Dawn Dish Soap For Scalp Psoriasis

What Is The Worst Soap For Eczema

Washing my hair with dawn dish soap…

Aside from soap with nasty ingredients such as parabens, plastics or fragrances, there are many other types of soap that can exacerbate eczema. Here is a list of the top soaps to avoid:

Bubble baths

What kid doesnt love a bubble bath? Or adult for that matter?! Unfortunately most bubble baths can really cause your eczema to flare up. But why are bubble baths so terrible for dry skin? Well for one, foaming agents use many chemicals that easily irritate skin. Yuck! Another reason is that all soap will dry out the skin and the longer the skin is exposed to soap, as in soaking in a bubble bath, the more the skin will dry out. In fact, for baths, we suggest never using any soap until the very end and then quickly rinsing it off the skin. Never sit in soapy water for an extended period of time.

Although there are some very rare eczema-safe bubble baths out there, its best to err on the side of caution. So, we do NOT recommend bubble baths for children or adults with eczema.

Sanitizers & Foaming Soaps

Although weve been discussing soaps primarily for bath use, there are also many soaps that can exacerbate hand eczema. Again, not the best eczema soap to use. Hand sanitizers are probably one of the worst things you can use! Why? Because there is nothing else as drying as alcohol and that is the primary ingredient in most sanitizers.

The Truth About Soap And Eczema

As you probably already know, soap is known to dry skin out. This is mostly due to harsh chemicals that remove moisture from the skin. These chemicals can also cause severe reactions and irritation, specifically for those suffering from eczema or extremely sensitive skin.

So why is it so hard finding a soap that works with your eczema? Well to be quite honest most skincare products that exist today are loaded with nasty ingredients such as parabens, plastics or one of the worst culprit fragrances. This is NOT the best eczema soap, far from it!

To keep your skin well protected and safe from infection, opting for natural, chemical-free soaps are the best decision. They tend to be gentler and wont dry out the skin like others will.

Yellow Bird Activated Charcoal Soap

Made from processed carbon, this baby can only be described by one word bubbly. Every bar is like a sponge, with millions of small pockets. This is great because having so many pockets gives it a humongous surface area that pulls in unwanted molecules like a magnet.

In many ways, our skin is also like a sponge. Its a permeable membrane that allows toxins and other contaminants free entry like a revolving door. And activated charcoal soap not only pulls out and bacteria from its surface, but toxins from underneath the surface.

Edit: The one I used to used was made by Black Therapy 9, but for some reason its nowhere to be found. So Ive started using an . Its made using organic ingredients and is godly at descaling. My hands always looks smooth for hours afterwards!

What About The Ph Level In Shampoo Vs Dish Soap

If youre really wondering, can you use dish soap to wash your hair, first consider the pH level. When it comes to haircare, the pH level in shampoo can mean the difference between healthy, luscious locks, or dried and frizzy hair.

Its also important to note that the pH of a hair shaft is different from the pH of your scalp. According to an article from PubMed Central , the pH of a hair shaft is 3.67, while the scalps pH is 5.5.

What does this mean?

If you recall, a pH of 7 is neutral. Anything below pH 7 is considered acidic , while anything above 7 is alkaline, or basic . So our hair and scalp are naturally slightly acidic.

The PubMed article studies 123 different shampoos and their corresponding pH levels. The researchers conclude that:

Alkaline pH may increase the negative electrical charge of the hair fiber surface and, therefore, increase friction between the fibers. This may lead to cuticle damage and fiber breakage. It is a reality and not a myth that lower pH of shampoos may cause less frizzing for generating less negative static electricity on the fiber surface.

Youre at the kitchen sink and need to wash your hands after slicing an onion or wiping yet another sneeze off your toddlers face. But the only soap sink side is the same dish soap you use to clean your dishes. Which poses the question: Is it OK to wash your hands with dishwashing liquid? Or, should you only wash your hands with designated body soap either bar or liquid? Heres the answer according to Kally Papantoniou, MD, a New York City and Long Island-based dermatologist.

