Does Humira Help With Psoriasis

Humira Drug Class And Form

Psoriasis and My first Week on Humira

Humira contains the active drug adalimumab, which is a biologic medication. Biologics are medications made from living cells. Adalimumab belongs to a class of medications known as tumor necrosis factor blockers. TNF is a protein made by your body.

Humira comes in three forms: a single-dose pen, a single-dose prefilled syringe, and a single-dose vial of liquid solution. To learn the strengths of the forms, see the Humira dosage section below.

The drug is given as an injection just under your skin . A healthcare provider can give you Humira injections. But you may be able to give yourself injections at home with the pen or syringe if your doctor approves. Youd need to be trained first. The vial form of Humira can be used only by healthcare providers. You wont be able to use vials yourself.

Can Biosimilars Be Used With Other Treatments

It is important to tell your health care provider about all treatments, medicines, vitamins or supplements that you are taking.

Like all biologics, biosimilars can be used with other treatment options including topicals and phototherapy. The biologics Enbrel, Humira and Remicade are shown to be safe and effective when taken with methotrexate. This means that their biosimilars, including Erelzi, Amjevita, and Inflectra, may be safe and effective when taken with methotrexate.

  • With Inflectra being the biosimilar to Remicade, its use in combination with phototherapy may increase the risk for skin cancer.
  • No drugs that interact with biologics should be combined with their respective biosimilars.

Could I Experience Long

Its possible. Some people may experience long-term side effects from Humira.

Examples of long-term side effects that Humira can cause include:

  • cancer*

What Blood Tests Will I Need Before Or During Humira Treatment

Youll need several tests before starting Humira treatment and while you take the drug, including:

  • Tuberculosis . Before you start taking Humira, your doctor will check you for TB.* While you take the medication, theyll monitor you for any symptoms of infection. This is because Humira can weaken your immune system and make you more likely to develop an infection.
  • Hepatitis B. Your doctor will also want to see if you have the hepatitis B virus . Humira can cause HBV to become reactivated in people who previously had active HBV. Your doctor may keep testing you for HBV while you take Humira and for several months after you stop your treatment.
  • Liver function. While you take Humira, your doctor will likely order blood tests to make sure your liver is working properly. Humira can cause liver damage and sudden liver failure in rare cases.
  • Humira level. During your treatment with Humira, your doctor may also order lab tests to check your Humira level. Although more research is needed, one study showed that keeping Humira levels in the blood within a specific range may be ideal for treatment.
  • Humira antibodies. In addition, your doctor may order a blood test that checks for antibodies to Humira. People who form antibodies against Humira are less likely to respond well to the drug.

If you have questions about what tests youll need before and during your Humira treatment, check with your doctor.

Humira Improves Life With Psoriasis

My psoriasis story: Humira

Study Shows Dramatic Improvement in Moderate and Severe Psoriasis

Aug. 4, 2004 — Three months ago, the rheumatoid arthritis drug Enbrel became the first drug of its kind to win FDA approval for the treatment of psoriasis. Now, early research suggests that the similarly acting arthritis drug Humira is also highly effective in treating the debilitating skin condition.

After 24 weeks of treatment with every-other week injections of Humira, 42% of patients with moderate or severe psoriasis treated experienced improvements in symptoms of 90% or more. Two thirds of patients experienced a 75% or greater reduction in symptoms.

After 24 weeks of treatment, the patients also reported that their quality of life was no longer affected by psoriasis.

“Patients often feel liberated ,” study researcher Kenneth B. Gordon, MD, tells WebMD. “They are often reluctant to start on medication, but once they start taking and realize how much better they feel, they don’t want to stop taking them.”

Pharmacist Tips For Humira

You should receive injection training from your healthcare provider or care team. If you haven’t, contact the clinic or call 1-800-4HUMIRA. Don’t try to give yourself a Humira injection if you don’t know how.

Store Humira in the refrigerator. Keep it in its original container to protect it from light. Never freeze it. If you’re traveling or don’t have access to a refrigerator, it can be left at room temperature for 14 days. After 14 days, it should be thrown away.

Once you’re ready for your injection, take your pen or syringe out of the refrigerator. Let it warm up to room temperature for about 15 to 30 minutes. This will help decrease discomfort and pain with injection. Don’t try to warm it up by putting it in the microwave or in hot water.

Humira is a clear and colorless solution. Don’t use any pens or syringes if the solution is cloudy, discolored, or has particles floating around in it. Call your pharmacist if this happens, so you can get a replacement. Air bubbles are fine.

Do your best to avoid dropping your Humira pens or syringes. Some of the products are made of glass and can break.

Let your provider know if you have a latex allergy. Many of Humira products have latex in the cap or needle cover.

Prices for Humira start at just $5809.17 with a GoodRx coupon. Theyâre fast, easy-to-use and free!

You Should Stick To Your Schedule

As many as 3 in 10 people with psoriasis donât take their meds regularly. That can make the drugs not work as well. If you happen to miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If you still have trouble, try a smartphone app that prompts you with reminders. If you skip doses because of side effects, talk to your doctor. You may be able to find another treatment that works just as well but bothers you less.

Theyre Considered Safe But Do Have Potential Side Effects

The most common side effects of biologics are pain and skin reactions at the site of the injection. Its also possible to have an allergic reaction that leads to a rash, itchiness, shortness of breath, or dizziness.

Since biologics work by suppressing your immune system, they increase your susceptibility to infections, such as bacterial and fungal infections, and may increase your risk of tuberculosis and lymphoma. Before starting a biologic, your doctor will run tests to make sure the drug is safe for you to take.

Humira Does Not Improve Aortic Vascular Inflammation In Psoriasis Patients

by Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania

An antibody used to treat the skin disease psoriasis and other chronic autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease has no effect on aortic inflammationa key marker of future risk of major cardiovascular eventsunlike other antibodies that target different aspects of the immune system. Researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, in collaboration with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute , led a multi-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study and found patients taking the drug adalimumabmarketed as Humirasaw no change in aortic inflammation, as assessed by nuclear imaging, when compared to the placebo group. However, the drug did improve other key markers of inflammation known to predict future cardiovascular eventswhich suggests the drug may have a cardiovascular benefit despite the lack of change in aortic vascular inflammation. The study was published today in the journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging, and senior author Joel M. Gelfand, MD MSCE, a professor of Dermatology and Epidemiology at Penn, will present the findings today at the International Investigative Dermatology 2018 Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida.

Despite neutral imaging results, adalimumab did improve other key markers of inflammation in the blood including GlycA, CRP, TNF, and IL-6.

    Humira For Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Humira is FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe hidradenitis suppurativa, a chronic skin condition. Chronic means long term. The main symptoms are painful skin breakouts that can occur in areas such as the armpits, groin, and inner thighs. These breakouts are often painful and can take numerous forms, including pimple-like red bumps, cysts or nodules, and boils. The breakouts can be triggered or worsened by things like stress, heat, and hormonal changes.

Its not known exactly what leads to HS, but an overactive immune system is believed to be one possible cause. Humira treats HS by blocking a protein called tumor necrosis factor . This decreases the activity of your immune system, leading to a reduction in the number and severity of skin breakouts.

    Effectiveness for hidradenitis suppurativa

Humira has been proven effective in adults with moderate to severe HS.

In clinical studies, people with HS received either Humira or a placebo. People in both groups also used a topical antiseptic wash each day. Researchers wanted to see if Humira was better than a placebo at reducing the number of skin lesions and breakouts by at least 50%. This is defined as a clinical response.

The researchers found that 42% to 59% of people who took Humira had a clinical response, compared with only 26% to 28% of people who took a placebo.
