Scalp psoriasis is a common skin disorder that makes raised, reddish, often scaly patches. It can pop up as a single patch or several, and can even affect your entire scalp. It can also spread to your forehead, the back of your neck, or behind and inside your ears.
You canât catch scalp psoriasis from another person. As with other types, we donât know what causes it. Doctors believe it comes from something wrong with your immune system that causes skin cells to grow too quickly and build up into patches. You may be more likely to get scalp psoriasis if it runs in your family.
About half of the estimated 7.5 million Americans with psoriasis – which can affect any skin surface – have it on their scalp. Sometimes the scalp is the only place they have it, but thatâs uncommon.
Scalp psoriasis can be mild and almost unnoticeable. But it can also be severe, last a long time, and cause thick, crusted sores. Intense itching can affect your sleep and everyday life, and scratching a lot can lead to skin infections and hair loss.

It Often Goes Undiagnosed
Psoriasis is likely to be under- or misdiagnosed in African Americans and people with skin of color. For instance, according to Dr. Sodha, these patients are 52% less likely to report having been given a psoriasis diagnosis by a physician. There are a few reasons for this, like the fact that people of color are 40% less likely than whites to report having seen a dermatologist for care. They also report three million fewer overall out-patient visits for psoriasis, Dr. Sodha notes. And population studies of psoriasis patients show that African Americans tend to report lower income and fewer years of education, which likely affects access and utilization of healthcare, thereby delaying diagnosis, leading to disease progression and delayed initiation of treatment.
Expertsand patientsagree that this is where education and normalizing conversations about skin conditions within diverse communities will help. My hope is that dermatologists are exposed to a diverse range of skin tones when theyre trained and educated, as well as in residency,â says patient advocate Reena Ruparelia of . - Go for unscented: When choosing household items that touch your skin like soaps or laundry detergents, look for gentle, unscented types since these are less likely to cause skin irritation.

Why Black Women Specifically Can Lose Their Hair Due To This Disease
When it comes to health, hair loss issues often take the back burner, leaving sufferers to fend for themselves. It’s a problem all too familiar for many woman of African descent. Health Reporter Erin Billups has more.
Finding the right treatment for her pink, itchy, and then-balding scalp was a 15-year battle for Venee Kimpson.
“It was difficult to muster up the strength to go out every day,” she said. “People would stare at you. You felt like they knew what was going on under that turban.”
Kimpson had psoriasis that was treated incorrectly, and a condition known as Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia , found mainly in women of African descent.
Kimpson said the combination of the two diseases was severe and life-altering.
“It did impact my self-esteem, and if I’m honest with myself, I would dare say there was some sadness,” Kimpson said. “The only thing that really kept me going was my faith.”
She consulted several doctors before finding Dr. Andrew Alexis, the director of Mount Sinai’s Skin of Color Center, who was able to treat and reverse both conditions.
He says psoriasis in people with darker skin tones is often misdiagnosed or treated incorrectly.
A 2016 report out of the American Academy of Dermatology found that nearly half of the 5,500 African-American women surveyed were experiencing some form of hair loss.
Dermatologist Dina Strachan said more and more women are coming into her practice with CCCA.

Being Unaware Of The Disease
Red flag symptoms such as redness of the skin may not be present in African Americans of darker complexions. Often skin at the site of the eruption becomes darker instead of red in individuals with darker skin tones due to hyperpigmentation caused by inflammation. Areas that have healed experience hypopigmentation, or become light or white in many individuals. Differences in the appearance of scalp psoriasis in African Americans versus that of other ethnic groups can result in misdiagnosis or an inability to see the severity of the disease on the part of the sufferer until the disease has progressed considerably.
Common Types Of Psoriasis
This is the most common form, accounting for about 80 to 90% of cases.
Its symptoms are dry red skin lesions, known as plaques, covered in silver scales.
They normally appear on your elbows, knees, scalp and lower back, but can appear anywhere on your body.
The plaques can be itchy or sore, or both. In severe cases, the skin around your joints may crack and bleed.

Thankfully, there are a variety of options when it comes to treating psoriasis. You can combat the condition with topical steroids and phototherapy or with oral medications and biologics for more severe cases. Most of these medications can be self-injected, so you can safely administer them at home to treat your psoriasis without worrying about frequent trips back to the doctorâs office.
Coping with psoriasis in between treatments can be tricky since thereâs no true cure for the condition, but there are topical remedies like these soothing dermatologist-approved lotions that might provide some relief in the meantime.
The bottom line: This immune disease might be more prevalent in patients with lighter skin, but people with Black skin can also suffer from psoriasis and are more likely to have severe cases of it if they do. Lesions can look purple-gray or dark brown. If you think you may have psoriasis, check with a derm.
