    What Is The Treatment

There are many treatment options that can help scalp psoriasis and often a combination approach using a number of different treatments may be required until the symptoms have settled. It is important to remember to continue to treat the scalp even if hair falls out. Hair usually grows back once the inflammation and scale has cleared.

Treatments can be time-consuming and you may find them easier if you ask someone to help you. It is important to choose one that suits your lifestyle carrying out intensive treatments over the weekend, for example, when you have more free time. Psoriasis is not curable, but the signs and symptoms can be well controlled.

It can take at least eight weeks until you gain adequate control of the plaques, whichever treatment you use. Remember to try to treat psoriasis daily when it is active.

If, however, you have seen no improvement after 4 weeks continuous treatment, you should return to your doctor or nurse for further assessment.

Once you have achieved clearance, it is important to maintain the improvement. This can usually be done with regular use of a tar shampoo and or by moisturising the scalp occasionally with an oil or emollient. Some people find daily treatment of the scalp an advantage in keeping the scales from returning, but this would be a personal reference depending on your circumstances. If you have no success in controlling your scalp psoriasis, ask your GP to refer you to a specialist.

Tips For Managing Psoriasis Of The Scalp

    • Before changing psoriasis scalp medications, or trying a new hair care product, be sure to have a word with your dermatologist to avoid triggering a repeat episode.
    • When taking shower, using cool water is recommended, as temperature settings can have an impact on psoriasis of the scalp. This will also be more effective in getting the shampoo and conditioner completely out of your hair.
    • Naturally drying the hair with a towel is best, but if you must use a hair dryer, then consider using it only in the cool setting.
    • Brushes, combs, and styling tools need to be cleaned regularly to prevent a build-up of the patchy scaly deposit on your personal hair care items. When you dont clean regularly, you will end up putting the flaky dandruff back into your hair.
    • Dying hair with scalp psoriasis is not recommended. The reason for this is that dyes often contain harsh chemicals, which can have adverse effects on the sensitive scalp.
    • For people with psoriasis, hiding the problem becomes important. Therefore, use light hair colors and highlights, rather than darker colors, which will show the flakes clearly.

As you figure out what products irritate the scalp, and which ones cause your scalp psoriasis to worsen, you can get an idea of what to avoid and what to use. Dealing with hair care in psoriasis is largely trial and error. Therefore, once you get to know how to go about this, managing the condition becomes routine and simple.

What Is Psoriasis And Scalp Psoriasis Specifically

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease that speeds up skins cell turnover. Normal skin turnover takes around three to four weeks, but when you have psoriasis, this process only takes a few days. Psoriasis in general is actually very common, affecting approximately eight million people in the US.

Like many skin conditions, the causes of psoriasis arent clear cut. Psoriasis is caused by a complex interaction between genetics, the immune system, and environmental factors, said Dr Wong, adding that generally, with psoriasis, skin develops thickened, raised red plaques with a characteristic coarse, silvery scale. In darker skin tones, coloring can come across as more of a dark rose healing scab with slight exposure of pink underneath, Hill told POPSUGAR. Psoriasis can also occur on many parts of your body, including your scalp.

Scalp psoriasis specifically presents the same as explained above but obviously is most prominent on the scalp and around the hairline. The flaking in psoriasis can be very extreme and often causes a lot of embarrassment to people, Dr Wong said. Its important to note that the symptoms seen in psoriasis on the scalp are different from dandruff, despite them appearing similar to the untrained eye, which is why its important to seek medical advice and not self-diagnose.

Should I Use Medicated Scalp Psoriasis Shampoos Or Regular Shampoos

There are specially formulated psoriasis shampoos that contain ingredients to help support fast relief from itching and scaling. However, there are also non-medicated ones that will still alleviate the symptoms but in a more subtle way.

Some of the ingredients include coal tar, salicylic acid, pyrithione zinc and selenium sulfide. However, if you’re looking for over-the-counter solutions, there are certain ingredients that you should avoid because they can irritate the scalp and make a bad situation worse: alcohols – artificial fragrances and colours.

Natural shampoos tend to make great psoriasis shampoos because they are free from any harsh chemical ingredients and are more on the mild side. They might not provide as fast relief from psoriasis symptoms, but they will still be helpful in easing the psoriasis symptoms.

    3. To help safeguard the skin, the immune system release chemicals that can cause nerves to itch and blood vessels to dilate to prepare the skin for a sudden rush of immune cells

    4. When the immune cells arrive at the scene, most work to kill off the pathogens causing the distress, but a few capture some of the invaders and take them back to the heart of the immune system, where other soldier cells are produced in a way to recognize and attack the invading cells on contact

    5. Inflammation is the bodys way of opening blood vessels to allow more soldier cells to rush to the battlefield.

While this entire process is completely normal, people with psoriasis tend to overproduce these soldier cells when the body feels threatened. This overabundance of killer immune cells can actually be dangerous to the skin since they begin to attack good cells along with the bad ones.

While it is great to finally understand the impact an improperly working immune system can have on your skin and cause psoriasis more research is needed to pinpoint the exact cause for the over-firing of the cell messages. Uv Brush for Psoriasis

How We Chose The Best Shampoos For Scalp Psoriasis

To create this list, we looked mainly for products that contain salicylic acid and coal tar to target scalp psoriasis. These are two ingredients recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology Association .

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid thats often used as an exfoliant. It helps soften and break down plaques and scales for easier removal. Removing the plaques should help ease symptoms, like itching, burning, and irritation.

Coal tar is derived from black coal, and, according to the AAD, has been used to treat psoriasis for over 100 years. It helps pump the brakes to make sure the skin cells on your scalp arent growing too fast and building up. Still, coal tar can be drying and can stain.

We also included shampoos with other research-backed ingredients, like selenium sulfide.

Finally, we looked at reviews from customers with scalp psoriasis to determine the effectiveness of each one.

Why Use Natural Shampoo As A Psoriasis Shampoo

A Natural shampoo bar helps by emulsifying the oils found on your scalp into the soap and helps soothe scalp psoriasis. This will help restore moisture and keep your scalp healthier. All natural shampoos still use foaming agents that gently cleanse the scalp and hair, you might not get the lather that you are used to, however, you can be sure that your natural shampoo is working to leave your natural oils on your scalp whilst removing grease and pollution from your hair shaft. A great one is one specifically formulated for anti-dandruff like the three hills solid shampoo for dandruff.

Scalp psoriasis can be treated with a novel fiber optic delivery system that irradiates the psoriatic scalp of patients with UV-B light via an optical fiber comb. Current methods for treatment of psoriasis with light are not applicable to the scalp because hair is usually blocking the light from reaching the affected skin. Our method overcomes this problem with the use of a comb that has optical fibers to deliver light directly to the skin. We have developed a UV-B light source and a fiber optic comb for use in clinics and doctors’ offices. We will evaluate this device in a clinical setting.
