Why Is My Skin Always So Dry

Robert A. Norman, DO, MPH Jessica Fides Aun

A 71-year-old man presented to the office because of dry skin. He said that since he was a child, he always had flaky, dry skin that covered almost his entire body. Although he had been prescribed many types of lotions and ointments during his lifetime, none relieved nor worsened his dry skin. The patient reported no redness or pruritus. To his knowledge, there was no family history of anyone having the same symptoms. The man had a 59-pack-year history of smoking and his medical history included basal cell carcinoma, hypertension, and peripheral arterial disease, for which he had undergone peripheral arterial bypass surgery. Upon physical examination, he had dry, flesh-colored, polygonal scales covering his entire body, particularly on his arms and legs . At the time, he was using prescribed desonide topical lotion, mupirocin topical ointment, and urea topical cream. He was also taking clopidogrel to prevent blood clots.

What Are The Benefits Of Ammonium Lactate

Atopic dermatitis (Eczema)

Ammonium lactate is mainly used to improve the moisture and hydration of the skin. It can also be used as a buffering agent in the product as well as a pH adjuster.

Hydration Hydration and moisture restoration is the main benefit of using an ammonium lactate product. It may seem counterintuitive to use an acid to help improve moisture as overusing acids can break down the skins natural barrier and have been linked to moisture loss. However, what is thought to occur is that ammonium lactate, when applied to the skin, acts as a humectant or water preserving ingredient. While the mechanisms of action arent fully understood, ammonium lactate is often used for this benefit.

Exfoliation Ammonium lactate, like most AHAs, also exfoliates the skin, helping to remove dead skin cells and flakiness. Removing the dead skin that often builds upon the surface of the skin may also help to improve the hydration and moisture levels of the skin. This is because dry, flaky skin has trouble retaining and holding onto moisture.

Ammonium Lactatecontaining Moisturizers: A Systematic Review

Laura Hunt, PharmD

Worcester, Massachusetts

US Pharm. 2014 39:46-49.

ABSTRACT: Patients with diabetes often suffer from foot complications, including ulcers, infections, and even amputations. These complications may begin as xerosis . Patients are often prescribed a moisturizer to help maintain the physical-chemical barrier of the skin and to reduce complications related to xerosis. Ammonium lactatecontaining moisturizers are commonly prescribed, but evidence supporting their use over other moisturizers is lacking. This suggests that any of the products evaluated in this review may be effective for reducing xerosis. Pharmacists in the community can utilize this information to make individualized and evidence-based recommendations according to cost, ease of administration, and adverse effects.

Patients with diabetes often experience foot complications, such as ulcers, infections, and even amputations.1 More than half of all lower-extremity amputations in the United States are caused by diabetes or diabetes-related complications.2 These complications may begin as xerosis, which is described as reddened, dehydrated skin with scaling that resembles cracked porcelain.3 Many patients are prescribed a moisturizer to help maintain the physical-chemical barrier of the skin, which is expected to reduce complications related to foot xerosis.4
