Risks And Side Effects
Ketoconazole can have negative side effects that you should be aware of before using it. One of the most common side effects is skin irritation, which can take the form of pimple-like bumps where its used. In some individuals, it may also cause either oiliness or dryness of the hair or scalp, abnormal hair texture, or discoloration. It can cause permed hair to lose its curl as well.
In rare cases, ketoconazole shampoo can result in hair loss, so talk to your doctor right away if you notice this side effect.
How To Use Ketoconazole Topical
Use this medication on the skin only. Clean and thoroughly dry the area to be treated. Apply this medication to the affected skin, usually once or twice a day or as directed by your doctor. Dosage and length of treatment depends on the type of infection being treated. Do not apply this more often than prescribed. Your condition will not clear faster, but side effects may be increased.
Apply enough medication to cover the affected skin and some of the surrounding skin. After applying this medication, wash your hands. Do not wrap, cover or bandage the area unless directed to do so by your doctor.
Use this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. Remember to use it at the same time each day.
Continue to use this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after starting ketoconazole. Stopping the medication too early may allow the fungus to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection.
Inform your doctor if your condition persists after the prescribed amount of treatment or worsens at any time.
What Other Information Should I Know
Keep all appointments with your doctor.
Ketoconazole shampoo may remove the curl from hair that has been permanently waved .
Do not let anyone else use your medication. Your prescription is probably not refillable. If you still have symptoms of infection after you finish the ketoconazole, call your doctor.
It is important for you to keep a written list of all of the prescription and nonprescription medicines you are taking, as well as any products such as vitamins, minerals, or other dietary supplements. You should bring this list with you each time you visit a doctor or if you are admitted to a hospital. It is also important information to carry with you in case of emergencies.

What Other Drugs Will Affect Ketoconazole
Some medicines can make it harder for your body to absorb ketoconazole. If you take an antacid, take it 1 hour before or 2 hours after you take ketoconazole. Tell your doctor if you also take a stomach acid reducer, such as Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix, Zantac, and others.
Sometimes it is not safe to use certain medications at the same time. Some drugs can affect your blood levels of other drugs you take, which may increase side effects or make the medications less effective.
Ketoconazole can cause a serious heart problem. Your risk may be higher if you also use certain other medicines for infections, asthma, heart problems, high blood pressure, depression, mental illness, cancer, malaria, or HIV.
Many drugs can affect ketoconazole. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Not all possible interactions are listed here. Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any medicine you start or stop using.

Ingredients To Look For
The following ingredients can help reduce itchiness and flakes, as well as gently soften and remove thick scale.
- Hydrocortisone is a mild corticosteroid that can decrease itching and inflammation.
- Coal tar decreases skin cell growth and helps the scalp shed dead skin cells.
- Salicylic acid is a âkeratolytic,â or peeling agent, that helps soften and remove thick scale. Once scale is removed, other medications will be able to penetrate the skin more easily, potentially increasing effectiveness.
Oats Or Colloidal Oatmeal
Some people also notice that their psoriasis symptoms get worse after eating certain foods or as a result of allergies. Research has not yet conclusively proven that these factors can trigger psoriasis, however.
It is worth noting that environmental triggers alone do not cause psoriasis. People without a genetic predisposition for psoriasis will not develop it, even when they experience these triggers.
In the following sections, we will cover the different types of shampoo and home remedies that people with scalp psoriasis can try.

Ketoconazole Shampoo For Hair Loss: Uses Effectiveness And More
Medically reviewed by Kristin Hall, FNP
Ketoconazole is an antifungal medication thats approved by the FDA to treat several fungal infections that can affect the skin.
Its also a common active ingredient in hair loss shampoos and a medication youll often see recommended, typically in the form of Nizoral® shampoo, as part of an at-home protocol used to prevent hair loss.
Ketoconazole is scientifically linked to improvements in hair growth, making it worth using as a hair loss treatment option. Its also easy to apply, since all thats required is a quick wash in the shower a few times a week.
Here, we explain how ketoconazole shampoo works as a hair loss treatment, as well as how you can use it for hair loss and other conditions that may affect your scalp.
Weve also listed other treatments for hair loss to be aware of if youre starting to develop a receding hairline or other signs of male pattern baldness.

