Consultations in Dermatology: Psoriasis ear canal

This is the absolute last place people want psoriasis plaques. In fact, patches in the groin area are most likely to impact quality of life, according to a study published in the journal Psoriasis. While avoiding tight, chafe-inducing clothes helps here, you should always consider booking a derm appointment if youre dealing with an episode in this oh-so-tender zone. When psoriasis occurs in sensitive areas like the anus and genitals, its important to use a gentle combination of mild prescription steroids and non-steroids such as elidel cream, which will calm flares, says Dr. Crutchfield.

What about bathroom breaks? Susan Bard, M.D., an NYC-based board-certified dermatologist and clinical instructor at Mount Sinai Hospital, says to skip wipes , and instead, use soft toilet paper.

What Are The Symptoms Of Psoriasis Of The Ear

You might have psoriasis if you notice a consistent pain or itching on the skin around your ear. The National Psoriasis Foundation says psoriasis usually occurs in the external ear canal. Regardless of where on your ear it occurs, you may have a buildup of scales or wax, making it difficult to hear.

Your psoriasis symptoms might include:

  • small or large areas of irritated skin that wont heal
  • dry or cracked skin that bleeds
  • temporary hearing loss from blocked ears

You may also have nails with pits or ridges and joints that feel swollen or rigid, a symptom of psoriatic arthritis.

Its common for psoriasis in the ear to spread to the face. You might notice it around your eyes, mouth, and nose. A small number of people may even find psoriasis on their gums, tongue, or the inside of their cheeks and lips.

St James Area Womans Ear Itch Turns Out To Be Psoriasis

For about a year, Delores Wagner had an itch in her ear that would not go away no matter what she did.

It was just a terrible itch, Wagner recalled, adding that her itchy ear would cause her to wake up in the middle of the night. It drove me crazy.

Wagner, who is 77 and lives in the St. James, MO, area, said she tried using witch hazel and rubbing alcohol to relieve the symptoms, but the itch persisted.

She went to several doctors, including a skin specialist, trying to find an answer. I was desperate, Wagner said.

Then, one day, she looked in the phone book and called Judyann Krenning, MD, an ear, nose and throat physician with the Phelps Health Medical Group.

I had never seen her before, and I thought Id give her a shot, Wagner said.

During her appointment in December 2019, Wagner said Dr. Krenning looked in her ear. Dr. Krenning researched the issue on her computer and discovered that Wagner’s ear itch appeared to be psoriasis.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease, which is typically chronic, according to Dr. Krenning. Psoriasis causes a persons skin cells to multiply up to 10 times faster than normal, resulting in red and sometimes purple, dry, itchy, scaly skin lesions.

While psoriasis typically affects a persons scalp, elbow, knees and lower back, the condition also can be found in the ear canals sometimes.

Several creams and medications exist that treat psoriasis. Wagner said she was given some medicine and within about one week, the itch was gone.

Causes Of Psoriasis In The Ears

Psoriasis is a skin disease caused by a persons immune system attacking their own skin. Excess inflammation and activity by the immune system causes skin cells to replicate out of control. Overactive skin-cell production leads to skin buildup, which often appears as the discolored lesions covered with gray or silvery scales characteristic of psoriasis. This response can occur on skin all over the body, including the ears.

Factors that can make psoriasis worse or lead to a flare-up of ear psoriasis may include:

  • Cold weather
  • Infection

It’s Impact On Daily Life

We understand that having psoriasis can be a challenge due to both the physical and emotional symptoms it can cause. Working with a medical provider can help manage flares both in and around the ears and elsewhere on the body.

Specifically with the ear, working closely with a medical provider is important to minimize the risk for developing ear-related complications such as hearing impairment or loss.

How Soon After Treatment Will I Feel Better

With proper treatment, your ear eczema should go away after one to three weeks. However, no treatment can claim to eliminate the symptoms of ear eczema 100% of the time. You may encounter flare-ups on or in your ears for the rest of your life. Once you determine the cause of your flare-ups, you may prevent flare-ups from happening as often.

Recognize Triggers Of Flares

The best way to minimize the risk of psoriasis flares, including those that affect your ears, is to guard against the things that cause you to flare.

Common triggers include stress, injury to the skin , illness, and sometimes even the weather. You may not be able to avoid or change all of those things, but you can do your best to modify your behavior to reduce the likelihood of a flare-up.

If stress tends to cause you to flare, for instance, find a healthy way to cope with stress. Try practicing meditation or yoga, or take a time-out and listen to music.

What Are Treatment Options For Psoriasis In The Ear

No. I tried. I tried really hard. After about six weeks I gave in. I couldn’t do it. So what can we do? The best thing to do is to initiate a conversation with your dermatologist.

There are several treatment options for psoriasis in the inner ear, but as the skin is so delicate you should not take a steroid you have already been prescribed and try and shove it in your ear.

  • Topicals: You may be prescribed mild topical steroids, vitamin D agents or Calcineurin inhibitors. Be honest with your derm even if they frown at you. It’s better to deal with a frowny face now than cause more permanent hearing loss because of inappropriate use or application of topicals.
  • U.V.: This isn’t going to get into your ear canal, but if you struggle with psoriasis in the external parts of the ear and behind the ear that make it more intolerable, there are small handheld devices which may be suitable.
  • Systemic options: If psoriasis in your inner ear is causing you so much aggravation that it’s hindering your life and the topicals haven’t worked or you have more widespread psoriasis your dermatologist may refer you for more systemic therapy.

The critical thing to take away here is that there are multiple options for treating psoriasis in this location if you remember to ask your dermatologist the right questions at your next appointment.

Psoriasis in ears â Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

Amy over a year ago

Ive been suffering from psoriasis for years now and I guess Ive been lucky up until this point because it seems that psoriasis has arrived in my right ear canal. I cannot describe you how frustrating is this feeling because you are not meant to feel your ear canal constantly. Ive tried removing the flakes as well as I could, but Im afraid to do anything more because the flare up tissue is so sensitive and I dont know what damage can I cause.

All I managed to do is to put some moisturizer at the start of the flaking area, but all the other psoriasis products I have are for topical use only. And besides, I have no idea how to get them into my ear. Are there any moisturizing drops or anything that can be used in this situation?

ybanks522310520 over a year ago

Hello, Amy. I would try a remedy I have seen been successful for other people. Apple cider vinegar and glycerin may be the thing you need. This is natural and should not harm you or your sensitive skin. If you have any reservations, you can always dilute the vinegar moreso with the glycerin or a bit of water. You can buy a dropper to put the vinegar solution in your ears. You may want to warm the solution to a tepid temperature for more comfortable administration. I hope this helps you take care of your psoriasis. Has anyone else used this treatment and find it worked for you?

What Is The Difference Between Psoriasis And Ear Eczema

Psoriasis and ear eczema are two different skin conditions. They differ in where the disease appears on your body, how much it itches and how it looks.

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder, which means its a skin condition that doesnt go away. People with psoriasis have thick, discolored patches of skin covered with white or silvery scales.

Ear eczema affects the skin in, on and around your ears. Eczema also causes more intense itching than psoriasis. Many people, especially children, can get both eczema and psoriasis.

How Does Ear Eczema Affect My Body

Ear eczema affects your ears, including:

  • Your outer ears , including your ear lobes.
  • Your inner ears, including your ear canals.
  • Behind your ears.
  • The skin between your ears and your face.

Your skin may itch, change color, develop bumps, dry out or thicken.

In severe cases of ear eczema, your skin may crack or leak a thick, yellow or white fluid . You may also experience a ringing noise or hearing loss if you have a severe case of ear eczema in your ear canals.