Just because a soap is advertised to predominantly wash dishes, doesnt mean it cant clean your hands, says Dr. Papantoniou. The good news: Regular washing with a dishwashing liquid should adequately remove the majority of bacteria.

But there are a few buts:

When you do go to buy that hand soap, Dr. Papantoniou recommends steering clear of antibacterial hand soap. Toxic chemicals may be present in those soaps and could pose potential health risks, and second, a balance of bacteria on our skin is actually beneficial and should be promoted. Her choice for those with eczema or dry skin is Vanicream Cleansing Bar or the Cetaphil skin cleansers. For sensitive skin patients, I recommend the use of these milder cleansers to spare skin from being dried out. Here are actual mistakes you may be making when it comes to washing your hands.

What Is The Best Eczema Soap

We already mentioned there are many soaps that must be avoided for eczema, but fortunately there are many great, natural alternatives available.

If youre suffering from dry, itchy or irritated eczema, its always best to opt for a product that contains either olive oil or a fatty base like shea to nurture your skin and not strip it of moisture like commercial brands will. We dont find coconut oil only bases to be rich and moisturizing enough, so in general we dont recommend those, although they are natural.

This Emily Skin Soothers Soap for Eczema contains natural Chinese herbs, as well as olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter and many more natural and eczema safe ingredients. Not only is it perfect as a bathing soap for eczema, but it can also be doubled up for showering. It is both nourishing and extremely moisturizing for the driest skin. Weve heard it works great for shampoo too if you have shorter hair.

Alternatively, if youre looking for a bottled soap, the above product is also available in liquid form, arguably even better as a shampoo. Check out this natural liqued soap for eczema, which we love and are happy to share in this best eczema soap recap.

Although soap for eczema might be difficult to find, its not impossible. As discussed, there are a variety of different natural, eczema-safe alternatives that can be provide soothing and nourishing relief.

How Often To Wash Your Hair

Keeping your hair thick, healthy, and shiny is not just about finding the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. Its also about when and how you wash your hair. How often you wash will depend on the type of hair. But you should never need to wash your hair on a daily basis.8 Usually, every three days or so should suffice.

When you’ve finished washing and conditioning, dont be too hasty to reach for the towel. Wrapping wet hair in a towel or turban can cause your hair to break or pull out at the roots. Its okay to pat your hair dry with a towel, then let it air dry naturally. If you really must use a hair dryer, keep it on a cool setting, and dont over-dry your hair.

Regardless of what shampoo you use and how you use it, conditioning after you shampoo is important because while shampoos cleanse dirt and residue from the hair, they also remove oils. A quality conditioner can restore the hairs natural balance of oils. Remember, if you are using a 2-in-1 conditioner, typically the conditioning agent will be silicone rather than an oil. For this reason, its better to use a separate conditioner after a 2-in-1. The most effective conditioners contain carrier oils such as argan, avocado, coconut, or jojoba oil which restore the hairs natural moisture.

How To Use The Blue Dawn As Shampoo

There are two ways to use the Blue Dawn dishwashing liquid on your locs: On your entire head or concentrated in one area.

Using the Blue Dawn Dishwashing Liquid all over on your head will be the most effective way to deep cleanse all of your hair. I recommend doing at least 2 shampoos with the Blue Dawn Dishwashing Liquid then following up with a moisturizing shampoo and a steam treatment.

If you have a few particular locs that have excessive build up stuck in them, you can add the Blue Dawn Dishwashing Liquid to a spray bottle and focus in on those locs individually.

With either method, be sure to rinse thoroughly, at least 5 minutes, with warm water and then follow up with a moisturizing shampoo. Personally, I do not use conditioner in locs, instead follow up the Blue Dawn Dishwashing Liquid cleansing with a hot oil treatment or steam treatment to replenish the natural oils that are removed during the process and an herbal rinse to strengthen the hair.

What Causes This Greasy Waxy Hair

According to Dr. Peter Lio, board certified dermatologist and the founder of the amazing Chicago Integrative Eczema Center, its very likely a form of seborrheic dermatitis, a type of eczema of the scalp.

