Is There A Natural Cure For Psoriasis

Mechanisms Of Appearance Of The Disease

The specific causes and triggers of psoriasis are unknown. The disease has genetic, immunological, microbiological and environmental components.

Excessive stimulation of the immune system causes inflammation of the dermis . As a result, the epidermis renews itself too quickly, in only four to six days, instead of the usual three weeks. Epidermal cells accumulate on the surface of the skin and form a layer of white dandruff called scales. Perfectly harmless, they have the disadvantage of being unattractive.

We now understand better the immunological mechanisms leading to this inflammation. In particular, a molecule called TNF alpha is produced in excess in the skin by certain immune cells it is probably responsible for the important skin inflammation of psoriasis. New drugs that specifically block it can now be very effective.

In almost a third of cases, there is a family predisposition. A number of genes have been identified as potential risk markers, some of which would be involved in the regulation of the immune system.

How Can You Measure Inflammation In The Body

While certain foods are known to cause inflammation, not everyone reacts the same way to these foods. Ive had some patients who felt that wheat was making their psoriasis worse. Another patient noticed more flare-ups when she ate nuts, says Wesdock.

Some tests can measure inflammation with biomarkers, which are substances in your blood that spike when your body reacts a certain way to foods such as fats or sugar. For example, a simple test can check for increased levels of C-reactive protein in your blood. The liver makes extra CRP if theres inflammation in your body. Doctors might use this test to determine how likely you are to develop a chronic condition like heart disease.

As you adjust your diet to ease psoriasis symptoms, be sure to work with your psoriasis doctor to monitor symptoms and inflammation levels.

Studies Have Found A Link Between Vitamin D Deficiency And Psoriasis

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is available in a variety of foods and supplements, but your main source of vitamin D is the sun. When your skin makes contact with sunlight, it triggers the production and release of vitamin D. Vitamin D most prominently helps to maintain bone health by promoting calcium absorption in the gut and by maintaining healthy serum calcium levels, which allows for normal bone mineralization.

A lack of vitamin D plays a central role in psoriasis and other autoimmune diseases. Studies have found a link between vitamin D deficiency and psoriasis. Research found that 57.8% of patients with psoriasis were vitamin D deficient compared to just 29.7% of control patients. During the winter months, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency increased to 80.9% in psoriasis patients.1

Studies also show that regularly taking vitamin D supplements may help to promote vitamin D levels and to improve psoriasis scores. In a pilot study, nine patients with psoriasis and 16 patients with vitiligo were given a daily supplement of 35,000 IUs of vitamin D3 for six months along with a low-calcium diet and hydration. A low calcium diet was recommended for patients on the high Vitamin D treatment because high amounts of vitamin D can cause hypercalcemia .

How A Dermatologist Can Help

With so many products, it can be difficult to know what to use. If you dont see the results you like with OTC treatment for psoriasis, you may want to see dermatologist. Dermatologists are the skin disease experts. They know how to tailor psoriasis treatment to the type of psoriasis you have. Sometimes, this requires combining treatments. You may also need one treatment plan to gain control over your psoriasis and another to maintain the results.

The purpose of this quantitative study was to show high-quality evidence of the efficacy and safety of CHM for the treatment of psoriasis to promote its clinical application.

Methods: Several databases were systematically searched including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, China Network Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Scientific Journals Database, and Wan Fang Database. High-quality randomized controlled trials that compared CHM with non-CHM interventions were included. The RevMan5.3 software was used to calculate risk ratios at 95% confidence intervals and conduct the meta-analysis.

CHM appears safe and effective in the treatment of psoriasis and has a great positive impact on the DQLI of patients however, CHM could not completely eliminate skin lesions, improve pruritus severity, and reduce the recurrence rate.

Unwind With Lavender And Calendula

Not many antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agents are known for helping you relax, but thats the magic of lavender essential oil. You can also add calendula oil to the mix , along with a carrier oil, and apply directly to the scalp.

Just remember to only add a few drops of essential oil to each tablespoon of carrier oil you use, and do a patch test first to make sure you dont have a sensitivity to those particular oils.

Some potential carrier oils:

  • avocado oil
  • jojoba oil

Sadly the science here is still a little lacking, so make sure to do your homework and chat with a derm before oiling up.

Another option that doesnt involve topical application: Since stress makes psoriasis flares worse, you can sit in a quiet room with dim lighting, some lavender oil in the diffuser, and just chilllll. This may not affect your psoriasis in the short term, but it could help the flare go away faster. And, bonus points for caring for your mental health.

It’s more than just a salad dressing. Put some on your head a few times a week — either full strength or mixed with water. It’s a recipe for relief when your scalp calls out “scratch me.”

Rinse it off after it dries so you won’t get an irritation. And don’t try this when your scalp is bleeding or cracked. The vinegar will make it feel like it’s burning.

Instead of buying big brands, consider the natural approach with every hair wash! Wild Naturals has a psoriasis-formulated shampoo and conditioner tailored to relieve the scales, itch, and dryness associated with it.
