The Mediterranean diet, which includes lots of fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and lean meats, is anti-inflammatory and could lead to less psoriasis on the skin.
Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are also fiber-rich, and fiber helps feed your healthy gut bacteria, Dr. Prest says. Probiotics, including yogurt and fermented foods, and prebiotics, such as fruits and vegetables, also improve gut bacteria. Maintaining healthy gut bacteria reduces inflammation and can minimize symptoms of psoriasis.
If your diet hasnt been as healthy as it should be, its never too late to make changes. Dr. Prest says making healthy diet changes could improve your psoriasis symptoms within a few weeks.

Some rice extracts have been shown to exfoliate skin and even protect from the sun. But rice flour itself may not be potent enough to have these effects.

Which Foods Should I Eat For Psoriasis
Last week I shared a post with you on Instagram, listing the top ten potential triggers for eczema. The comments below the picture were a mix of ‘I can’t do this‘, ‘what’s left to eat‘ and ‘could you please do one of these posts for psoriasis‘!!
Today I do want to share something similar for psoriasis, but as well as discussing the foods which might be triggering your skin flares, I’m equally mindful to share with you the foods we should be focusing on including lots more of.
I also want to highlight that taking certain things out of your diet does not equal ‘boring and bland’. Making dietary changes to heal our skin is intended to be a lifelong program, so ensuring it’s exciting and sustainable is equally important.
Remember, the information I’m posting here is intended as a guide to help you find your main trigger culprits. This doesn’t mean never eating a slice of cake again or forever forgoing sweets and chocolate. It’s about finding a workable balance to heal your skin and stay healthy. As individuals, one food group may have a more significant impact on some of us compared to others. It can take a little trial and error, plus some food journaling to work out what most impacts your skin.

Red Processed Or Fatty Cuts Of Meat
“Saturated fat increases inflammation in the whole body through many pathways, and excessive intake may possibly worsen psoriasis,” Van Ark says.
She notes that any type of high-fat meat will also have high levels of saturated fat, so these should be limited. Especially:
- Red meat likehamburger and steak
- Processed deli meats like salami
To further help your psoriasis, you’ll want to swap those saturated fats for some healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which can help reduce chronic inflammation, Van Ark says. So, instead of steak for dinner, opt for salmon and a salad topped with walnuts and flax seeds.

Talk with your doctor if you need help with nutrition or weight loss, or if you notice that a certain food triggers a psoriasis flare. In one study, people who cut back on high-AGE foods appeared to have less inflammation in their bodies after 4 months. Choose baked, boiled, or steamed foods instead of fried.
Ways To Stop Baths And Showers From Worsening Your Psoriasis
Long hot showers can dry your skin
Long, hot showers and baths can dry your skin, which can cause psoriasis to flare.
Psoriasis makes your skin dry and easily irritated. Baths and showers can increase the dryness and irritation. To avoid this, dermatologists recommend these eight tips.
Take only one bath or shower a day.
Limit your showers to 5 minutes and baths to 15 minutes or less.
Use warmNOT hotwater every time.
Use a gentle, moisture-rich soap or cleanser made for sensitive skin. Deodorant soaps and scrubs are too harsh, so avoid them.
Wash your skin very gently with your hands. Skip the loofah, buff puffs, and wash clothes, which can irritate your skin and cause psoriasis to flare.
Rinse off the soap or cleanser gently but thoroughly.
Dry your skin very gently by blotting water from your skin with a towel, but leave a bit of water on your skin so that it feels damp.
Apply a fragrance-free moisturizer to all of your skin within five minutes of taking a shower or bath.
A thick cream or ointment works best. If thats too heavy, a fragrance-free lotion is okay. Try to apply a thick cream or ointment before getting into bed.

You must take utmost care while dealing with these scaly patches. Remember to be gentle else you may end up initiating rigorous itching.
Step: 1 Wash the affected area with water to remove impurities piled on your skin.
Step: 2 Pat dry using a soft cloth to remove any moisture on psoriasis.
Step: 3 Try any one of the below-mentioned recipes. Apply the oatmeal on psoriasis affected skin and allow it to dry.
Step: 4 Rinse it off with water and pat try again.
#1. Oatmeal and Honey
Honey is filled with healing, humectant and anti-inflammatory abilities, which are essential for treating psoriasis.
- Take finely grounded oatmeal and add some water to it.
- Now add 1 tbsp of raw honey to the bowl.
- Optionally, drop 2 drops of lemon juice and mix thoroughly.
- Apply this mixed mask on psoriasis affected skin.
- Allow it to dry for 20 minutes and then gently wash it off using normal water.
Avoid hot water, as it may irritate your skin and trigger itching.

Five Foods To Include For Psoriasis
Leafy Greens, Veg and Fruit
The simplest and most effective change I made when it came to healing my psoriasis, was massively upping my intake of fruit and veg! That might sound as though I’m oversimplifying things a little, but aside from excluding nightshades these vegetables are going to give your body a whole ton of vitamins and nutrients, which will support you in your skin healing journey.
To support the fact, this JAMA Dermatology study shows that sticking to a Mediterranean diet high in anti-inflammatory nutrients may lessen psoriasis severity. According to the studies author Emilie Sbidian, M.D., Ph.D., of Mondor Hospital in Paris, “The key point for the Mediterranean diet is a high proportion of fruits and vegetables and extra-virgin olive oil.”
There are advocates of raw food diets, but I find only eating raw vegetables can be quite taxing on the digestive system, so mixing it up with cooked, steamed, grilled or sauteed options works well for me.
If you think candida might be a problem for you, choose low sugar fruit such as berries rather than mango or bananas.
If you really can’t get on with eating fruit and veg, trying juicing them instead .
Fermented Foods and Probiotics
The simplest way to ensure you’re getting plenty of that healthy microbiome boosted is by adding a good quality probiotic like this one into your daily routine. This is the easiest method to make sure you’re getting a diverse range of the good stuff.
Can What You Eat Improve Or Worsen Your Psoriasis Symptoms
Overall, the jury is still out on whether eating certain foods, or avoiding others, can have a significant impact on the frequency or severity of psoriasis.
A review of studies published in JAMA Dermatology examined whether dietary changes might make different in people with psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis. The findings suggests that people who are overweight or obese may be able to reduce the severity of their psoriasis symptoms by adopting a low-calorie diet.
“We do know that psoriasis has been linked to obesity,” says Dr. Wentworth. “We often encourage weight loss for patients who are not at the weight that has been established as a goal for them with the assistance of their primary care provider.”
Per the JAMA Dermatology review, psoriasis patients with celiac disease may find that avoiding foods containing gluten may be helpful in managing their symptoms. “We have done studies to show that if someone has celiac disease antibodies, a gluten-free diet could potentially benefit their psoriasis,” says Dr. Wentworth.
But while there may not be one, cure-all, psoriasis treatment diet, evaluating what you eat is still a critical step in managing the disease says Victoria Yunez Behm, CNS, LDN, manager of nutrition science for the American Nutrition Association.
