Fluocinolone Acetonide Topical Oil For Scalp Psoriasis

How Should This Medicine Be Used

Psoriasis Treatment| Medicated Oil Day 1

Fluocinolone topical comes in ointment, cream, solution, shampoo, and oil in various strengths for use on the skin or scalp. Fluocinolone ointment, cream, solution, and oil are usually applied two to four times a day. Fluocinolone shampoo is usually applied once a day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Use fluocinolone topical exactly as directed. Do not apply more or less of it or apply it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Do not apply it to other areas of your body or wrap or use it to treat other skin conditions unless directed to do so by your doctor.

Your skin condition should improve during the first 2 weeks of your treatment. Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve during this time.

To use fluocinolone topical, apply a small amount of the ointment, cream, solution, or oil to cover the affected area of skin with in a thin even film and rub it in gently.

To use the shampoo, shake the bottle well, apply a small amount of the medicine to the scalp, and use your fingers to form a lather. Leave the shampoo on your skin for 5 minutes and then rinse the shampoo out of your hair and off your body with plenty of water. Do not cover your head with a shower cap, bathing cap, or towel while the shampoo is on your scalp unless directed to do so by your doctor.

What Is Scalp Psoriasis

Scalp psoriasis is often misdiagnosed as seborrheic dermatitis. Unlike the latter condition, psoriasis is characterized by red, silvery scales that result from increased skin cell turnover. These scales may itch like dermatitis, but they can also burn.

Scalp psoriasis may start at one side of the scalp and quickly spread around your whole head. Patches and scales are often most prevalent behind the ears and at the edge of the hairline. This can make camouflaging the condition difficult.

Scalp psoriasis outbreaks are usually treated with:

  • shampoos with salicylic acid
  • topical retinoids
  • ultraviolet light, for shaved heads

The duration and effectiveness of these treatments vary. Psoriasis flare-ups can last for weeks, and even months.

Some people use a combination of therapies to manage their psoriasis. This combination may include an alternative treatment such as coconut oil.

People with more severe cases of scalp psoriasis may require biologic drugs.

  • viruses
  • harmful microbes

Coconut oil is most prominently known as a cooking aid for people looking for a healthier alternative to vegetable oil. In solid form, coconut oil is also used as a skin moisturizer. It can be used as a topical treatment for psoriasis as well.

Coconut oil alone may not be a sufficient treatment for psoriasis, but adding such a thick cream to the scalp can potentially help in the removal of scales.

Treatment Of The Body

Seborrhea of the trunk may be treated with frequent application of zinc or coal tar containing shampoos or by washing with zinc soaps. Additionally, topical ketoconazole cream, 2 percent, and/or a topical corticosteroid cream, lotion or solution applied once or twice daily will prove useful. Benzoyl peroxide washes are also helpful in controlling seborrhea of the trunk. Patients should be cautioned to rinse thoroughly after application of these agents as they will bleach clothing and bed linens. These agents may be drying, and the patient may benefit from application of a moisturizer after treatment.

How Should I Use Fluocinolone Topical

What is Fluocinolone?

Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use the medicine exactly as directed.

Do not take by mouth. Topical medicine is for use only on the skin.

Read and carefully follow any Instructions for Use provided with your medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you do not understand these instructions.

Wash your hands before and after using fluocinolone, unless you are using this medicine to treat the skin on your hands.

Apply a thin layer of medicine to the affected skin and rub it in gently. Do not apply this medicine over a large area of skin unless your doctor has told you to.

Do not cover the treated skin area with a bandage or other covering unless your doctor tells you to. Covering treated areas can increase the amount of medicine absorbed through your skin and may cause harmful effects.

Shake fluocinolone shampoo well just before each use. Apply to the scalp and work into a lather, rinsing thoroughly after 5 minutes.

    Dont Scratch That Itch

Refrain from rubbing or scrubbing your scalp when shampooing, as tempting as it may be to dig into those itchy spots. Scratching induces trauma which in turn induces psoriasis, a process known as Koebnerization, Bagel explains.

If youre finding it hard not to scratch, try applying a dab of hydrocortisone, a mild corticosteroid, to itchy spots, to help decrease itching and inflammation, the NPF says. Start with the least powerful topical steroid that works for you, and use it just three to four times a week.

Treatment Of Scalp And Beard Areas

Many cases of seborrheic dermatitis are effectively treated by shampooing daily or every other day with antidandruff shampoos containing 2.5 percent selenium sulfide or 1 to 2 percent pyrithione zinc. Alternatively, ketoconazole shampoo may be used.10 The shampoo should be applied to the scalp and beard areas and left in place for five to 10 minutes before rinsing. A moisturizing shampoo may be used afterward to prevent dessication of the hair. After the disease is under control, the frequency of shampooing with medicated shampoos may be decreased to twice weekly or as needed. Topical terbinafine solution, 1 percent, has also been shown to be effective in the treatment of scalp seborrhea.11

If the scalp is covered with diffuse, dense scale, the scale may first be removed by applying warm mineral oil or olive oil to the scalp and washing several hours later with a detergent such as a dishwashing liquid or a tar shampoo.12 An alternative is an overnight application of a coal tarkeratolytic combination or phenol-saline solution with or without occlusion with a plastic shower cap followed by shampooing in the morning.13

Infants frequently have seborrheic dermatitis, commonly known as cradle cap. Areas of possible involvement include the scalp, face and intertriginous areas. Involvement may be extensive, but this disorder frequently clears spontaneously by six to 12 months of age and does not recur until the onset of puberty.

Tips For Treating Scalp Psoriasis With Coconut Oil

Its best to apply the oil after showering. This is when your skin is most capable of trapping in moisture. Leave the oil on for about a half an hour.

To increase the benefits, wrap a warm towel around your head. You can warm up towels several different ways:

    • run a washcloth under hot water in your sink
    • put a damp towel on a plate and microwave for 30 seconds
    • heat water in a tea kettle and pour the water on a towel in a bowl

When you rinse the coconut oil off of your scalp and out of your hair, massage your scalp with your hands. Its important to do this gently. Ripping off scales can cause skin irritation and lead to infections.

After youve finished rinsing, run a comb through your hair. This will help remove any scales caught in your hair.

This method can give you temporary relief from excessive dandruff. Without other forms of treatment, the scales will likely come back.
