Which Medication Works Best For Psoriasis

The American Academy of Dermatology and National Psoriasis Foundation published guidelines in 2018 for the treatment of psoriasis with biologics. A #1 biologic medication was not listed, since there really isnt one. Why is that?

CF101. CF101 is a first-in-class oral A3 adenosine receptor agonist currently in development by Can-Fite BioPharma for the treatment of patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. The adenosine A3 receptor is highly expressed in the immune system with evidence showing that it has a key role in regulation of neutrophil behavior, specifically inhibiting neutrophilic chemotaxis and oxidative burst.6 Overexpression of the A3 AR has previously been observed in auto-immune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohns disease, and psoriasis.7

What Are Biologic Medications For Psoriasis

New Drug Is Gamechanger In Psoriasis Treatment

A novel drug almost entirely cleared moderate to severe psoriasis in over 60% of the patients who took part in two phase three clinical trials of a new drug.

The University of Manchester andSalford Royal NHS Foundation Trustled studies on Bimekizumab , both published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine today, were funded byUCB Pharma the company that developed the treatment which could be available in as little as 12 months.

Given as an injection under the skin, Bimekizumab is a monoclonal antibody and the first to block both Interleukin 17A and Interleukin 17F which are overexpressed inpsoriasis.

One trial called BE RADIANT, compared the drug with Secukinumab, an IL17 A blocker:743 patients were enrolled and 373 patients were assigned to Bimekizumab

The BE SURE trial compared Bimekizumab withAdalimumab: of the478 patients enrolled, 319 patients were assigned to Bimekizumab.

Bimekizumab in both studies was given every 4 weeks for 16 weeks after which two maintenance schedules were possible: continue at every 4 weeks or go to an 8-week schedule .

Secukinumab and Adalimumab were given as per label.

The team assessed the efficacy of the treatments using thePsoriasis Area Severity Index with PASI 100 indicating clear skin.

New Era Of Psoriasis Treatment

Previously, Otezla® was approved for moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis, active psoriatic arthritis, and for oral ulcers associated with Behcetâs Disease.

The effect of tofacitinib on lipid levels and lipid-related parameters was investigated in patients with psoriasis from the OPT Pivotal 1 Phase III study.21 Data from this study suggests that tofacitinib results in small increases in total cholesterol , low-density lipoprotein cholesterol , and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, with the ratio of TC/HDL-C remaining unchanged. However, the effects of tofacitinib on various lipid-related parameters do not indicate an increased cardiovascular disease risk.21

The objective of this paper is to present a literature review of the various psoriatic treatments currently available on the market. This review describes the mechanisms and the characteristics of the most widely used psoriatic treatments.

Psoriasis is a noncontagious chronic inflammatory dermatosis affecting 2% of the world population . Psoriasis is characterized by recurrent episodes of red and scaly skin plaques that are sharply demarcated from adjacent normal skin . This disease is partly due to a genetic predisposition and other environmental factors . Psoriasis is a serious skin disease that affects a persons daily life on many levels including professional and social life. The physical and psychological impacts of psoriasis are comparable to those of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, or depression . The percentage of the body affected by psoriatic plaques can vary. It is possible to observe mild , moderate , and severe psoriasis in different people . The most common type of psoriasis is chronic plaque psoriasis or psoriasis vulgaris .
