Natural Cures For Psoriasis Of The Nails

Unwind With Lavender And Calendula

7 home remedies for nail psoriasis.

Not many antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agents are known for helping you relax, but thats the magic of lavender essential oil. You can also add calendula oil to the mix , along with a carrier oil, and apply directly to the scalp.

Just remember to only add a few drops of essential oil to each tablespoon of carrier oil you use, and do a patch test first to make sure you dont have a sensitivity to those particular oils.

Some potential carrier oils:

  • avocado oil
  • jojoba oil

Sadly the science here is still a little lacking, so make sure to do your homework and chat with a derm before oiling up.

Another option that doesnt involve topical application: Since stress makes psoriasis flares worse, you can sit in a quiet room with dim lighting, some lavender oil in the diffuser, and just chilllll. This may not affect your psoriasis in the short term, but it could help the flare go away faster. And, bonus points for caring for your mental health.

What Does Your Patient Need To Know At The First Visit

Patient education is important initially. There are several causes for nail dystrophy. Oftentimes, when patients present, they believe that they have onychomycosis. Therefore, it is important to counsel individuals with potential nail psoriasis and to discuss the differential diagnosis of the condition.

The presence of psoriasis on other areas of the body and the absence of fungal infection on the soles of the feet and in between the toes increases the likelihood of nail psoriasis. The most accurate test to perform is a nail clipping with subsequent periodic acidSchiff stain. It is important to remember, however, that nail psoriasis and fungal infection of the nail can coexist.

Once the diagnosis of nail psoriasis is established, it is important to review gentle care of the nails. A thorough discussion of therapeutic options is helpful. Patients also should be advised that the presence of nail psoriasis can increase the likelihood of the development of psoriatic arthritis.

Treatment Of Nail Psoriasis In Children

    HOME REMEDIES FOR NAIL PSORIASIS

Despite the common onset of psoriasis in the childhood, validated clinical data on the epidemiology and the treatment of pediatric nail psoriasis is scant. In a recent multicenter study conducted in US, 39.2% of 181 children with psoriasis were found to have nail involvement . Similar results were reported from Kuwait , although in more than half of the cases the changes, pitting being the most common, were so subtle that the children were not aware of them . Nail psoriasis was found to be more common in boys, probably related to koebnerization . There are no studies on the efficacy and safety of various treatments for nail psoriasis in children. The absence of clinical data corresponds with a lack of licensure for the pediatric use of many available treatments .

Data was available for the treatment of nail psoriasis from an epidemiologic study of pediatric psoriasis from Turkey. Thirteen children with nail psoriasis were treated with potent topical steroid ointments for onycholysis and nail bed hyperkeratosis however, the results were unsatisfactory . In a pilot study of 4 children to determine the efficacy of intralesional triamcinolone acetonide in the treatment of nail pitting in children, following a single dose, the degree of pitting was reduced by a mean of 15% in the second month and 42% in the fourth month .

Psoriasis Can Affect Both Fingernails And Toenails

Psoriasis can affect both fingernails and toenails, with half of those with psoriasis alone having some form of nail involvement. The risk increases in those with psoriatic arthritis, and it is reported that this could be as high as 4 out of 5 people seeing changes to their nails. For some unknown reason fingernails are more often involved than toenails. For many people, nail psoriasis is often mild and causes few problems.

The nails are part of the skin, so it is perhaps not surprising that a skin disease such as psoriasis can affect the nails. No one knows why some people get nail involvement and others dont. Nails grow from the nail root , which is just under the cuticle. In people who develop nail psoriasis it is involvement of the nail root that causes pitting and ridging of the nails.

Onycholysis , subungual hyperkeratosis and splinter haemorrhages are all caused by disease of the nail bed. These conditions are explained in the next section.

The nail is made of modified skin and, once it has grown, it can only be altered by filing or clipping. Treatments are usually directed at the nail bed that supports the nail or the nail folds that tuck around the edges. Soothing these tissues can result in better nail growth with fewer features of psoriasis.

Psoriasis Treatment I Home Remedies For Nail Psoriasis

Some people try to tackle symptoms with home remedies, like applying vinegar or garlic to the nails for their naturally occurring antifungal properties, but theres little evidence to support their efficacy for psoriasis.

Youll want to double check with your doctor before trying these home remedies because aside from not working, they can have unintended side effects.

