This approach uses ultraviolet A light with psoralen, a medication that increases your sensitivity to light. Psoralen can be:

  • taken orally
  • applied topically

In general, PUVA is highly effective but not widely used or available.

Oral PUVA comes with the highest risk of drug interactions and side effects . Its most effective when combined with an oral retinoid.

Bath PUVA works best for adults with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Its performed more often in Europe than in the United States. This is primarily because it uses trimethylpsoralen, a form of psoralen that the Food and Drug Administration hasnt approved.

Topical PUVA may be of particular benefit to adults with palmoplantar psoriasis or palmoplantar pustular psoriasis. It can also be used for localized psoriasis.

Other types of phototherapy that either arent as effective, widely recommended, or widely used are described below.

What Light Is And How Blue Light Affects Our Health

philips bluecontrol uses LED light to treat psoriasis skin ...

Light is electromagnetic radiation that is visible to the human eye. The radiation has different wavelengths and each wavelength is seen as a different color. Short wavelengths are seen as blue light , middle wavelengths as green and long wavelengths as red . Light affects a persons hormone balance, immune system and metabolism. But not all light is the same. Depending on the wavelength, concentration and intensity, light can brighten up a room, emit pleasant warmth or even help to destroy cancer cells. Blue light is free of ultraviolet radiation and in the form used in Philips BlueControl is not toxic to the skin. Light-emitting diodes are a highly energy-efficient light source. They have been used in household and vehicle lighting for decades. Now the blue LED light is providing an effective and milld new psoriasis treatment. When blue light illuminates the skin, it stimulates a variety of natural processes. In the case of psoriasis treatment, blue light suppresses the activation of certain immune cells, the dendritic cells, which reduces inflammation of the skin and alleviates plaque symptoms. The natural blue light psoriasis treatment also helps to reduce the accelerated production of skin cells, which is associated with psoriasis.

Philips Bluecontrol Advance 3 Month Update

Regular readers of my blog will know that I have been testing the Philips BlueControl Advance, for the treatment of mild to moderate plaque psoriasis.

For those not aware, the Philips BlueControl Advance device is the worlds first wearable Blue LED Light treatment for treating mild moderate plaque psoriasis on the arms and legs.

It is used to treat each plaque once per day, with a single treatment taking just 15 minutes.

I am going to admit now that I was really sceptical at first. I have tried numerous creams over the years that have little to no effect on my psoriasis and it has progressively got worse as I have got older.

Getting into a routine of using it is a bit of a challenge at first and you have to work out when is best for you to use it. For me, it is now an evening habit and I pop it on once the kids are in bed and I am watching my latest Netflix binge .

In my first post I brought it to peoples attention that you dont see instant results with BlueControl Advance and different people respond at different rates. After four weeks using it, I noticed that a particularly raised and sore area of psoriasis on my thigh is a lot less inflamed and the soreness had subsided. At 8 weeks there was no soreness, a lot less flaking and I could see patches of skin starting to heal.

So what do the next four weeks progress look like?

Now Philips, please could you invent a device to treat the scalp too please.

How Blue Light Therapy Works

Blue light therapy treatment is usually a very quick process, and is almost always done as an outpatient procedure. The exception to this may be photodynamic therapy on high-risk areas for cancer treatment.

In office, your doctor or skin care specialist will escort you to a darkened room. If theyre using photosynthesizing drugs, theyll apply the medication topically, directly to the area being treated.

If these drugs are being used, the medication may need to be on the skin for a couple of hours up to a couple of days, for the skin to absorb the medication. Regardless of how long its left on, youll be advised to stay out of the sunlight and other bright light, protect your skin, and stay indoors as much as possible while the medication is on.

When your doctor administers the light treatment, theyll give you goggles to wear to protect your eyes, and then theyll apply light to the target area.

Treatment sessions can be anywhere from 15 to 90 minutes long, depending on the area being treated, how large it is, and if a topical medication has been applied. If its just one small area being treated, like a single spot of skin cancer, the affected area will have blue light applied to it for about 17 minutes.

