The Role Of Systematic Patient Education
An overarching theme of the roundtable meeting was the fundamental importance of open communication and patient education. Patients need to understand the nature of their skin condition, treatment options, therapeutic goals, and hold reasonable expectations for recovery. Todays patients often arrive at the clinic better informed and more opinionated than patients of the past, but that does not mean their understanding of their condition and its treatment is accurate, thorough, or balanced. Dermatologists must develop a systematic approach to patient education that includes information about the disease, treatment options, specific treatment algorithms, expectations about adherence, therapeutic objectives, potential side effects, and duration of therapy. One way to improve patient education is to approach it systematically with a checklist or other guided system to assure that no points are ever inadvertently omitted or overlooked. Standardizing education in a simple, straightforward system assures that patients get the information they need, even in the hectic environment of the busy dermatology clinic.

Can I Use My Typical Hair Care Products If Im Using Clobex Shampoo
Yes, possibly. While youre using Clobex shampoo, youll lather the product in your hair, and then rinse your hair until all the shampoo is removed. You dont need to use any other shampoo after youve used Clobex. But if youd like to use a non-medicated shampoo after washing with Clobex, you can do so.
However, theres no information from the manufacturer of Clobex that states whether its safe to use other hair products, such as hair spray or mousse.
If youd like to use certain hair products while youre using Clobex shampoo, talk with your doctor. They can recommend whether its safe for you to do so. But keep in mind that some products, including hairspray, may cause irritation on your scalp. And this could worsen your scalp psoriasis, which Clobex is being used to treat.

What Other Symptoms Should I Look For
Well, obviously the constant itching is a good indicator that something is wrong. And if you scratch that area too much, you will end up with more inflammation than you started with.
So for eczema, other symptoms might be:
- Dry, sensitive skin
- Oozing or crusting over the rash
- Dark colored patches of skin
As for psoriasis, there are several different types and several different sub-categories of those types, and each one goes through its own cycle of flaring up and subsiding, and even going into complete remission. Psoriasis is a bit more complex than eczema and varies from person to person. Although, each type is medically treated accordingly.
Some other symptoms you might experience with psoriasis are:
- Red patches of skin covered with silvery scales
- Small scaling spots
- Dry cracked skin that may bleed
- Itching and burning at the same time
How To Take And Store
Apply a thin layer of this medication onto affected areas and rub it in gently. Only apply it to the rash.
This particular medication should not be used for more than two weeks consecutively. Instead, itâs meant to be used short term, during acute flares of a skin rash that hasnât improved with other treatments.
Once improvement is seen, you should stop using it. It is not meant to be used as a preventative treatment.
Itâs important that you are not applying the cream more often than is prescribed, or using more medication than is recommended per dose. Doing so wonât clear up your rash any faster, but it does raise the chance of developing side effects.
Also, donât use this medication as a moisturizer. If your skin feels dry between uses, itâs OK to use a non-medicated, over-the-counter moisturizing cream.
Store clobetasol at room temperature.

Is Your Stomach to Blame?
Who would have thought that a severe psoriasis outbreak could start because of something going wrong inside of your stomach and intestines? Yet, new research developed by psoriasis expert Edgard Cayce shows a distinct link between a leaky gut and a scaly psoriatic episode. According to Cayce, the primary source of psoriasis can be found in the intestinal tract, where toxins are leached into the body. This causes the immune system to react by thickening the skin. At the same time, the skin tries to purge the toxins through its layers, which can cause scabs and sores to form.
Could Arthritis Be the Cuplrit?
The intestines arent the only link to psoriasis found by researchers arthritis seems to also contribute to it. As many as one-third of all psoriasis patients eventually develop some form of psoriatic arthritis. Unlike normal forms of arthritis, those with psoriatic arthritis do not exhibit a rheumatoid factor when their blood is tested. This indicates that the arthritic condition comes solely from either the psoriasis itself or the underlying cause of the skin affliction.
Could a Virus Be the Cause?
Arthritis has been linked to certain virus and so have other auto-immune disorders. This leads some researchers to think that psoriasis too may start with a virus, which is what kicks the immune system into overdrive.

The Link Between Psoriasis And The Immune System
No one ever really considered that the immune system had any real role in psoriasis, or its painful outbreaks. Not until a new drug Cyclosporine was offered to arthritis patients. What happened next was both surprising and unexpected. Patients who were prescribed the immune suppressing drug for their arthritis symptoms , began to report a decrease in their skin attacks. Without warning, researchers were faced with the theory that the immune system could be causing psoriasis.
It didnt take long before researchers began to figure out the mystery of psoriasis in regards to how the immune system can impact it.
The Role of the Immune System on the Skin
The immune system is responsible for standing guard and attacking any invaders which penetrate the body. Since the skins main job is to act as the bodys first defense mechanism against invasion, it is no wonder that the immune system works in close connection with each layer of the skin. Heres how it all works:
1. Immune cells patrol the entire body for dangers. Clobetasol Foam for Scalp Psoriasis

Patient Preference And Patient Empowerment
The elegance of the topical products vehicle plays a crucial role in product acceptance and, indirectly, in therapeutic success. Even an optimal product will not work if the patient discontinues it because he or she dislikes it. Dermatologists should select an effective agent and offer it in a patient-accepted vehicle. The vehicle plays two key roles: first, it can improve transdermal delivery of the active ingredient,26 and, second, it can appeal to the patient, possibly improving patient acceptance, satisfaction, and adherence. It may be helpful to set up a sampling station in the clinic where a patient may test two or three different product formulations with similar efficacy to decide which vehicle appeals to them the most. This should be a dermatologist-guided decisionmaking process in which the goal is to present the patient with therapeutically sound choices and then solicit from the patient which feels best on the skin and is logistically easier to use. The sampling station empowers the patient to participate more actively in therapy, in that the patient plays a decisive role in choosing the product.
