- Use a humidifier in your home to keep the relative humidity at 30 to 50 percent.
- Lower the heat, especially at night.
- Take lukewarm showers and wash with a moisture-rich shower gel.
- Moisturize your skin well after showering and throughout the day, as needed.
- Apply sunscreen to exposed skin use a product with a sun protection factor of at least 15.

Humidity level is equivalent to relative humidity these terms are often used interchangeably. Relative humidity is an important concept to understand. Relative humidity measures the total amount of moisture in the air compared to the total amount of moisture that can be held at that particular temperature.
RH is expressed in a percentage, i.e. 40% humidity or 10% humidity. If you watch your local news weather report tomorrow morning, the meteorologist will reference humidity as such: Temperatures are on the rise and summer is finally here. We have a high today of 85 with 45% humidity and a low of 62 degrees.
Higher temperatures can hold more moisture than lower temperatures. This is why humidity levels increase during the summer months and decrease during the winter months.

There Is A Connection Between Weather And Psoriasis
Chris isn’t imagining that weather affects his psoriasis. A letter published in 2013 in Occupational and Environmental Medicine summarized the results of a study on the effect of weather and both outdoor and indoor environmental factors on the clinical course of psoriasis.
Looking at two groups, one with only psoriasis and the other with , the five authors found that “in most subjects,” the problem improved in summer and worsened in winter, mainly because of sun exposure. They did note some worsening of symptoms in a small group of patients, due to sun. They also concluded that more attention should be paid to environmental factors so that the most appropriate therapy could be chosen for patients with psoriasis.
In the September 2015 Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, the physician authors determined that may be caused by the season’s cold temperature, darkness, and low humidity, which they said can “increase skin permeability, epidermal thickening, and stimulate inflammatory mediator production,” which means an overactive immune system. Summer improvement may be attributed to the sun’s known immunomodulatory and bactericidal effects modifying the immune system’s function and also killing bacteria, they said.
Why Plaque Psoriasis Might Get Worse In The Summer

Go Heavy On The Moisturizer
Many people find their skin gets drier in winter regardless of whether they have psoriasis, Murase points out. This year, all the extra handwashing and sanitizing aimed at preventing COVID-19 can make things even worse.
The solution is to moisturize even more frequently than usual, says Murase. Choose creams that are free of chemicals, fragrances, and dyes , says the NPF. And the thicker, the better. The general rule of thumb is that if you turn the container of moisturizer over and it doesnt run out, its thick enough to moisturize, says Murase. Apply the cream liberally and often even if your psoriasis patches have cleared and you think you dont need it.
