What Causes Psoriasis Flare Ups

What Triggers Can Cause A Psoriasis Flare

COVID-19 pandemic causing psoriasis flare-ups

The following factors can trigger psoriasis flare-ups:

  • Stress- The most common cause of psoriasis flare-ups. Trying different activities for stress management such as yoga, exercise, and meditation can control flare-ups.
  • Cold Air- The colder the outdoor temperatures, the more likely you are to experience a psoriasis flare-up. Ultraviolet light from the sun kills the overactive white blood cells that are attacking healthy skin cells and causing rapid cell growth. Light therapy may help reduce symptoms.
  • Dry Skin- Dry skin cracks and damages skin, letting psoriasis take hold. Keep your skin moisturized with high quality, fragrance-free cream or lotion.
  • Upper Respiratory Infections- See your doctor immediately if you get a cold or sore throat, which may push the immune system into overdrive and cause a psoriasis flare-up. Antibiotics will destroy any infection and lessen the stress on your immune system.
  • Beta Blockers and Lithium- Beta blockers, which are used to treat high blood pressure, have been linked to increased psoriasis flare-ups. Your doctor may be able to change your medication. Lithium, used to treat depression, also increases your chance for a flare-up.

There Are Ways To Shorten Flare

Psoriasis is a big star on TV drug ads, but this autoimmune skin disease is something most people try to keep well hidden.

“Psoriasis is among the most common skin conditions, affecting about 2% of the U.S. population, and while the condition doesn’t affect everyone the same way, the approach to treatment and prevention is often similar,” says Dr. Gideon Smith, an assistant professor of dermatology at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital.

More Than Skin Troubles

A 2017 study from the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that people with psoriasis that covers 10% of their body or more are 64% more likely than those without psoriasis to develop type 2 diabetes. “About 30% of people with psoriasis also might develop psoriatic arthritis, which causes destructive inflammation in your joints,” says dermatologist Dr. Gideon Smith. Psoriasis also may signal a higher risk for fatty liver disease and heart attacks.

Diet And Psoriasis: What’s The Connection

Can your diet help keep psoriasis under control? Maybe. An observational study published online July 25, 2018, by JAMA Dermatology found that people with psoriasis who followed a Mediterranean diet an eating pattern rich in fruits and vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fish, fruit, nuts, and extra-virgin olive oil experienced fewer severe flare-ups. This was only an association and more research is needed, but experts believe the Mediterranean diet contains many foods that have an anti-inflammatory effect in the body and may offer extra protection against psoriasis triggers.

Particularly an infection with strep bacteria. Some people have a psoriasis flare after a bout with strep throat, earache, bronchitis, tonsillitis, or a respiratory infection. This makes sense because infections go to the heart of what causes psoriasis: the immune system. Some people have a flare even without obvious symptoms of an infection, but a strep test may reveal an infection with the bug.

What Causes Psoriasis To Flare Up And Worsen

Sometimes, psoriasis flare-ups can be completely random. But they can also occur in response to specific triggers.

The severity of a flare-up varies from person to person. Thats why its helpful to find out whether youre doing anything that may cause your psoriasis to worsen. Here are nine triggers that have been linked to flares:

  • Stress. An increase in stress levels or living with ongoing, chronic stress can cause your psoriasis to flare up. Psoriasis itself can also be a source of stress.

How Is Psoriasis Treated

Most cases of psoriasis are mild. Treatment starts with skin care. This includes keeping your skin moist with creams and lotions. These are often used with other treatments including shampoos, ultraviolet light, and medicines your doctor prescribes. You may need to try different combinations of treatments to find what works for you.

Drinking Frequently Or In Excess

If you drink daily or have more than 2 drinks in a day frequently, your treatment for psoriasis may have little or no effect. Even treatment that could be effective for you may not work and youll continue to have flare-ups.

Reduce the risk of flare-ups from drinking

  • Quit drinking.

  • If you continue to drink, limit how much you drink in a day. Women should stop after 1 drink. Men should limit themselves to 2 drinks per day.

  • Be sure to tell your dermatologist if you drink alcohol. Drinking can make it risky to take some psoriasis medications like methotrexate.

Problems With The Immune System

Tips to prevent Psoriasis Flare-Ups & keep it from spreading – Dr. Chaithanya K S| Doctors’ Circle

Your immune system is your body’s defence against disease and it helps fight infection. One of the main types of cell used by the immune system is called a T-cell.

T-cells normally travel through the body to detect and fight invading germs, such as bacteria. But in people with psoriasis, they start to attack healthy skin cells by mistake.

This causes the deepest layer of skin to produce new skin cells more quickly than usual, triggering the immune system to produce more T-cells.

It’s not known what exactly causes this problem with the immune system, although certain genes and environmental triggers may play a role.

Changes In The Weather

The fall and winter months can be tough for some people with psoriasis. Lack of sunlight, along with dry, cold, weather often robs the skin of much-needed moisture, leading to a potential psoriasis flare-up, says AAD. Surprisingly, warm weather can, too, if it means spending a lot of time inside with the air conditioning running, explains AAD.

Fluctuations in temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure can prompt flares in people afflicted with psoriatic arthritis, causing painful inflammation and stiffness in their joints, according to Dr. Feinberg. “I get better weather reports than any weather station could provide because of my arthritis patients,” he says. “So, the old ‘I feel it in my joints, we’re going to have a storm coming,’ is absolutely true.”

Research on alcohol and psoriasis is limited. However, existing studies suggest that alcohol acts as a trigger for many people, particularly women.

In a large published in 2010, researchers observed an increase in psoriasis onset in women who drank non-light beer as opposed to other alcoholic beverages. The increase was associated with five beers per week.

The researchers hypothesized that starch in the beer may have contributed to the development of psoriasis.

Keep Your Skin Moist And Cool

According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, moisturizing your skin with heavy, fragrance-free creams or lotions helps lock in moisture so that your plaques can heal. Moisturizing every day also helps keep your skin healthy between flare-ups.

You can use body creams, facial creams, or high-quality oils, such as coconut oil, to moisturize your skin and lock in water. Other tips include:

  • Take cool to lukewarm showers of no more than 10 minutes.
  • Limit lukewarm baths to 15 minutes.
  • Add Epsom salts, sea salts, oatmeal poultices, or essential oils to bath water.
  • Pat dry but not too dry after bathing, and apply moisturizer immediately.
  • Moisturize your hands after every time you wash them.
  • Use gentle, moisturizing, fragrance-free cleansers on face and body.
  • Keep room air moist with a humidifier.

You can also refrigerate your cleansers and moisturizers for extra cooling relief.

Clinicians Must Be Ready To Treat Such Flares Which Are Inevitable

While psoriasis is by definition a chronic disease, it can be successfully controlled for long periods of time.

One way of looking at how well a patientâs psoriasis is controlled is to see how it is affecting a patientâs quality of life, said Laura K. Ferris, MD, PhD, of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The disease can be considered to be well controlled âif itâs not interfering with your life anymore, and youâre not uncomfortable in terms of pain or sleep, and youâre satisfied with your treatment,â she said.

But there are also objective measures. For example, the National Psoriasis Foundation has established a treatment strategy called âtreat to targetâ under which âwell-controlled psoriasisâ would mean clear or almost clear skin â the presence of psoriasis on 1% or less of the body â within 3 months of the start of treatment.

But no matter how well controlled the disease is, a patient is likely to experience exacerbations or âflaresâ at some point. âItâs the nature of the disease,â said Ferris.

And while the disease can get worse or better on its own, it can be susceptible to certain triggers, such as stress. âItâs one of the biggest ones we see,â said Ferris. âIf my patients are under a lot of emotional stress, or family stress, or stress at work, their skin will definitely get worse.â

Menter pointed out that some medications are also known to act as triggers, such as beta blockers and lithium.
