in a salon, ask your stylist if you can stop by and take home a small sample of the mix.

You may be able to gauge your skins reaction by applying a small amount of hair dye on your inner forearm. Cover it with a bandage and wait two days to see what happens, suggests Pariser. If you develop a rash, you should stay away from it.

To play it extra safe, consider applying the coloring product to a small area of your scalp, advises the American Academy of Dermatology. If your scalp feels irritated in a few hours, you may want to swap that product for something gentler.

Even if your skin looks fine after patch testing, it makes sense to take some simple measures to lower your odds of a skin irritation. If you are dyeing your hair yourself, dont leave the dye on longer than the recommended time, wear protective gloves , and rinse all the dye completely out of your hair.

What Causes Scalp Psoriasis

While we know what causes psoriasis plaques to develop on the scalp , experts dont fully understand why someone develops the condition in the first place or what determines where those lesions will appear. Experts suspect there is a genetic component to psoriasis because people who have a family history of the condition are more likely to develop it, but the specific genes that could be linked to psoriasis are unknown8.

What experts do know, however, is that certain environmental factors can trigger psoriasis for the first time in people who are predisposed to having the condition. According to the Cleveland Clinic, common psoriasis triggers include9:

  • Really stressful situations, such as a divorce or losing a loved one
  • Having a skin injury, such as a cut, sunburn, or scratch

Nikki Parkinson Beauty

Ive had psoriasis since I was about nine years old.

My dad has had it pretty much forever.

Mine arrived post parentals divorce. I was a kid who internalised everything so, given its heredity tendencies, I guess it was bound to manifest its ugly scaly self on me at some time.

When it first appeared, it took up residence in the usual suspect places elbows, knees and scalp.

I cant remember when it kindly upped camp and shifted off my elbows and knees but I was grateful it did. Kids tease and this just gave them another thing to have a go at me about.

The scalp stuff? Yep, thats been my lifelong frenemy which I havent wanted to keep close but its stuck around anyway.

As a kid I was dragged around every skin specialist in Brisbanes Wickham Terrace. The only upshot of this was that I got a day off school every six months. It didnt improve my psoriasis but it did improve my resolve to mostly just let it be .

See, the idea of applying a sticky cream to my scalp through my thick head of hair was just not appealing. I still have nightmares about my well-meaning Nan taking to my scalp as a child with baby oil and a fine-toothed comb to try and remove it.

Mostly no-one knows I have it now except my hairdresser and anyone who sees me wearing a black top or dress. Even then they probably just think I have dandruff. Alas no, what you may see is just lovely little bits of my scalp. Icky.

Im also a somewhat vain person. Thats no secret.

How Do You Know If You Have Scabies In Your Hair And Scalp ...

Since one aspect of psoriasis is inflammation, finding ways to reduce and control inflammation can help to keep the condition manageable. There’s also initial research that suggests psoriasis is a condition that may be characterized by a leaky gut . Proudman suggests avoiding processed meats and processed foods high in sugar, salt or fat. “Eating anti-inflammatory foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables decreases inflammation and oxidative stress,” she says.

Austin-based holistic doctor Elena Villaneuva, D.C., confirms there is a direct connection between diet and inflammation. “There is a major connection between gut health and skin health,” Villaneuva says. “We’ve found that the key to reversing most skin conditions is to start on the inside.” She recommends avoiding gluten, sugar, and dairy altogetheras research has shown a connection between these foods and psoriasis.

How To Manage Scalp Psoriasis

Scalp psoriasis may result in the urge to scratch your scalp. Dont do this. Picking or scratching at your scalp can actually cause your psoriasis to flare up, bleed and result in hair loss.

  • When removing scales, do this with care. Part of treating scalp psoriasis means the scales will have to be removed.
  • Dont stress. Stress can result in a flare up of your psoriasis. We understand this treatment can be frustrating, but try to reduce stress as much as possible.
  • Pay attention to your hair care. When brushing your hair, be gentle. Limit the use of hot tools on your hair or wearing a tight hairstyle. Pulling on your hair can cause hair loss. Coloring and styling your hair may also cause your psoriasis to flare.
