Two More Pieces Of Research That Are Positive For Tanning Beds
Although I occasionally try to balance the messages about tanning beds, this blog is meant neither to discourage nor promote their use. The readers should make up their minds after weighing the evidence. In a recent blog, I mentioned some positive messages about tanning-bed use, which included the following: Note: all references for the following list are found in the blog under footnote 1.
After I posted the above information, a friend from Canada reminded me of research by Dr. Pelle Lindqvist and his colleagues, which demonstrated that both sun exposure and tanning-bed exposure reduced the risk of death during a 20-year study. Women who used tanning beds were 23% less likely to die of any cause than women who did not use them.
In addition, I remembered an older study that showed that tanning beds were able to take winter vitamin D levels up to summer levels in a period of five weeks.
Before Getting In The Water
- Moisturize: Applying a thin layer of moisturizer or petroleum jelly can protect against harsh chemicals.
- Apply sunscreen: Anyone swimming outdoors may have a risk of sunburn, which can trigger a psoriasis flare.
- Choose products carefully: A broad-spectrum, waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 is best for people doing water activities. For a moisturizer, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends a fragrance-free product, preferably a thick cream or ointment.

Turning To The Internet
So, like any paranoid bride-to-be, I hit the internet just to make sure my doctor was correct. Makes sense, right? Heres the thing, if you ask the internet about psoriasis and spray tanning, you get inundated with a wide variety of answers.
Posts from beauty blogs and magazines will contradict one another while quoting dermatology experts. Psoriasis patient boards will have horror and success stories alike posted.
I felt my doctors advice was practical. The night before heading south to our wedding destination, I used a special cleansing soap that acts as an exfoliator. I started using it in the summer when keratosis pilaris was changing the texture of the skin on my upper arms.

Skin Safety In The Sun
Sometimes people with psoriasis are slightly embarrassed by their condition and face a dilemma during summer months. They have heard that the sun is good for their condition, yet they hesitate to reveal any more of their skin than they have to.
You arent alone if you wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, even on the hottest summer days, and never sunbathe on the beach or venture into the water. However, this may mean that you miss out on a lot of fun during the summer. Most people feel they look their best in the summer, and when you feel good, you look good too. Often, the more self-conscious you are about your psoriasis, the more upset it might make you, which can cause stress that may actually worsen your symptoms!
So if your skin might benefit from sunlight, it could well be worth letting it be safely exposed to the sun. Whether you will be helped by sunlight real or artificial depends on many factors, such as the type of psoriasis, your age, and the various forms of treatment you may have tried. You should first get advice from your doctor and dermatologist about whether you should try sunlight.
You are at the highest risk of sunburn if you are fair or red-haired and your skin does not tan easily. Certain medications, such as antibiotics and retinoids , may also increase the risk of sunburn.

How Effective Is Light Therapy For Psoriasis
Kaffenberger says that in her experience treating patients with moderate psoriasis, at least 75 percent of patients improve with light therapy. While it may not result in entirely clear skin in all cases, she says its a safe and effective way of making a marked improvement in most cases.
Gelfand agrees that light therapy can be highly effective, and may rival systemic biologic drugs in terms of skin clearance for some patients. Randomized control trials have shown that approximately 70 percent of patients will get clear or almost clear of their psoriasis on phototherapy. In a 2012 study he conducted, Gelfand compared phototherapy to autoimmune and biologic medications in 713 people with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis and found that patients receiving phototherapy had virtually the same results in terms of skin clearance as patients taking methotrexate, a common autoimmune medication that can cause difficult side effects for some patients.
In some cases, a combination of biologics and phototherapy can lead to excellent results. Although light therapy is not a cure for psoriasis , it can send symptoms into remission and leave your skin much clearer after a period of treatment.
How To Apply Sunscreen To Skin With Psoriasis Plaques
If you have very active psoriasis, rubbing lotions or creams into your skin can be tricky. Markowitz recommends applying Aquaphor beforehand because it can make sunscreen go on more smoothly.
Apply sunscreen gently by patting it on, rather than rubbing, Engelman suggests. If you are especially concerned about your symptoms, spray sunscreen is a contact-free option just be sure to apply very liberally, as you need to use much more than you think in order to reach the SPF protection on the bottle.
Be sure to reapply every two hours and right after breaking a sweat or getting your skin wet, she adds.