People with depression and depression with a seasonal pattern, may have their own blue light therapy devices at home, which they can use on a daily basis to resolve symptoms.

Red Light Therapy For Eczema

Blue LED Light Therapy

In one of the initial human trials analyzing red light treatment and eczema, researchers followed 81 patients for nearly a year, measuring how symptoms progressed with regular light treatments. The researchers evaluated eczema rashes before, during, and after patients received red light therapy treatments.

Participants received just a single, two-minute red light therapy session per week. Even with such short treatments, they saw considerable improvements in common eczema symptoms, including reductions in bumps , flaking skin , redness , and pimples .

The research team also evaluated itchiness levels before, during, and after red light therapy. Patients picked their skin less and had fewer leathery patches when treated with red light therapy. The study also noted there were no side effects during or after the red light treatments, in line with hundreds of other trials and studies on red light therapy for skin and health.

Researchers concluded that they consider that light therapy may become the new therapy of choice for common eczema treatment.

Model Implementation And Analysis

The model was implemented in Matlab . The ODE system was solved with ode-solver ode15s. The inputs of the model were the BL irradiation parameters and the initial cell density of the 12 keratinocyte populations representing an psoriatic epidermis . The total keratinocytes cell density in the simulated epidermis at t = 0 was of 217,556 cells per mm2, which is 2 times higher than that of healthy skin . BLISS is available at GitHub1 and the BioModels Database2 with identifier MODEL1701090001.

Table 2. Blue light irradiation parameters.

Table 3. Initial cell density distribution .

Data from the clinical investigation of Pfaff et al. was used to verify the adequate description of BL treatment of psoriasis by the model.

Multiple Parameter Sensitivity Analysis

Finally, this value was used to derive the sensitivity of each parameter on the cell density of all keratinocyte populations at each of the six differentiation states and the local psoriasis severity index. Additionally, a local sensitivity analysis was performed for the parameters identified by the MPSA for further understanding of how small perturbations in these parameters reflect on the output of the model.

Recruitment And Status Of The Study

The first enrollment took place in March 2017. The study duration per patient is 13 weeks , and the estimated total time frame for recruitment of 150 patients is 14 months . During July to September, no irradiations will take place due to the possible improvement of disease severity linked to the increased natural sun exposure.

How Long Has Red Light Therapy Been Around

Philips BlueControl user talks about plaque psoriasis and blue light

Scientists at National Aeronautics and Space Administration and Quantum Devices, Inc. first discovered red light as a way to grow plants in space back in the early 1990s. Red LEDs produce light thats 10 times brighter than the suns rays. They also learned that this intense light helps energy metabolism in plant cells and promotes growth and photosynthesis.

From 1995 to 1998, the Marshall Space Flight Center challenged QDI to study red light for its potential application in medicine. In other words, they wanted to see if the red light that energized plant cells would work the same way on human cells.

The primary focus of this research was to determine if RLT might affect certain conditions that impact astronauts. Specifically, the scientists wanted to see if RLT could help with muscle atrophy and bone density issues that arise from long periods of weightlessness. Wounds also heal slowly in space, so that was another key focus area of their studies.

Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology examined the effects of RLT versus blue light therapy for individuals with psoriasis. Participants had high-dose treatments three times per week for four consecutive weeks while applying a 10 percent salicylic acid solution to plaques.

Its important to remember that these treatments were done with high doses in a medical setting. The results may vary greatly if the therapy is performed at home or a salon or wellness center.

What Is Red Light Therapy

RLT is a form of light therapy that uses light emitting diodes to treat conditions from acne to persistent wounds. Some people with psoriasis undergo light therapy with ultraviolet rays, but RLT doesnt contain any UV rays.

In a hospital setting, when RLT is combined with certain medication, it may be referred to as photodynamic therapy.

You dont necessarily need to see a doctor to test out RLT. There are various consumer products on the market aimed at cosmetic applications. Many tanning salons, like B-Tan Tanning in parts of Florida, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, offer red light beds. These salons say that red light beds help reduce:
