Laser Treatment For Scalp Psoriasis

Scalp Psoriasis: Signs And Symptoms

Psoriasis Laser

Psoriasis can appear anywhere on the scalp. Sometimes a small patch develops, which can be easy to hide with hair. Scalp psoriasis also can cover the entire scalp. When psoriasis appears on the scalp, you may notice:

  • Reddish patches on the scalp. Some patches are barely noticeable. Patches also can be very noticeable, thick, and inflamed.
  • Dandruff-like flaking and silvery-white scale. Scalp psoriasis can look a lot like dandruff. Many people who have scalp psoriasis see flaking. But there are differences between scalp psoriasis and dandruff. Unlike dandruff, scalp psoriasis causes a silvery sheen and dry scale on the scalp.
  • Dry scalp. The scalp may be so dry that the skin cracks and bleeds.
  • Itching. This is one of the most common symptoms. For some the itch is mild others have intense itching that can interfere with everyday life and cause sleepless nights.
  • Bleeding. Because scalp psoriasis can be very itchy, almost everyone scratches. Scratching can make the scalp bleed. Scratching also tends to worsen the psoriasis. Scratching can make the patches larger and thicker. This is why dermatologists tell their patients, Try not to scratch your scalp.
  • Burning sensation or soreness. The scalp can burn. It can feel extremely sore.
  • Temporary hair loss. Scratching the scalp or using force to remove the scale can cause hair loss. Once the scalp psoriasis clears, hair usually regrows.

Psoriasis Types Causes & Triggers

Psoriasis is a chronic disease of the immune system that triggers skin cells to grow too quickly causing itchy skin spots, red patches, and thick flaky lesions. Many people who have psoriasis will suffer this medical condition for life. It is possible to see clearer skin by learning more about psoriasis and seeing a dermatologist regularly for treatment.

Despite its appearance, psoriasis is not contagious. People who get psoriasis tend to have a blood relative who has psoriasis, indicating a genetic link. For psoriasis to appear, a person must inherit the right mix of genes and be exposed to a trigger.

Common triggers can be stress, strep throat, and winter weather. Many people see their psoriasis flare up during the winter or a particularly stressful time. A scratch or bad sunburn can also be a trigger. For some people, psoriasis flares about 10 to 14 days after they injure their skin. Some medications can trigger psoriasis, including lithium, blood pressure medications, and some medications taken to prevent malaria.

How Does It Work

Doctors have known for a long time that UVB rays from the sun can help with psoriasis patches. But they do damage skin.

In people with psoriasis, the thinking is that UVB light helps by damaging immune cells near the surface of the skin. Those immune cells cause the reaction that leads to psoriasis plaques. So damaging them can make the red spots get better or even go away. Because of the risks of using damaging UVB light, a doctor needs to closely oversee the treatment.

Doctors sometimes recommend UVB light boxes for psoriasis. These are medical-grade boxes that you stand in while UVB light is cast over your body. Itâs a good option for people who have patches over a lot of their body.

If someone has only a few isolated patches of psoriasis, excimer laser therapy can target their UVB treatment. This FDA-approved method uses a mixture of gases to make a controlled beam of UVB light. Doctors can direct the light only to psoriasis patches without hitting healthy skin. Because this method targets small areas, itâs best for people who have a limited number of red patches or plaques.

Your doctor will recommend the right treatment course for you. Each treatment takes only a few minutes, but youâll need several. You might have to go one to three times a week for several weeks or even a few months. The amount of UVB youâll get at each session depends on your skin type and how it reacts to the treatment. People with darker skin need higher doses than people with fair skin.

How Long Has Red Light Therapy Been Around

Scientists at National Aeronautics and Space Administration and Quantum Devices, Inc. first discovered red light as a way to grow plants in space back in the early 1990s. Red LEDs produce light thats 10 times brighter than the suns rays. They also learned that this intense light helps energy metabolism in plant cells and promotes growth and photosynthesis.

From 1995 to 1998, the Marshall Space Flight Center challenged QDI to study red light for its potential application in medicine. In other words, they wanted to see if the red light that energized plant cells would work the same way on human cells.

The primary focus of this research was to determine if RLT might affect certain conditions that impact astronauts. Specifically, the scientists wanted to see if RLT could help with muscle atrophy and bone density issues that arise from long periods of weightlessness. Wounds also heal slowly in space, so that was another key focus area of their studies.

Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology examined the effects of RLT versus blue light therapy for individuals with psoriasis. Participants had high-dose treatments three times per week for four consecutive weeks while applying a 10 percent salicylic acid solution to plaques.

Its important to remember that these treatments were done with high doses in a medical setting. The results may vary greatly if the therapy is performed at home or a salon or wellness center.

Psoralen Plus Ultraviolet A

For this treatment, you’ll first be given a tablet containing compounds called psoralens, or psoralen may be applied directly to the skin. This makes your skin more sensitive to light.

Your skin is then exposed to a wavelength of light called ultraviolet A . This light penetrates your skin more deeply than ultraviolet B light.

This treatment may be used if you have severe psoriasis that has not responded to other treatment.

Side effects include nausea, headaches, burning and itchiness. You may need to wear special glasses for 24 hours after taking the tablet to prevent the development of cataracts.

Long-term use of this treatment is not encouraged, as it can increase your risk of developing skin cancer.

When Will I See Improvement

Many people who use light therapy for psoriasis see improvement, but not right away. Youâll need to have several sessions before you notice a change.

After the treatment, your skin might stay clear for a while, even several months. But laser therapy canât cure psoriasis. It treats plaques you already have. Over time, the spots are likely to come back. Youâll need a new treatment cycle to target them again.

Treatment You Receive At A Dermatologists Office Or Clinic

If the psoriasis fails to clear with treatment applied to the scalp or you have thick psoriasis on your scalp, your dermatologist may recommend the following.

Injections of corticosteroids: Your dermatologist can inject a corticosteroid directly into the scalp psoriasis. While this can be effective, its use is limited to a few times.

Excimer laser and other light treatments: This laser can treat psoriasis in difficult-to-treat areas like the scalp, feet, and hands. When used to treat the scalp, your dermatologist may use a device that looks like a blow dryer. A benefit of using this to treat scalp psoriasis is that this laser treats only the areas that need it.

The drawback to this treatment is that you will need to travel to your dermatologists office or a psoriasis clinic two or three times per week. Each treatment session takes about 10 minutes. Most patients need to continue these visits for several weeks. If your schedule wont permit this, be sure to tell your dermatologist.

While getting these treatments, you may also need to use another treatment at home.

Excimer laser treatment is usually painless, but possible side effects include redness and sunburn-like pain.

What The Research Says

One 2002 study reported that 72 percent of participants experienced at least a 75 percent clearing of psoriasis plaques in an average of 6.2 treatments. About 50 percent of participants had at least 90 percent of their plaques clear after 10 or fewer treatments.

Although XTRAC therapy has been shown to be safe, more long-term studies are necessary to fully assess any short- or long-term effects.

Ask your doctor about ways to speed your healing. Some people find that putting mineral oil on their psoriasis before treatments or using topical medications along with the XTRAC laser can help the healing process.

Medicine You Apply To The Scalp

Laser treatment for psoriasis

This is the most commonly prescribed treatment. Your plan may include one or more of the following medicines.

Corticosteroids: This is the #1-prescribed treatment for scalp psoriasis in children and adults. Corticosteroids work quickly to reduce redness, swelling, itch, and scale. This makes it more effective than any other treatment that you apply to the scalp.

When used as directed, this medicine is safe. Because side effects can occur with long-term use, your dermatologist may recommend another treatment to use with the corticosteroid. This reduces possible side effects.

Medicated shampoos: This is often part of a treatment plan.

If you have stubborn scalp psoriasis, your dermatologist may prescribe a shampoo that contains clobetasol propionate. This can be quite effective when used in a shampoo. Studies show that patients can safely use this shampoo every day for up to four weeks. Its also safe to use it once or twice a week to maintain results.

Gently shampoo

Rubbing, scrubbing, and scratching your scalp can worsen existing psoriasis.

Scale softeners: If the psoriasis on your scalp is thick, it can be hard for the treatment you apply to work. A product that contains salicylic acid can soften thick, stubborn patches. Other ingredients can also help.

Tip for applying medicine

Lift your hair up and away when applying medicine to your scalp.