Tanning Beds And Sunlight As Treatments For Skin Disease
Some common-sense scientists understand that UV light is nearly 100% effective for many dermatological conditions, and that tanning beds are very convenient sources of UV for patients who cannot otherwise afford the rigorous travel and time commitments necessary to visit the dermatologist. Their investigation involved an arduous search for scientific papers that reported on tanning beds and their salutary affects on different skin diseases.

If youre concerned about the potential hazards of tanning beds, one helpful alternative is a home UVB light machine. Your doctor may be able to recommend one and give you tips on how best to use it.
In a time and financial pinch? Short but regular doses of plain old sunlight over the course of several weeks may also help. The National Psoriasis Foundation suggests starting with just 5 to 10 minutes of sun exposure every day around noon, gradually increasing your exposure time by half a minute as long as you dont burn. Still, check in first with your doctor to see whether any medications could make you more susceptible to sunburn. Once you have your doctor’s go-ahead, protect any unaffected areas with a strong sunscreen before heading out in the noonday sun.

What Is Ultraviolet Light
The energy in sunlight ranges in wavelength from about 2500nm down to 280nm. Visible light lies between about 400nm in the violet to 700nm in the deep red. Beyond 700nm is infrared, which is felt as heat. Infrared is strongly absorbed by water, so when clouds pass in front of the sun we immediately feel the reduction in warmth. Wavelengths shorter than 400nm are ultraviolet: our atmosphere protects us from wavelengths shorter than 280nm, so we are exposed to ultraviolet wavelengths from 280- 400nm. This region of sunlight is arbitrarily split into long-wave ultraviolet A from 315nm 400nm, and short-wave ultraviolet B from 280-315nm.
On its own, UVA is not effective in improving psoriasis, which is why psoralen is used to sensitise the skin before exposure to UVA. However, UVB is very effective at improving psoriasis, providing that the plaques are not too thick or reflective. So, sunlight can help psoriasis by virtue of the UVB wavelengths it contains. The UVB wavelengths in sunlight are also very effective at causing the production of vitamin D in the skin. Vitamin D is essential for bone and skin health. If Its So Effective Why Isn’t Phototherapy Used More
Although phototherapy is considered a first-line treatment for psoriasis, patients and dermatologists alike report that it is often impractical.
Convenience is a factor, since patients need to visit their doctors office several times a week during business hours. But it can also be expensive for each treatment, most insurance companies charge an office-visit co-pay, which tends to be higher than drug co-pays.

Can You Go In The Sun With Shingles
Shingles is a miserable condition. The painful, blistered rash can throw a monkey wrench of discomfort into your normal day-to-day routines .
But what about spending time outdoors? Is it OK to go in the sun if you have shingles? The answer is yes and no.
Being out briefly in the sunshine while, say, running errands wont harm you. But something like a day at the beach? Not a good idea.
You should avoid prolonged sun exposure if you have shingles because:
- The area of skin affected by the shingles rash is already tender and fragile, so excessive ultraviolet radiation exposure, such as sunshine, can further damage that skin.
- The rash cannot tolerate sunscreen, so youd not be able to protect it from the suns UV rays.
- Sunshine can trigger an episode of shingles, so youre vulnerable to another round of it if you get out in the sun too quickly after the blisters dry up.
- You shouldnt be exposing the rash to open air, anyway, while youre in public always keep a shingles rash covered when youre out and about to avoid spreading the virus to people who have never had chickenpox .
All that said, some sun exposure may be unavoidable when you have shingles. You should simply do your best to minimize it. Keep the rash covered with clothing or with loosely applied gauze bandages when you go out. When walking or sitting outdoors, stay in shaded areas or use an umbrella to shade yourself.
