Is Psoriasis A Yeast Infection

Symptoms Of Nail Fungus

Candida And Psoriasis

While psoriasis is more commonly found on fingers, fungal infections typically occur on your toenails, and most often on a single toe unless its left untreated and spreads. If you see a single toenail involved, its much more likely its a fungal infection or trauma-related, not psoriasis, says Dr. Braue. Fungus will affect your nails differently based on the part of the nail thats infected.

What Are The Clinical Features Of Genital Psoriasis

Psoriasis of the external genitalia and perianal area often presents as well-demarcated, bright red, thin plaques. These usually lack scale, as friction between the skin surfaces rubs it off. Scales may be seen on the outer parts of the genital skin. Scales can be easily scraped off, leaving pinpoint bleeding.

In women, vulval psoriasis appears symmetrical. It can vary from silvery, scaly patches adjacent to the labia majora to moist, greyish plaques or glossy red plaques without scaling in the skin folds.

In men, the penis and scrotum may be involved. The glans penis, the bulbous part of the end of the penis, and the corona are most commonly affected. In circumcised men, plaques can be more scaly than on the rest of the genital skin. In uncircumcised men, nonscaling plaques are more common.

Psoriatic napkin eruption presents as red and sometimes silvery plaques with well-defined borders in the nappy area of children under the age of 2 years. It usually clears up after a few months to a year, but may later generalise into plaque psoriasis.

Psoriasis in genital areas can be very itchy at times. The plaques may also be fissured and painful.

Psoriasis does not lead to scarring. The skin can return to a normal appearance with treatment or spontaneously.

What Are The Causes Of Candida

Most of the time, the amount of yeast your body naturally produces is perfectly healthy. But, when your bodys pH balance gets thrown off, too much of that yeast can grow and combine with bacteria. Thats when candida occurs. Most factors that cause an overgrowth of yeast on your scalp have to do with your lifestyle.

Some of the most common causes include:

  • A weakened immune system
  • A diet high in sugar
  • Consistent use of certain medications
  • Excessive stress

All these causes can create perfect environments for the yeast to grow and thrive. For example, stress increases inflammation within our bodies. That weakens the immune system and makes it easier for an overgrowth of yeast to occur. It can grow in your GI tract, vaginally, or anywhere where your skin is moist. Eventually, though, this growth can go to the scalp and cause irritation, inflammation, and itching.

These arent the only reasons why too much yeast grows on the scalp. But, they are some of the leading culprits. If youre experiencing scalp issues and you find yourself relating to any of the above causes, the two could be related. But, it isnt enough to just assume you have an overgrowth of yeast infecting your scalp. Making sure that youre treating the right condition is essential in getting rid of it for good.

Exploring C Albicans Humoral And Cellular Responses In Psoriasis

Psoriasis and Candida: Are they linked?

Currently, the evidence of microbes presence in psoriatic patients is focused on complex DNA-based technologies. However, specific immunoglobulins assess environmental microorganism exposure and the isotypes observed in immunoglobulins can elucidate the mechanisms of antigen encounters. Initial studies of anti-Candida antibody levels did not observe differences between patients with psoriasis and healthy individuals. Recently, however, Liang YS et al. showed increased anti-whole cell antigen IgG and decreased anti-soluble antigen IgA and IgM in serum from psoriasis patients versus healthy individuals. Whilst, Sarvtin MT et al. reported decreased anti-Candida IgM, IgA and IgG levels in psoriasis patients compared to controls. As such, the humoral response against Candida albicans in psoriasis patients remains controversial.

To evaluate C. albicans exposure, we assessed fungus-specific IgA and IgG in plasmas from plaque and guttate psoriasis patients, as well as healthy controls. Significantly increased levels of anti-CA IgA and IgG were found in plaque psoriasis, with particularly higher disease severity, whereas similar antibody response was found in guttate psoriasis as to healthy controls. Importantly, active Candida infection was not observed in any subject, according to an ELISA diagnostic kit.