Should You Use A Ketoconazole Shampoo Like Nizoral
Much like minoxidil and finasteride, ketoconazole shampoo is often promoted online as one of the big three hair loss treatments.
Yet while there isnt as much scientific research to support ketoconazole as a treatment for hair loss as there is for minoxidil and finasteride, the studies available look promising.
Ketoconazole appears to have real benefits, although we dont yet know how effective it is over the long term. Its worth noting that the studies which reviewed ketoconazole as a hair loss treatment used the stronger ketoconazole 2% solution, which requires a prescription.
In the United States, the less powerful 1% version of ketoconazole shampoo is widely available over the counter.
However, youll need to talk to your healthcare provider if youd like to use the stronger ketoconazole 2% shampoo as part of your hair loss prevention regimen.
Psoriasis Shampoos Your Scalp Will Love
You deserve a product that keeps the itching and flaking at bay.
Over-the-counter shampoos are good for treating mild scalp psoriasis symptoms or removing scales so prescription scalp topicals can penetrate. With help from Meghan Feely, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist in New Jersey and New York City, who serves as a clinical instructor at Mount Sinai Hospitalâs department of dermatology, we compiled the following tips.
The following shampoos have all received the NPF Seal of Recognition, which highlights OTC products that are created to be safe for people with psoriasis.
MG217 Medicated Conditioning Coal Tar Formula ShampooActive ingredient: 3% coal tar
Neutrogena T/Gel Therapeutic Shampoo-Stubborn ItchActive ingredient: 0.5% coal tar
Dermarest Psoriasis Medicated Shampoo Plus ConditionerActive ingredient: 3% salicylic acid
3 things to remember
Use all products as directed. Even effective treatments can cause side effects, such as irritation, itching and redness, that can aggravate psoriasis.
Medicated shampoos are meant to treat the scalp, not the hair. Separate sections of hair and gently apply medicated products only to roots. You can follow medicated shampoos with a moisturizing conditioner.
The best way to know if an OTC product is safe and effective: Ask your dermatologist.

Why Is This Medication Prescribed
Ketoconazole cream is used to treat tinea corporis , tinea cruris , tinea pedis , tinea versicolor , and yeast infections of the skin. Prescription ketoconazole shampoo is used to treat tinea versicolor. Over-the-counter ketoconazole shampoo is used to control flaking, scaling, and itching of the scalp caused by dandruff. Ketoconazole is in a class of antifungal medications called imidazoles. It works by slowing the growth of fungi that cause infection.
When You Need Treatments In Addition To Psoriasis Shampoo
When your scalp psoriasis is more severe, psoriasis shampoo alone may not be enough to treat it. It’s also possible that even if the shampoo works for you initially, your psoriasis may eventually become resistant to its effects. In these cases, your doctor may recommend other treatments, such as topical scalp medications, a course of steroid medication, or ultraviolet light treatments.
Biologic drugs have proven to be effective in treating scalp psoriasis. A study of 145 patients with scalp psoriasis published in December 2016 in the Journal of European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology found the biologic drugs, uystekinumab and infliximab to be most beneficial, with adlimumab and etanercept also yielding satisfactory results.
In extreme cases, Takeshita recommends that people use oil-based topical steroids to help with softening and gentle removal of the scales. Salicylic acid in shampoos is helpful, but in very severe cases a person needs more than topical treatments such as, oral systemics or biologics, Takeshita says. Phototherapy can sometimes be helpful for severe cases as well, but usually this approach is reserved for those who have extremely short hair, or are bald, since the hair gets in the way of treatment.
Although it can be challenging and even frustrating at times to deal with scalp psoriasis, you can bring it under control once you get on the right treatment plan.

What Causes Seborrheic Dermatitis
One of the reasons that cause Seborrheic Dermatitis or Seborrheic Eczema is a low immune system defense. Sometimes, your body can be weak and, therefore, are not strong enough to protect itself against infection, especially if levels of B2, B6 vitamins and biotin are low .
Seborrheic Dermatitis happens due to a production overdrive of the sebaceous glands. In other words, your body produces oil to make sure the skin and scalp stay hydrated and lubricated. However, aggressive skin products and/or washing your face, scalp or back too much exacerbate the situation, as removing the skin oily layer encourages your sebaceous glands to produce even more sebum. Two facial washes per daily is the general recommendation limit.
Another reason why Seborrheic Eczema occurs may be due to fungal infection called Malassezia Globosa. Its a natural fungus that our body produces. Some people are more sensitive to it and it leads the yeast to discharge toxic substances irritating and inflaming the skin as a reaction.
Stress, Anxiety and Fatigue are known factors that can stimulate and inflame the skin causing sebum overproduction.
