If you’re thinking about trying a psoriasis diet, talk to your doctor first. Theyââ¬â¢ll probably tell you that any diet that cuts down on the amount of junk food and alcohol you eat and drink is OK.

Stay away from extreme diets that claim to cure psoriasis with things like fasting or enemas. They won’t work and can even be dangerous. And don’t assume that supplements are helpful or even safe. Always talk to your doctor before using any supplements or alternative medicines.

Your body makes vitamin D from cholesterol but it needs sunlight to do it. Because skin cancer is also a health concern weve been trained to cover up with clothes and sunscreen. The other obvious issue here is that most people are sedentary and do not leave indoors for much of the day.

Vitamin D is stored in fat so if you are overweight or obese, so in addition to the above issues, if youre storing fat and never burning it your vitamin d may remain sequestered.

Recent research recommends around 2000 IU of vitamin D daily or enough to keep your levels in check .

How? Vitamin D relatively scarce in food but the best naturally occuring sources of vitamin D are:

· Cod liver oil

· Sardines

· Liver

Supplements may also be warranted here, particularly if you are deficient. In general, every 1000 IU of supplemental vitamin D raises serum levels by about 10 ng/mL .

Can Psoriasis Kill You

Although psoriasis isnt considered to be a terminal condition, a 2017 study found that people with psoriasis that covered at least 10 percent of their body had 1.79 times greater risk for death in comparison to the general population.

Findings also showed that these people with more severe psoriasis had a greater risk for developing other serious, potentially life threatening conditions. Those include:

  • chronic kidney disease
  • cardiovascular disease
  • diabetes

The study authors concluded that individuals with high surface area psoriasis should be screened for health prevention measures in order to help close the mortality gap.

Whether psoriasis itself is an autoimmune condition has yet to be proven. But its considered to be a T-cell mediated disorder of immune dysregulation.

Not everyone with psoriasis will be diagnosed with an additional inflammatory- or autoimmune-related health condition. But the risk for developing one does increase when youre diagnosed with psoriasis.

Nightshades are group of fruits and vegetables that make up part of the deadly nightshade family of plants. Scientific evidence is still a little hard to come by when it comes to nightshades. Remember, someone has to pay for these studies and nobody is going to benefit from you eliminating tomatoes from your diet! Weight Loss Diet Can Help If Youre Overweight

If you have psoriasis and are overweight, losing weight can:

  • Lead to less psoriasis on your skin

  • Make psoriasis medication more effective

These effects can happen quickly, according to studies. In one small study of patients with psoriasis who were overweight, half of the patients followed a low-calorie diet. In just 16 weeks, the patients following the low-calorie diet had less psoriasis than the non-dieting group of patients with psoriasis.

During a clinical trial, dermatologists saw similar results. In this trial, dermatologists enrolled 303 patients with long-term plaque psoriasis. All patients were overweight and receiving treatment for psoriasis. Even with treatment, all continued to have psoriasis on their skin.

In this clinical trial, half the patients were given a diet to follow and advice about the importance of exercising. The other group of patients was given information about how weight loss could be helpful. All patients were asked to lose 5% of their body weight within 20 weeks.

Patients in both groups lost weight. Those who lost 5% of their body weight had far less psoriasis on their skin. This trial shows that even a small amount of weight loss can reduce the amount of psoriasis on your skin.

Weight loss can help because both psoriasis and being overweight increase inflammation in your body. When you reduce inflammation, it can lead to less psoriasis on your skin.

Nightshades And Psoriasis Connection

Nightshades or their correct scientific name, Solanaceae species are often rich in alkaloids whose toxicity to humans and animals ranges from mildly irritating to fatal in small quantities. Tobacco also includes these harmful alkaloids.

Natural Health practitioners tend to advise total avoidance of the nightshade family if you suffer from chronic inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and psoriasis. In fact one in three arthritis sufferers react badly to nightshades. While this is no way conclusive that it affects your psoriasis condition, I tend to avoid this group as a precaution but I do have some from time to time.

If you can stick to the above you should stop further outbreaks of psoriasis, as is what happened in my case. The emphasis must now be on adding the good, natural healing foods to your body, so you can repair your leaky gut and finally give your body the best possible chance of healing your skin from the inside out.

Once your psoriasis is under control, you can start to reintroduce some of the above foods into your diet. If you see a reaction then simply add it to your foods that you should avoid list.
