Natural Psoriasis Treatment During Pregnancy

Psoriasis Fertility And Genes

Psoriasis and Pregnancy

First, psoriasis in and of itself doesnt affect a mans or womans reproductive system, although a study published in December 2018 in the International Journal of Dermatology reports that rates of sexual dysfunction are higher among those with the condition. The analysis also revealed that men with untreated psoriasis have lower-than-normal levels of testosterone, which may affect their ability to produce sperm.

While you cant pass psoriasis onto your newborn through skin contact or breastfeeding, you may pass on genes that put your child at a slightly higher risk for psoriasis. According to the National Psoriasis Foundation if one parent has psoriasis, theres approximately a 10 percent chance of the child developing it. That increases to 50 percent if both parents have the condition. Even then, it doesnt automatically mean your child will develop psoriasis. People also need to be exposed to specific factors that trigger their particular genes to cause psoriasis. About 10 percent of the population has one or more of the genes that predisposes them to psoriasis, but only 2 to 3 percent of the population develops it.

Your Skin And Pregnancy

Most women expect certain changes, such as backaches and stretch marks, to happen during pregnancy. The changes that often surprise pregnant women are those that affect all the skin, including the hair and nails.

Changes to your skin can have many causes. Some are linked to hormone changes that occur only during pregnancy. Other skin problems may have been present for some time before you were pregnant and then changed during pregnancy. For most skin changes, however, doctors know little about exactly what causes them.

Inadequate Awareness And Misconceptions About The Interaction Of Psoriasis And Pregnancy

Psoriasis and pre-pregnancy period

Generally, impaired quality of life has been found to be more frequent in women with psoriasis as compared to men with psoriasis. Although it is not thought to affect fertility, pregnancy rates have been observed to be approximately 22% lower in women with psoriasis. Among the reasons for this, it has been suggested that many factors such as womens unwillingness to voluntarily, concerns about pregnancy and/or postpartum disease activity, fear of the effect of psoriasis treatments on pregnancy and baby, as well decreased closeness due to embarrassment and/or physical inability play a role .

Psoriasis and pregnancy period

Murase et al. observed that pregnant women with psoriasis did not have information about the effect of treatment options on pregnancy . During pregnancy, patients were mostly referred to gynecology, only half of them were asked for dermatologist or rheumatologist consultations for psoriasis . A planned treatment was present in 64% of women with PsA and only 28% of women with psoriasis .

Pregnancy results are quite variable in women with psoriasis. Recently, Lambe et al. observed that women with psoriasis were younger at first birth and had longer interpregnancy intervals but did not differ in final parity in comparison to women without psoriasis . Although there are some studies reporting preterm delivery, low birth weight and recurrent miscarriages, the results are contradictory . In a systematic review of nine observational studies , there was no consistent evidence associated with an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes in women with psoriasis . Similarly, in a study using the National Inpatient Sample database in the United States , maternal psoriasis/PsA had no significant effect on maternal/fetal death. In addition, the prevalence of preterm delivery, premature rupture of membranes, postpartum hemorrhage and cesarean delivery are similar to the control group . However, there are studies that determine the relationship between disease activity and pregnancy complications or negative pregnancy outcomes . In a cohort study using prospective data from Denmark and Sweden , the increased risk of gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, preeclampsia and emergency cesarean section in women with psoriasis was higher in those with severe clinical variants. The risk of moderate preterm delivery and low birth weight were also found to be high. Women with PsA also had an increased risk of gestational hypertension and preeclampsia .

Diet And Psoriasis: What’s The Connection

Can your diet help keep psoriasis under control? Maybe. An observational study published online July 25, 2018, by JAMA Dermatology found that people with psoriasis who followed a Mediterranean diet an eating pattern rich in fruits and vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fish, fruit, nuts, and extra-virgin olive oil experienced fewer severe flare-ups. This was only an association and more research is needed, but experts believe the Mediterranean diet contains many foods that have an anti-inflammatory effect in the body and may offer extra protection against psoriasis triggers.

The Link Between Pregnancy And Eczema

Pregnancy gave me Psoriasis….| Brittany’s Room

Eczema flares are the result of different environmental and internal triggers, and it appears pregnancy is one of them, according to a past study published in The BMJ. This is especially true if youve dealt with eczema before. Women with a history of eczema prior to pregnancy have a significant risk of an eczema flare during pregnancy, Dr. Friedmann says.

About 20 to 40 percent of women who experience eczema while expecting have had it before, according to the National Eczema Society. For these women, it tends to worsen during the second trimester , though it can occur in the first or third trimesters as well.

Unfortunately, not having experienced eczema before doesnt mean youre in the clear its entirely possible for eczema to appear for the first time while pregnant, Friedmann says.

So, why does pregnancy seem to exacerbate eczema symptoms? Blame those shifting hormones. Eczema symptoms during pregnancy are largely related to the impact of female sex hormones on the immune system, says Natalie Yin, MD, an assistant professor of dermatology with Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. She explains that during pregnancy, the immune system shifts from a Th1 response to a Th2 response in order to protect the fetus.

Treatment Of Psoriasis In Females In Consideration Of Childbearing Age

Patient counseling before conception is important. A woman of reproductive age with psoriasis should be asked about her plans in order to select appropriate medications and provide exhaustive information. Adjustment of therapy in a patient planning to become pregnant or during early pregnancy is needed.

In consideration of the available findings regarding the safety profile of psoriasis medications in pregnancy and the overall benign prognostic nature of psoriasis, the assessment of the risk/benefit ratio supports a cautious approach to women of childbearing age with psoriasis. In cases with severe disease, the best systemic drug to be used is CsA, based on the consistent amount of data suggesting reassuring aspects. These positive aspects and the absence of teratogenic and mutagenic potential permit a confident use of CsA in a female of childbearing age without a rigorous need of contraception, and with the possibility of a safe continuation of pregnancy after stopping the drug upon pregnancy recognition.

In clinical practice, the ordinary uncomplicated course of most psoriasis forms does not require the continuation of a systemic drug during pregnancy, which is usually stopped mainly for medico-legal issues. Literature suggests that CsA therapy during pregnancy should be carefully considered by the treating physician, but may be a safe alternative for patients with autoimmune disease refractory to conventional treatment.

Its not only your body that changes during pregnancy your skin can go through a roller coaster of changes, too. In fact, more than 90 percent of women report having significant skin changes during pregnancy due to the shifts that occur within the bodys endocrinological, immunological, metabolic, and vascular systems while growing a baby, according to a study published in the OctoberDecember 2014 issue of the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care.

The effect pregnancy can have on the skin varies from woman to woman. Some women might see improvements to their complexion, giving them what many call the pregnancy glow, according to the American Pregnancy Association. Others may experience worse symptoms of preexisting skin conditions.

If you do notice your skin start to change, chances are its related to eczema, aka atopic dermatitis, a condition marked by red, itchy patches of skin, according to the Mayo Clinic. It accounts for between 33 and 50 percent of skin issues that develop during this time in a womans life, according to the National Eczema Society.
