Is Silver Sulfadiazine Cream Good For Psoriasis

What Do The Position Documents And Clinical Guidelines Say

Silver Sulfadiazine cream | Silverex Ointment Uses | Price, Dosage and Side effects @Health Rank

As we have just seen, although the available studies are few, small in size, and heterogeneous in design, most show the absence of differences or even superiority of other treatments over silver sulfadiazine for superficial burns, in terms of infection and complete healing.9However, if we do a quick search for position documents and clinical practice guidelines, we will find the widespread recommendation for the use of silver sulfadiazine cream in split- thickness burns. In the guideline published by the Japanese Burn Society in 2016,10 as well as in other clinical guidelines, it is underlined that its recommendation for use is made despite the absence of a good level of evidence.

Side Effects Are Rare

A lot of people are wary of using steroids, and afraid of side effects such as the skin becoming thinner. But this rarely happens when steroids are used for a limited amount of time only. Studies found that 1 to 2 out of 100 peoples skin became thinner following treatment with topical corticosteroids, particularly ultra-high-potency corticosteroids. Nobody stopped their treatment due to side effects, though.

Some people are worried about serious side effects such as metabolic disorders or high blood pressure. As a result, they dont use their corticosteroid cream or ointment for long enough, or they apply too little. But the risk of topical corticosteroids causing serious side effects is extremely small if they are used properly.

How Should I Use Silvadene

Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not use Silvadene in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

Wash your hands before and after applying silver sulfadiazine cream.

The person applying silver sulfadiazine to burn wounds should wear sterile disposable gloves. Take care to keep the treatment area as clean as possible to prevent further infection.

Clean the area to be treated as directed by your doctor. Apply enough silver sulfadiazine to cover the affected area evenly. This medicine should be applied in a layer about one 16th of an inch thick, or 1.6 millimeters.

If needed, apply more cream to replace any medicine that has come off on bandages, clothing, or bed linens. Reapply the cream after bathing or water therapy.

Silver sulfadiazine cream is usually applied 1 or 2 times daily. Burn wounds must be kept covered with this medicine at all times. Treated skin areas can be left uncovered, or you may use a gauze bandage if directed by your doctor.

While using Silvadene, you may need frequent blood tests. Your kidney function may also need to be tested.

Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses may also increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Treating Sickness And Conditions

Colloidal silver is antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiviral which means it can help fight off common bacterias and viruses responsible for sinus infections, pink eye, ear infections, pneumonia, shingles, and a host of other ailments. The great thing about using colloidal silver is that it doesnt create any resistance to bacterias like overuse of antibiotics can, so bacteria will always respond to this natural antibiotic. The use of colloidal silver can both prevent, and control infections when used appropriately. Be sure to check with your doctor before ingesting silver and to be sure you are using it in the correct dosage and application.

Calcineurin Inhibitors: Pimecrolimus And Tacrolimus

If psoriasis affects sensitive areas of skin for instance on your face, in your groin area or your armpits calcineurin inhibitors are sometimes used as an alternative to corticosteroids. This group of medications includes creams and ointments containing pimecrolimus and tacrolimus. Tacrolimus is the stronger of the two drugs.

Unlike steroids, calcineurin inhibitors dont make your skin thinner. But they were originally developed for the treatment of and havent been approved for the treatment of psoriasis. So certain things have to be taken into consideration if they are used for the treatment of psoriasis. For instance, its important to contact your health insurer before starting the treatment in order to find out whether they will cover the costs.

Also, theres a lack of good-quality research on the effectiveness of calcineurin inhibitors in the treatment of psoriasis, so its difficult to say whether they work as well as corticosteroids do.

How Do You Pick The Best Treatment Option

Once you are diagnosed with psoriasis, your healthcare provider will help you decide the best treatment for you. Your primary care provider can usually treat mild psoriasis. In some cases, you might need to see a specialist called a dermatologist.

Psoriasis is different for everyone, but treatment generally proceeds as follows:

  • If you have mild psoriasis involving a small area of your body, you can try a topical treatment or targeted phototherapy first. If that doesnt work, systemic treatment with an oral medication or biologic is the next step.

