Is The Tanning Bed Good For Psoriasis

Characteristics Of Indoor Tanning Light

Psoriasis: Tanning and Exercise

The light used during indoor tanning is poorly defined. The US Food and Drug Administration does not specify limits on the power of UV light emissions, instead defining irradiance ratio limits, where the ratio of irradiance between wavelengths of 200 and 260 nm to the irradiance between wavelengths 260 and 320 nm should not exceed 0.003 at any distance and direction from the source . While in the US there are state and federal regulations, according to a study performed in North Carolina, the extent to which commercial tanning facilities comply is poor, with only 1 out of 32 commercial tanning establishments within complete compliance of state and federal guidelines .

The wavelengths of UVA and UVB irradiation from tanning beds are highly variable however, tanning beds as a whole tend to emit primarily UVA irradiation. Rates of UVB emissions range from 0.5% to 5.0% in North Carolina tanning beds . Another study of North Carolina tanning beds found a wide range of UVA irradiance, 17.7674.0 W/m2 and a UVB range of 0.120.82 W/m2 .

Psoriasis Patients Flock To Salons

Almost 19 out of 20 tanning facility owners 93 percent say that their salons have clients who tan primarily as an informal treatment for psoriasis, according to a SmartTan.com poll conducted in late February.

That finding supports several other Smart Tan surveys showing that many who follow indoor tannings cosmetic protocol are informally and inexpensively treating their psoriasis as a side-effect of their cosmetic tan.

  • A 2010 Smart Tan survey of 6,881 indoor tanning clients revealed that 11 percent of tanning clients say a doctor referred them to a tanning salon for therapeutic reasons and that 28 percent of those referring physicians were dermatologists. The survey shows that the recent press release from the American Academy of Dermatology in which the organization contended that 100 percent of dermatologists discourage tanning is baseless.
  • In a 2009 SmartTan.com poll 67 percent of salons reported having dermatologists in their communities who are in favor of moderate UV exposure as long as tanners avoid sunburn.

Based on the 2010 consumer survey, dermatologists refer an estimated 900,000 people to sunbeds in the United States every year. Two of my doctors told me I needed to tan: my dermatologist for my skin psoriasis, and my regular doctor for depression from not getting enough sun lightTanning did help a lot, said Robert Van Dine, a patron at Midnight Sun & Cruise in Holland, Mich., a Smart Tan member facility.

The Right Amount Of Sun

A weekend at the beach is unlikely to clear up psoriasis, because you need long-term exposure. Too much sun, however, can cause a sunburn and result in injury and aggravation of psoriasis.

Increase your sun exposure levels slowly. That way your skin benefits from exposure to the ultraviolet light, but adapts to the effects of the sun gradually. Start with just 10 minutes at a strong, sunny point of the day, such as noon or 1pm. Gradually increase your exposure by 30-60 seconds a day.

Wear sunscreen and sunglasses to protect yourself from harmful rays that can age you and cause a burn. If you take medications or have a condition that makes you especially sensitive to the sun, clear sun therapy with Dr. Fromowitz before heading outside.

How Does Psoriasis Affect Self

Psoriasis affected areas of skin can be dry and inflamed. Applying a harsh self-tanning product to these areas can cause irritation and additional inflammation, not only is this bad for your condition and skin, but it also affects the appearance of the self-tan.

Inflamed skin, dry skin, and scaly skin will drastically affect how the self-tan turns out. The tan will be applied unevenly to the dry skin and will look streaky and patchy. The tan also will not be able to hold to the skin for long due to the constant irritation.

Self-tanning products work by reacting with dead skin cells. Psoriasis causes a build-up of skin cells. These obviously die off quickly, and applying self-tanner to this build-up of dead skin cells can cause darker patches of the tan as there are more dead skin cells to react with.

There are self-tanning products on the market that take this into account and do try help give you an even and streak-free tan, all while helping to cover up the scaly patches that psoriasis causes. Be very careful when choosing the product you use, as the wrong one could drastically worsen the condition in an affected area.

    Tanning Bed Risks

Even though the National Psoriasis Foundation does not recommend using tanning beds for psoriasis treatment, there are some dermatologists who will entertain the idea under certain circumstances. First of all, it is important to know that not all tanning beds are created equally. Many tanning beds only use UVA light however, UVB light is the only thing that will work to treat psoriasis.

It can also be difficult to manage how much exposure you are getting. When receiving phototherapy under a dermatologists supervision, the doctor is able to control exactly how much light you are receiving, as well as target the light to specific areas that are affected.

If you get sunburned from too much exposure in a tanning bed, this can actually enflame your psoriasis even more. Additionally, your risk for skin cancer will greatly increase when you use this method, as opposed to doctor-supervised phototherapy.

    Tanning Bed Safety Tips

If you do decide to try tanning beds instead of phototherapy, there are ways to do it safely if you are careful. First, ask your dermatologist about their recommendations for you using a tanning bed. Also, check with your doctor or pharmacist to make sure youre not taking any psoriasis medications that can make your skin more sensitive to light.

Here are some things to consider in order to ensure your tanning bed use will be safe and effective:

Sunbeds Can Be Healthful Devices Bymarc Sorenson Edd

Sunbeds, also known as tanning beds, have many healthful properties. They produce vitamin D, strengthen bone and reduce the risk of major cancers. Yet, sunbeds are much maligned as being a major cause of melanoma. Thus, teens in many areas have been banned from using them by misguided legislation. In addition, tanning- salon owners must live in fear of government overreach that could put them out of business.