Ringworm Causes And Risk Factors

Ringworm is caused by a fungus. Despite its icky-sounding name, there is no worm involved. The fungus that causes ringworm thrives in warm, moist environments, and passes through skin-to-skin contact. Because of this, the condition is especially common in athletes, including those who play contact sports, swim in indoor pools, and use locker rooms.

Other risk factors for ringworm include:

  • Obesity
  • Living in a tropical climate
  • Sharing towels or shaving equipment
  • Living in communal settings like dorms

Biologics May Up Fungal Infection Risk In Patients With Psoriasis

Patients diagnosed with psoriasis who are on biologic therapy are at an increased risk of developing fungal infections, results of a report published in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology indicate.

It is already well known that certain biologics are associated with an increased risk of reactivating tuberculosis in patients with latent disease, however, with increasing use of biologic agents across indications, there has also been a rise in reports of associated deep fungal infections, explained Natanel Jourabchi, MD, of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, and colleagues.

Since the late 1990s through July 2001, only 10 cases of histoplasmosis were reported to the FDAs Adverse Events Reporting System, but as of September 2008, 240 cases involving TNF-inhibitor use among various diseases were reported, noted the investigators.

To determine the association between patients on biologic treatment and deep fungal infection, the researchers performed a literature search to identify randomized controlled trials, long-term follow-up data, and case reports for the four FDA approved biologic therapies infliximab, adalimumab, etanercept, and usekinumab used to treat moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis.

Causes Of Fungal Infection

Different types of fungi can cause fungal infections.

Dermatophytes are a common type of fungal group. You may know one of the infections that they cause by its common name, ringworm. Despite the name, ringworm is caused by a fungus, not a worm.

Fungal infections are typically superficial and can affect your hair, skin, nails, or anywhere you come into contact with the fungus. Theyre very contagious and usually picked up from direct contact with any of the following:

  • another person who has a fungal infection
  • public pools or bathrooms
  • an animal that has a fungal infection
  • unwashed floors, clothes, or childrens toys

Because fungus spreads from contact, people who walk around barefoot are more likely to pick up a fungal infection on their feet.

Candida Overgrowth And Hair Loss

Psoriasis Yeast Infections Sleep Issues Migraines Bunions Plantar Fasciitis – Dr Peter Glidden

Besides the symptoms listed above, candida overgrowth can contribute to hair loss. A scalp fungus like this can be mistaken for other things, including dandruff or psoriasis. But, it can be much more severe because it can cause hair loss in a couple of different ways.

First, too much yeast on the scalp will cause it to become itchy. Unfortunately, the more you scratch at your scalp, the higher your risk of hair loss. You could be breaking and pulling hairs out each time you scratch at your skin. If you damage your skin, the hair follicles could become clogged with dirt and debris, making it even harder for new hair to grow.

A fungus can also cause hair loss in more significant patches. It can cause the fibers of your hair to break off, falling out easier than they usually would.

Finally, Candida can affect the bodys hormones if it is systemic. When your hormones are out of whack, it can cause hypothyroidism. This can lead to lower blood circulation throughout the body. This includes circulation to your scalp and hair follicles. Sometimes, thyroid medication is needed in extreme cases of candida to balance things out. If your hair follicles arent getting enough blood flow, they cant work correctly. Not only can it cause you to lose hair, but it can prevent new, healthy hair from growing.

Symptoms Of Nail Psoriasis

In virtually every case of nail psoriasis, someone will show other signs of psoriasis somewhere else on their body because its a full-body inflammatory disease. About 5% of people have nail psoriasis alone, meaning they dont have psoriatic arthritis or skin psoriasis, says dermatologist Jonathan Braue, MD. If you see somebody with pretty typical plaque psoriasis, or they have a history of plaque psoriasis, and most of the nail changes theyre having are on the fingernails, then its a slam dunk.