  • If you have moderate or severe psoriasis involving a larger area of the body or a sensitive area like the palms or soles a systemic treatment with or without phototherapy is recommended as first-line treatment.

  • Systemic treatment is also needed if you have both psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

Finding the right treatment isnt always easy. Its not easy to predict how someone will respond to treatment, and sometimes you have to try a few medications before you find one that works for you. You may even need more than one medication, too. This process can be frustrating, but your healthcare provider can guide you through the process.

If you have already been diagnosed with psoriasis and need prescription refills, it may help to know that there are several services that can provide a consultation and prescription online.

Dithranol And Coal Tar

Older topical treatments for psoriasis, such as dithranol and coal tar, are only rarely used nowadays. One reason for this is because they arent very easy to use compared with topical corticosteroids or calcipotriol: They can stain your skin and clothing, and many people find the smell of coal tar unpleasant. But dithranol is still often used in hospitals and other inpatient settings.

Silver Sulfadiazine For Facial Psoriasis

Hello,

Ive been suffering from psoriasis for several years now and up until few months ago it was limited mostly to my hands and back. Since the winter started I now also started to develop patches on my face and this is the first time that happened. I cant get the next dermatologist appointment before January, but even then, Im not sure what treatment is there left that might be effective when steroids didnt do much for my hands, anyway. So Im thinking about trying Silver sulfadiazine cream or colloidal silver cream that most people seem to think is not all that helpful for psoriasis. Im hoping for it at least to stop any infection developing on my face, but Im not too sure if its safe for it to be applied on the face or how often should I do it. If anyone has experience with this, help would be much appreciated,

Thanks

Hello, guest:

I am sorry to hear about the psoriasis spreading, especially to your face. There are many treatments that may or may not work for you. If you apply silver sulfadiazine to your face, be sure to just do a small spot at first. That way if you have a negative reaction, you can limit it to a small area first. Have you tried apple cider vinegar and glycerine as a remedy? This may be worth trying as it would be the least harmful to you and hopefully hold you over until your January appointment. Has anybody with this condition have luck with any homeopathic solutions?

What Is Flamazine Cream Used For

Flamazine is an antibacterial cream that’s mainly used to prevent and treat infections of burn wounds.

It’s sometimes used in the short-term management of infected leg ulcers and pressure sores.

It’s also used to help prevent infections in skin grafts, skin with extensive abrasions and finger tip injures.

Medications And Cancerous Cells

I have had PM for 15 years. I see my dermatologist every three months because I have had 10 squamous cells, 5 basal cells and 1 dysplastic nevis surgically removed in the last 10 years. He has also removed many AKs. The dermatologist thinks the reason I have so many cancerous and pre-cancerous cells is because my medications have reduced my bodys natural ability to fight them. Do you agree and if so can you recommend any meds that would be as effective against the PM but not as likely to stimulate skin cancers?

Some immunosuppressive medications do increase the risk of skin cancer, for exampleimuran and some other medications. That said, non-melanoma skin cancers are very common. You could consider having your dermatologist prescribe something called field therapy to try to prevent future skin cancers. If this continues to be a problem, you could consider adjusting your medication regimen for your polymyositis to therapies that are less likely to increase your risk for skin cancer .

Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa

Dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa is a genetic skin disorder that usually presents at birth. It is due to the presence of pathogenic variants of the gene COL7A1 and depending on inheritance pattern is divided into two types: dominant dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa and recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa . In DDEB, blistering is often mild but nonetheless heals with scarring. In the case of RDEB, clinical disorders are severe including skin fragility manifest by blistering with minimal trauma that heals with milia and scarring, even in in the neonatal period and therefore, the lifetime risk of aggressive squamous cell carcinoma is higher than 90% .

Preclinical in vivo Studies

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa is a rare disease and for this reason the number of studies in the last 5 years is limited . In addition, due to their genetic etiology its study requires complex techniques of genetic engineering which long-term effect in humans is yet unknown.

Table 5. Preclinical in vivo and clinical studies of hMSCs used as advanced therapy for recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa in the last 5 years.

On balance, the use of hMSCs for the treatment of RDEB it is a promising strategy, however, due to genetic conditions of the disease, the combination of different advanced therapies seems to be the best option which implies more preclinical studies before translating to the clinical environment.
