I’m going to look at why zinc is good for your skin and what steps you can take if you think you have a zinc deficiency.

As mentioned, zinc is critical for good skin health because of its antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are extremely important in protecting the body against free radicals, tiny chemical particles that turn food into energy. However, when these free radicals get out of control, they can attack the body, damage our cells and possibly cause premature ageing, heart disease and skin diseases. Consequently, it is important to have a diet rich in antioxidant vitamins and minerals such as vitamins A,C, E and zinc in order to keep the free radicals under control.

How do you know when you have a zinc deficiency?The signs of zinc deficiency vary from person to person. However, there are a few common symptoms to look out for. The Science Says Zinc Bisglycinate Is Superior

The most older studies ranked the assimilation of zinc picolinate as the best. Thats why zinc picolinate is generally considered as better compared to other forms like zinc gluconate or zinc citrate.

In study from 1987 the absorption after oral administration of zinc picolinate, zinc citrate and zinc gluconate was tested.

The significant difference in hair, urine and red blood cell levels was found after supplementation of zinc picolinate only .

The comparative absorption of zinc after oral administration of three different complexed forms was studied in 15 healthy human volunteers in a double-blind four-period crossover trial. The individuals were randomly divided into four groups. Each group rotated for four week periods through a random sequence of oral supplementation including: zinc picolinate, zinc citrate, and zinc gluconate and placebo. Zinc was measured in hair, urine, erythrocyte and serum before and after each period. At the end of four weeks hair, urine and erythrocyte zinc levels rose significantly during zinc picolinate administration. There was no significant change in any of these parameters from zinc gluconate, zinc citrate or placebo administration. There was a small, insignificant rise in serum zinc during zinc picolinate, zinc citrate and placebo supplementation.

The recent studies show that zinc amino acid chelates but also amino acid chelates of other minerals are absorbed better.

As you can see zinc glycinate ranked the best.

Prevention Of Photodamage And Skin Cancers

Zinc oxide is widely used as a broad spectrum physical sunscreen. Its advantage lies in its low cost and an excellent safety profile. It has been used alone and in combination with other physical or chemical sunscreen agents. Recently microfine and nano-sized zinc oxide has become available which provides better cosmetic appeal and photoprotection than traditional zinc oxide preparations. Zinc oxide provides protection against UV-A1 superior to titanium oxide providing better spectrum protection .

Apart from diet and supplements, there is another way of treating psoriasis. In the past, physicians relied on these two elements to treat psoriasis. However, medical science has seen some advancements in the last few years. Light therapy is also used along with diets and supplements in the treatment of psoriasis.