Seborrhoeic eczema is a common, chronic or relapsing form of eczema/dermatitis that mainly affects the scalp and face. There are infantile and adult forms of seborrhoeic eczema. It is sometimes associated with psoriasis .

According to Dr. Lio, the first part is increased oil production, then the malassezia yeast overgrows, then the immune system gets mad, then you get scales and redness. Dandruff is an uninflamed form of seborrheic dermatitis. Dandruff presents as bran-like scaly patches scattered within hair-bearing areas of the scalp. I found this very interesting because I traditionally associate dandruff with seborrheic dermatitis, but not the waxy, greasy scalp.Dr. Lios theory is that this waxy, non-scaly residue in my hair was probably seborrheic dermatitis that didnt get a chance to fully develop for some reason. It could be because my diet is so clean that I didnt develop full-blown scales and redness, but when I was younger I was NOT eating healthy at all. Hello, Hamburger Helper and Lean Cuisines! Yikes. Thankfully those days are the past.

Brilliant Uses For Dawn Dish Soap

Good news: The Dawn dish soap sitting by your sink can be used for more than just dishes. In fact, you will probably be shocked by just how useful that iconic blue liquid really is. The dish-washing soap contains strong detergent that removes grease, but the mixture is still gentle because of the added surfactants that protect your skin from getting irritated. These ingredients have made Dawn incredibly useful outside of the sink, which is probably why it’s the bestselling dish-washing soap in the country. We have rounded up 31 ways that you can take Dawn to a whole new level and utilize it in almost any situation.

  • Make an ice pack: Fill a plastic sandwich bag half-full with soap, close it, and freeze it. The soap stays cold for a long time, and the ice pack can be reused.
  • Improve your manicure: Soak your hands in warm water and Dawn to soften your cuticles and take natural oils off of your nails so that the polish will really stick.
  • Unclog toilets: Pour a cup of Dawn in the toilet, let it sit for 10 minutes, then pour a bucket of hot water into the bowl and flush.

Pros & Cons Of Blue Dawn Dishwashing Liquid On Locs

    Cons: The Bad News

There were really only two things that made using the Blue Dawn dishwashing liquid a bad thing.

Removes Natural Oils. This is a result of the heavy-duty surfactants doing their job too well. The formula is designed to remove all the dirt, oil, and grime that it comes in contact with and as a result you MUST follow this product with a moisturizing shampoo AND a hot oil treatment or steam treatment.

Ingredients arent natural. Using plant-based all natural ingredients on your locs is one of the best things you can do, but if you havent always been a hair vegan then you may need to use a product, such as the Dawn Dish Soap, with some unnatural ingredients to remove the buildup trapped in your hair.

    Pros: The Good News

Removes Build Up. Whether you have odors, dirt or product build up the Blue Dawn Dishwashing Liquid really gets deep down within the locs.

Refreshes Locs. The Blue Dawn dishwashing liquid works so well and it purifies the locs from the inside out which leaves them very lightweight and cleansed.

Thinking about giving the Blue Dawn dishwashing liquid shampoo a try on your locs? Let me give you some tips of advice.

The 6 Best Soaps For Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition caused by the excess buildup of skin. Understood to be the result of an overactive immune system, the buildup can result in red, flaky, and painful patches. Because it is chronic, the goal for psoriasis sufferers should be to manage symptoms and avoid and treat flare-ups, not to eliminate them completely. While it’s smart to have prescriptions as the primary treatment, many parts of your daily routine, including showers, make an impact. The best soaps for psoriasis can help soothe and even treat symptoms, but you have to know what ingredients to look for, and what to avoid.

âIn general, a gentle soap for washing is fine for most people with psoriasis,â explains John Zampella, M.D., assistant professor of dermatology at NYU Langone Health. âThe mainstay of treatments will likely come from your dermatologist in the form of a topical steroid or perhaps even an injectable biologic medicine.â

Some soaps, however, can help treat symptoms. The three ingredients Zampella recommends looking for are salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and urea. They act to help descale, or lift away, excess skin. Acne-fighter salicylic acid is the most common in soaps, and urea is most often found in moisturizers. However, you can also find a combination.