Ways To Avoid Irritating Genital Psoriasis

To get the best results from treatment and avoid flares, you want to avoid irritating genital psoriasis. The following can help you do just that:

  • When treating genital psoriasis, use the treatment that your dermatologist prescribed for this area. Psoriasis treatment that youre using on another part of your body can be harmful in the genital area. Tazarotene can irritate the area, making genital psoriasis worse. Any type of phototherapy can increase your risk of developing genital cancer. Strong coal tar therapy may also increase the risk of genital cancer.

  • Tell your dermatologist if the treatment irritates any skin in your genital area.

  • Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. When bathing, you want to avoid deodorant or antibacterial soaps and body washes. These can irritate the delicate skin, causing genital psoriasis to flare.

  • Moisturize. Gently applying a fragrance-free moisturizer to the psoriasis after bathing and when the area feels dry can reduce chaffing and irritation.

  • Use quality toilet paper. This can help reduce irritation.

  • Avoid getting urine or feces on genital psoriasis. These can cause psoriasis to flare.

  • Wear loose-fitting underwear and clothing. Tight-fitting clothing can cause friction, which can worsen genital psoriasis.

  • Get plenty of fiber in your diet. Eating a high-fiber diet or taking a fiber supplement will ease bowel movements.

How To Be Intimate When You Have Genital Psoriasis

If you have genital psoriasis, you can still be intimate. Following this advice can help reduce irritation:

    • When the skin on or around your genitals is raw, postpone sex.

    • Before sex, gently cleanse the area. Be sure to use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. Cleansing will also help prevent psoriasis medication from rubbing onto your partner.

    • Men: Use a lubricated condom. Whether a man or woman has genital psoriasis, this lessens the risk of irritating the inflamed area.

    • After sex, gently wash the area. This helps reduce irritation. If you are using medicine, apply it.

    What Is Genital Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a common, long-term scaly skin condition that affects approximately 2% of the population. Genital psoriasis affects the genital skin, which includes the pubic area, vulva or penis, skin folds including natal cleft, and buttocks. It is known as anogenital psoriasis when psoriasis also affects perianal skin. Psoriasis does not affect mucosal surfaces.

Psoriasis is one of the most common diseases affecting anogenital skin. It can be part of more generalisedplaque psoriasis, but it may also be the only affected area in 25% of cases. Rarely, generalised and localisedpustular psoriasis can also affect the genital skin.

Genital skin can also be affected in inverse or flexural psoriasis, psoriasis that mainly affects the skin folds. Genital psoriasis may be associated with considerable discomfort and embarrassment, and may severely impair the quality of life and sexual well-being of those affected.

    Implications For Sexual Health

Genital psoriasis can get worse as a result of the friction associated with sexual intercourse. Using a condom might help reduce potential discomfort. It also forms a barrier, preventing skin-to-skin and fluid-to-skin contact and further reducing irritation.

After intercourse, people with genital psoriasis should thoroughly cleanse the area and reapply any medications to assist recovery.

Genital psoriasis may cause the area to look different, and the person may experience some discomfort during sexual intercourse. For this reason, people with genital psoriasis should consider communicating with their partner about the condition openly.

Although sexual intercourse can cause irritation, genital psoriasis is not transmissible and should not interfere with sexual activity.

What Toxins Does Candida Overgrowth Produce

    Is Psoriasis Candida

Candida overgrowth produces toxic byproducts over 79+ different mycotoxins. These mycotoxins attack the body and weaken the immune system. These toxins include:

    • Acetaldehyde in excess, can cause brain fog and vertigo, create a thiamine and niacin deficiency leading to depression, fatigue, memory loss and more
    • Gliotoxin deactivates critical enzymes that remove toxins and creates DNA changes in white blood cells that weaken the immune system

Note: To be clear, this list is not meant to indicate that these conditions are caused solely by candida overgrowth. Many of them have a genetic component. That said, there is often an epigenetic component as well.

Most of us know that not everyone who has a gene that has been linked to a disease gets that disease. Something has to trigger that gene to become active.