The DIY option to amp up is your nail hygiene routine. Hygiene cannot prevent psoriasis, but it can help ward off accompanying infections.

Keep your nails hygienic by filing them short and moisturizing your cuticles. Avoid cleaning them with a nail brush or a sharp tool, because this can exacerbate nail separation and create more opportunity for infection.

What Are Nail Psoriasis Causes And Risk Factors

Psoriasis is not contagious. How psoriasis of the nails develops is not completely known. Nail involvement appears to result from a combination of genetic , immunologic, and environmental factors.

Psoriasis tends to run in families. About 40% of people with psoriasis have a first-degree relative who is known to have the condition. If both parents have psoriasis, a person’s risk is up to 75%. Males and females are equally likely to have psoriasis. Psoriasis can occur in people of all races.

    Give Your Nails Some Tlc

Dry nails or minor nail injuries can happen to anyone, but when you have nail psoriasis, they can trigger a flare-up.

Keep your nails short so they dont catch on anything. Wear gloves when youre cleaning or working with your hands. Stop biting your nails! Avoid cutting your cuticles or scraping the buildup under your nails.

    Glamming Up Your Nails

In the process of dealing with these symptoms, you might be tempted to give your nails a few cosmetic upgrades. Thats OK, but there are a few things to consider before heading to the salon.

Be warned! Nail salons can be a source of infection. You may be exposing your already-vulnerable nails to all sorts of fungus and bacteria.

If you do pretty up your nails, nail polish is totally fine, so go wild with the nail art if you so choose . However, artificial nails are a big no-no while youre experiencing symptoms.

And if you get a manicure, pass on having your cuticles pushed back, as this can make your symptoms worse.

    Onycholysis: French tips gone rogue

Onycholysis is a common annoyance when dealing with nail psoriasis. It happens when your nail separates from the nail bed and creates an empty space under your nail. Sometimes, that little white strip at the top of your nail that is emphasized in French manicures, will extend all the way to your cuticle.

The separation creates a space between the nail and nail bed thats vulnerable to bacteria. This can lead to a fungal infection called onychomycosis, which manifests as green patches on the nail. Its usually treated with an antifungal medication.

Activities that aggravate your nails can increase separation, so youll want to make sure youre taking it easy on them.

Natural Moisturizers Like Coconut Oil And Aloe Vera

    nail psoriasis

Seeing as psoriasis dries up the skin, including your nails, keeping affected areas well-moisturized is critical to reducing the redness scaliness. Coconut oil is excellent at moisturizing the nails and cuticles, while aloe vera can replenish and retain moisture.

Apply either of the two on your nails, cuticles, and the base of your fingernails several times a day. If using coconut oil, be sure to massage the area and rinse off after ten minutes. On the other hand, you can leave aloe vera to dry.

    Scalp Psoriasis Vs Seborrheic Dermatitis

Certain skin diseases look like psoriasis but actually fit another diagnosis. One example of this is seborrheic dermatitis, a red, itchy rash that appears most often on the scalp.

Seborrheic dermatitis seems to have roots in stress, genetic factors, a particular yeast that lives on skin, certain diagnoses or medications and cold, dry weather. Newborns, men and people with oily skin are at the highest risk of this particular form of dermatitis.

Dandruff is caused by seborrhea. Infants with the condition are often referred to as having cradle cap, as well as given an improper diagnosis of diaper rash when the redness occurs around the groin.

Like psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis most often clears and flares throughout the lifetime. If you have symptoms of these disorders, see a dermatologist for a confirmed diagnosis and treatment options. Since seborrhea is not an autoimmune disease, treatment looks different although many of the same items and supplements on my psoriasis diet are similar for those with seborrhea.

    • Indigo is a compound that provides the herb with its distinctive color in powder form, for which scientists gave it the name Indigo Naturalis. Interestingly, the individual compounds do not work by themselves.
    • Indirubin affects a molecule within the cells responsible for the growth of skin, which substantially decreases the apparition of psoriasis plaques .
    • Tryptanthrin utilizes a mechanism that affects the regulation of interleukin, a gene responsible for the moderation of skin cells. Research has demonstrated that using indigo naturalis as a treatment provides a 75% improvement of the symptoms associated with nail psoriasis and other consequences of plaque psoriasis .