Can You Treat Psoriasis With Sunbeds

For anyone who has suffered with Psoriasis, it can be a long and frustrating process and one which can affect every part of a sufferers life.

Many dermatologists recommend phototherapy as part of treatment for psoriasis as the exposure to ultraviolet B light can slow the growth of skin cells and clear large areas of psoriasis for up to one year.

The UVB light can be delivered by natural sunshine but many patients look for an alternative source either due to embarrassment of sunbathing in public or because of the unpredictable availability of sunlight in the U.K.

Other options are specialist laser which are costly and not every dermatology clinic has high-powered lasers. So, many people cant access clinical phototherapy because of cost, distance, or other inconvenience issues.

This has meant that although not an entirely perfect substitute for clinical lasers, sunbeds can be a low cost and effective treatment and in some cases a better alternative than long term use of medication. Psoralens should not be used with tanning beds as it may result in severe sunburn. Always consult your Doctor first.

It is important to note that The National Psoriasis Foundation does not recommend the use of indoor tanning beds as a substitute for phototherapy carried out with a prescription and under the supervision of a dermatologist.

    Psoriasis

Assessing the evidence for commercial tanning facilities as a treatment for psoriasis is important as indoor tanning is already commonly used by people as a psoriasis treatment, perhaps the most frequently used form of phototherapy for psoriasis. One center reported that more than 50% of patients presenting to their clinic had tried or were currently treating their psoriasis with commercial tanning sessions . Another survey found that 36% of patients reported having tried commercial tanning beds as a psoriasis treatment .

There may be concern that tanning beds that emit primarily UVA would not be effective for the treatment of psoriasis. While one study found that UVA doses up to 30 J/cm2 were ineffective for psoriasis, Parrish found that psoriatic plaques are responsive to erythemogenic doses of either UVA or UVB light . The ability of tanning beds to treat psoriasis was compared on the basis of their UVB output, one with a UVB output of 4.6% was compared to another with a lower UVB output in a within-patient comparison technique . There were marked and equivalent improvements in Psoriasis Area Severity Index scores from baseline in patients treated unilaterally with either lamp with 12 exposures to an equal erythemal dose over a 4-week period. While exposure to either UVA or UVB light can induce clearance of psoriatic plaques, UVA requires more energy to reach erythemogenic dosing .

    What About Tanning Beds

You may wonder if indoor tanning beds can treat psoriasis. This has been a topic of discussion among the psoriasis community. However, the benefits of tanning beds arent clear. This practice is actively discouraged by many medical groups because it carries an increased risk for skin cancer.

The NPF discourages the use of indoor tanning beds for a variety of reasons. One is that tanning beds generally emit more UVA light than UVB light. UVA light without medication, such as psoralen, is relatively ineffective at treating psoriasis.

Still, some research suggests that indoor tanning beds can help psoriasis. One study concluded that indoor tanning beds may be useful in treating dermatologic conditions for people who are unable to access light therapy prescribed and managed by a doctor. The study encourages doctors to provide guidelines for this practice, as many people try it anyway.

    Do Sunbeds Help Psoriasis

    Results Of Light Therapy

Most people who are interested in light therapy are most concerned with when theyll see results. However, light therapy has different results with every person. Depending on your skin type and severity of psoriasis, the amount of time needed for a treatment session will vary. Most people who undergo light therapy have had little improvement from other psoriasis treatment options.

Because of this, many people need repeated light therapy for several weeks to see improvement. Most people experience relief in 3-12 months and have results that last for over six months.

The Role Of Sunlight: How Can It Help Psoriasis

Most people who have psoriasis find that the sun helps to improve their skins appearance. For some the change is dramatic, with red scaly patches almost disappearing altogether during summer months in a warm climate.

In order to help clear psoriasis, sun exposure needs to be spread over time. A week on a sunny holiday may help but rarely completely clears psoriasis, and if the skin is exposed too soon for too long, sunburn can result, which could cause injury to the skin. In some people with psoriasis such injury can start a new plaque of psoriasis at the site of the injury. This is known as Koebnerisation, after the German dermatologist Heinrich Koebner. Therefore it is important to increase exposure to the sun gradually, to allow your skin to adapt to the sun without burning.

Because ultraviolet light is so effective for many with psoriasis, it is often used in various artificial forms. Ultraviolet phototherapy is a highly effective set of treatments for psoriasis given by hospital dermatology departments and specialist phototherapy centres. UV phototherapy is used in one of two forms: UVB or PUVA. UVB uses short-wave UVB light while PUVA uses a plant-derived photosensitiser with long-wave UVA light. If you need these treatments, your GP or healthcare provider can refer you to a dermatologist who will discuss the most suitable treatment for your psoriasis, including phototherapy.

Q: Can Phototherapy Make Psoriasis Worse

A: Phototherapy treatment, much like psoriasis, varies from patient to patient. It is possible that one patient notices his or her condition slightly worsens before it gets better, while another patient notices more immediate progress. Flare-ups are also common in the healing process, but with continued phototherapy treatment clear those too will clear up.

So its $30 a month since the $100 pkg lasts me so long. Tanning definitely helps. I put a good lotion on after I get home from going and that seems to help a lot!! I was very red yesterday, went tanning after work and applied Aveeno last night. All my spots are very faint!!
