Sneaky Psoriasis Sign #: A Raindrop Rash
This is called Guttate psoriasis. People tend to have sudden eruption of small, scaly, salmon-colored bumps on the torso, legs, and arms, says Dr. Kassardjian. Theyre shaped like raindrops.
In children and young adults, Guttate psoriasis often appears as a reaction to an infection like strep throat or chickenpox. When the infection clears, so does the psoriasis. However, Guttate psoriasis can become chronic as well.
Whats The Connection Between Tonsils And Psoriasis
Strep throat has been linked with the onset of psoriasis. So, it makes sense that a tonsillectomy would reduce the number of throat infections and decrease psoriatic triggers. A 2014 review published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatologylooked at studies published between 1960 and 2013. The researchers chose 20 articles involving 410 people with psoriasis whod had tonsillectomies. Of those, 290 showed improvement of their psoriasis after having the procedure. Some went on to relapse.
Most of the studies used in the review were case reports, retrospective studies, and observational studies. Only one was a randomized controlled trial. That small study included 29 people with psoriasis, and only 15 had had tonsillectomies. Of those, 13 had a 30 to 90 percent improvement in psoriasis symptoms.
A lot more research is needed before doctors can determine who might benefit from this approach, and if it will helpful in the long term. Theres not enough data to make the case at this time.
How Is Guttate Psoriasis Treated
Guttate psoriasis may go away on its own in a few weeks or months. If it doesnt, it can be treated with topical medications, says UFHealth, though applying creams and ointments to the hundreds of tiny drops on your skin can be tedious. Ive done numerous steroid creams over the years, Shurlow says. Dandruff shampoos and moisturizers may help, too, UFHealth says.
is often an effective treatment for guttate psoriasis. Light therapy helped me a lot at first, says Shurlow. But phototherapy can make your skin sensitive to light, UFHealth notes.
If you have a severe case, your doctor might prescribe oral or injectable medications to dampen your inflammatory response. Shurlow has been on a biologic for about 14 years, and it has really helped clear her skin. I feel very fortunate that insurance has covered most of the cost, she says. I still have a copay, but its reasonable. And really, my skin has been much better since Ive been on the biologic.
Antistreptococcal treatment like penicillin or amoxicillin is sometimes used to treat the acute form of guttate psoriasis, especially in children and young adults, but when researchers in Brussels, Belgium, reviewed the literature, they found no evidence of its efficacy or safety. They published their findings in March 2019 in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews.
More trials are needed to assess this guttate psoriasis treatment, they concluded.

Treating A Child Requires Special Considerations
Before treating a child, a dermatologist carefully considers:
Whether treatment is necessary
The risks and benefits of potential treatments
Having a visible skin disease can be very stressful. Psoriasis on the scalp can be especially troubling for a child or teenager, especially if it causes hair loss. A child can feel embarrassed and start to withdraw from others. Constant itch and pain can make it difficult to concentrate during school and to sleep at night. Some children, however, are not bothered by their psoriasis, especially if it is covered by clothing and causes little itch or pain. In that case, treatment may be unnecessary. Before treating a child, a dermatologist also looks at the short- and long-term effects of treating psoriasis. When treating a child, its important to anticipate what treatment may be required in the future. If treatment is needed now, a dermatologist can develop a treatment plan that minimizes side effects and maximizes the beneficial effects of treatment.

Can There Be Complications From Guttate Psoriasis
As with any type of psoriasis, guttate psoriasis may lead to complications.
Some people can have one episode of guttate psoriasis when they are 12 years old and never have it again, Sugarman says. Others wind up with chronic psoriasis and some lipid abnormalities: high blood cholesterol and triglycerides.
Guttate psoriasis can cause severe itching and, less frequently, serious skin infections, Sugarman says.
Work closely with your doctor to find the best treatment and make this condition easier to manage.
What Medications Are Used In The Treatment Of Guttate Psoriasis
Doctors may use antibiotics when the guttate psoriasis is related to a streptococcal infection. They may choose an antibiotic that will act on a wide range of bacteria. People should always tell their doctor what drugs they are currently taking because of the possibility of drug reactions.
Be aware of possible allergic reactions to any antibiotic used, especially penicillin. Stop taking the drug if an allergic reaction is suspected. Occasionally, chronic guttate psoriasis resistant to light therapy and antibiotics may require treatment with systemic medications used to treat classical plaque-type psoriasis.

Which Type Of Doctors Treat Guttate Psoriasis
People should see a doctor or health care professional if they develop a sudden eruption of small red drop-like lesions of guttate psoriasis. Dermatologists, doctors who specialize in the treatment of skin disease, are best equipped to diagnose and treat guttate psoriasis. This form of psoriasis is usually a mild inconvenience to most people. Most of the time, the lesions last several weeks to a few months. Other times, the guttate eruption can develop into chronic plaque psoriasis. Scarring is not a problem.
The doctor can prescribe treatments that help relieve the itching. This type of psoriasis usually “runs its course” and goes away without medical treatment in a few weeks.
How Is The Diagnosis Of Oral Psoriasis Made
The diagnosis of oral psoriasis is usually made from the clinical appearance, in a patient who has known psoriasis. A biopsy can help to confirm the diagnosis.
Under the microscope, psoriasis is characterised by thickened epithelium with long rete ridges and chronic inflammation. Small collections of lymphocytes form microabscesses within the epithelium along with migrating polymorphonuclearleukocytes.

What Happens During A Strep A Test
A rapid test and a throat culture are done in the same way. During the procedure:
- You will be asked to tilt your head back and open your mouth as wide as possible.
- Your health care provider will use a tongue depressor to hold down your tongue.
- He or she will use a special swab to take a sample from the back of your throat and tonsils.
- The sample may be used to do a rapid strep test in the provider’s office. Sometimes the sample is sent to a lab.
- Your provider may take a second sample and send it to a lab for a throat culture if necessary.
How Can Parents Help
For some children, psoriasis is just a minor inconvenience. For others, it is a difficult medical condition.
To manage symptoms and make outbreaks less likely, your child should:
- Wash hands well and often and stay away from people who are sick to prevent infections.
- Manage stress through exercise, yoga, or meditation.
- Not smoke or drink alcohol.
- Keep a healthy weight. People who are overweight tend to have more severe psoriasis symptoms.
Kids and teens with psoriasis may feel uncomfortable with the way their skin looks. Help your child understand that psoriasis is common and treatments can help.
Whether your child’s psoriasis is mild or severe, learn about the condition together. Offer to help find a therapist or join a support group if that might help. Talk to your doctor or check websites like:
